Detroit snubbed in top city list
It's overlooked in ranking of best places for blacks

Detroit has the largest percentage of blacks of any major city in the country -- 82% -- it's home to Motown and is about to play host to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's national convention this summer.

Even so, the Motor City doesn't make the Top 10 Best Places for African Americans to live -- for the second consecutive time -- according to a survey released this week by Black Enterprise magazine.

Interesting. However, if I would move back to the States, being (half) Afro-american. I would never consider this ranking. It shouldn't be an issue anyhow for the colour of someones skin to decide where to live.

Unfortunately the US is a country still developing from segregation. Therefor I would find it more interesting in what cities (or states) black and white live most in harmony. Although many things have changed positively, since the late sixties.

Too bad things are changing in the opposite direction in many European countries.

Being so called "mixed" makes these things hard to understand, I suppose.

Just because it has the largest percentage of African Americans, doesn't make it the "best" place to live.

Detroit (the city) isn't a very nice place for anybody, including Blacks. Then you also have the decline in the automotive and other industries employment and related decline in property values in the region that is also a turn off.

Well, considering the high unemployment rate, high crime rate, and probably one of the highest rate fatherless families, it comes as little surprise. This city is run by a bunch of corrupt gangsters, overspending to the degree that high numbers of police have been let go due to cost cuts, the metro transit system(which many urban residents depend on to get around) has been hit with multiple rounds of cuts. I mean the mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick is nothing but a hustler in nice clothes. This guy has run this city straight into the ground and practially bankrupted it. When he running for the mayorship here in 2000, he was running on a economic recovery platform. 4 years later, he's running on the same platform. The city's spending out of control, cuts here, cuts there. The city has gone nowhere but down. Kwame Kilpatrick said he was going to clean up the city and yet it's gotten worse since he's been in office, but they re-elected the guy. Parts of the downtown area looks nice in certain areas, but you don't have to look very far to see the lines of dilapitated buildings and vacant lots that line the city streets, where drug dealers and prostitutes are practically running their business in broad daylight. I never go into downtown Detroit anymore, not if I can help it. The nicest thing about Detroit is DTW. The people that drive this community is the immigrant population. From what I see, they are the hardest working people here. They own/operate alot of the businesses here and they do a good job of it. But the issue still remains that the city of Detroit won't improve unless they start electing some people who can run the city. Any prolonged period of time I have to spend here is too long, to the point that I can't wait to get home to Seattle. The rest of Michigan isn't doing so bad, but it's largest city is just in a freefall.
