Changing Money

Fri Apr 20, 2007 5:16 pm

It seems that exchaning currency varies greatly depending on where you arrive/depart. I've had fairly good exchange rates in Scandinavia, Japan and in other parts of Asia. But Australia is NOT a place to change money at the airport. You'd better do that downtown for a much better rate.

Where is a good place, from your travels, to exchange travellers' checks/cash? Alternatively, where should we not exchange our currency?

Thanks!

Better to avoid airports, usually more expensive to exchange there. Personally I use credit card as much as possible, also get my cash from ATM using my MC/Visa. It's the easy way, not necessarily cheapest though.
And in Europe I avoid non-Eurocurrency countries, to avoid exhange problems  Big grin

Take your VISA and use an ATM. You will find them everywhere (except in the case of Cuba where there is 1 ATM in the country  Wink)

I also avoid the airport and tend to use ATMs. If there is a branch of your bank at your home airport you might be able to change money and get a better rate or reduced charges (for instance in my case Credit Suisse at ZRH waive the CHF5 charge as I bank with them)

Like the above posters say, airports are by far the WORST places to change money. They have you by the short and curlies. The best way to avoid charges is to use your Visa card.

Nothing beats landing in some remote location only to find a Citibank.  Big grin
