We (insert Group Here) Are Offended By...

Tue Apr 24, 2007 11:30 pm

Todays group offended by members of the media is:

Quote:
It's time for a national dialogue on the "w-word." I'll give you a hint: It's an offensive term that is meant to imply that all Mexican-Americans arrived in the United States by swimming across a river -- something that comes across as doubly offensive to immigrants who came to the country legally or those whose families have been here for generations.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/24/navarrette/index.html

Wait... what?

I'm sorry, did the people who came to my nation illegally, stayed here illegally and sucked like leaches off my tax supported healthcare and education systems claim that they were offended by something someone called them?

I'm sorry, you don't get to play this game.

This game is for the people who play by the rules.

Not yours.

Let's talk offensive...

"w-word."

I used to park next to a Mercedes at my office in B.H. with that word for its license plate. I always wondered how that got by the DMV censors, but I thought it was grand someone would actually do that and fling their nose, if not their Mercedes, at society.

Is this guy for real? In the very article he denounces repeating the "w-word", he repeats it three times!

This Ruben Navarrette guy is such an idiot.
He states; "Bill O'Reilly once referred to Mexicans as wetbacks."

Then states; Here's a tip for liberals...

O'Reilly isn't a liberal and Frank Rich was simply pointing out one of the many foolish remarks by O'Reilly.

Wet-Back is racially insensitive?

Well shit, have them all get together and sign a petition with their A) legal residence and B) voter's registration number, then we'll talk about it. If they don't have B), give their A) to DHS-Immigration.

Um, no, it's the ones who (quoting from your link):

Because it seems to me THEY are the ones complaining.

To demonstrate where the true offense should be with regards to illegal aliens and groups promoting their "rights".

It's almost identical to ones that littered Dallas after the illegal alien orgy here last year.

I have no doubts about it's authenticity.

Why would legal immigrants complain about the term "wetback"? The term refers to an act, specifically of being an illegal immigrant. It has nothing to do with legal immigrants. The term refers to illegal immigrants, not to Hispanics.

While it has ethnic connotations, obviously, I've always taken it as akin to calling me a "sodomite" rather than the six-letter f-word. It just doesn't have the same impact--even though I could really care less what you call me beyond late for dinner.

I'd bet money that there are plenty of people out there who would call Latinos "wetbacks" without checking first if they were legal or not. It's the same thing as if someone were to refer to Catholic priests in general as pedophiles (and there are some people who have done so). The priests would take it as an insult, even though for a few amongst them the label may be accurate.

The term 'wetback' is considered offensive to legal and illegal citizens. I also find the term very offensive and derogatory and I don't even have a drop of Chicano blood.

Instead I should treat people who don't respect my laws and national soverignty with dignity and respect? I don't think so. There are two views on respect. One that is all people should be given respect until the do something to lose it. The other is that people should earn your respect. This particular group has failed both approaches.

Honest question, would you be offended if someone--whose respect you haven't earned yet, and who knows nothing about you at all other than you're heterosexual--refers to you with the seven-letter "b-word"? I'm not attempting to change the subject, just see where you sit when it comes to yourself.

We on A.net are offended by conservative whinos who bitch and moan about how they're being discriminated against by all those nasty, evil minorities, gays, women, etc etc etc etc etc, who just won't allow them to use the N-word, the F-word, the h-word.

Oh Lord, have mercy upon those poor, battered, discriminated overweight Limbaugh worshippers who cannot insult in peace. May you rescue them from the hell they have to endure as they are beaten and lashed and flayed just to exercise their right to spew hatred in your name.

Wait....

Do you mean "breeder"?

Lol, go ahead. No offense taken, it's a biological truth. Anyone can call me that.

Westy, I only get offended when people who know better, and I care about their opinion, say things that are false. If people who don't know a thing about me, or I don't care if they DIAF, want to run their mouth off and look stupid, that's their problem. See Jaysits post for referance. Could care less, but it would take effort.

The rules are different for racial slurs though. Those don't ever fly.

To feel better about himself. The same thing was evident in a thread where he felt the need to attack and insult Dr. Phil (and me) instead of simply explaining why he felt differently. If all they can do is resort to insults, they have far larger problems than whoever is the cause of their pain. Why anyone would want to use these words in the first place is beyond me. What would any rational person gain from using these words? Nothing. If a confident person had a problem with something like immigration, they would discuss the issue and try to come up with solution - NOT sit on a computer and call people names.

But for those with low self-esteem, I guess causing others pain by using these words is worth it for a few minutes of feeling that 'power' - even to the point where they will look for an excuse to use these insults, e.g.

Really? Guess you haven't been reading up on Aztlan, La Raza, and MEChA.

Quote:
In the spirit of a new people that is conscious not only of its proud historical heritage but also of the brutal "gringo" invasion of our territories, we, the Chicano inhabitants and civilizers of the northern land of Aztlán from whence came our forefathers, reclaiming the land of their birth and consecrating the determination of our people of the sun, declare that the call of our blood is our power, our responsibility, and our inevitable destiny.

We are free and sovereign to determine those tasks which are justly called for by our house, our land, the sweat of our brows, and by our hearts. Aztlán belongs to those who plant the seeds, water the fields, and gather the crops and not to the foreign Europeans. We do not recognize capricious frontiers on the bronze continent.

I didn't read the above replies. Sorry.

Latins (even from Spain) will always get that stamp from the ignorant, just like the ignorant use the N word. If they want to be bothered by the ignorant, that is their cross to bear.

It's VERY simple. If you don't like what people say: Choose to ignore it; choose to buy/watch/read something else; or choose to buy products of the sponsors of the people who support you.

To be honest, I don't really understand the point of all these "don't say the X word" mores -- because if people have prejudice in their heart and mind, what they say (or don't say) really doesn't matter anyway.

What's that saying...it's the devil you know vs. the devil you don't know....?

The issue is this:

What if you were put in a room with three people of Mexican ancestry, one who is a 10th generation American national, another who is say, the Mexican Minister of Petroleum, and another who just squirmed over the border last week, and if these three people were similarly dressed, had similar ethnic and facial features and were told not to speak to you lest their ability (or inability) to speak English gave them away.

Well, who's the "wetback?"

Could you tell?

I would wager a big fat "No."

And still when many Americans see someone of Mexican ancestry, they see a "wetback."

So, that term is offensive to most, if not all, Americans of Mexican ancestry and Mexicans, whether they're here in the US, or in Mexico, or whether they're here illegally or legally. Jeez, I'm not Mexican and I find it offensive.

You may not be offended by it because its not directed against you, but there are millions who are deeply offended by it.

What about that do you not get?

Use the term "illegals" if you are so obsessed with the issue. It means the same thing, and you can get your point across without having to resort to words that clearly offend.

It's also safer for you. Try exercising your right to offend by using the term "wetback" in public, rather than from behind a computer screen, and you may end up with a few broken bones. Or at least a black eye. That's not very nice, don't you think?

If your hypothetical Mexican Minister of petroleum accurately represented a senior Mexican government official, he or she would likely look more anglo saxon than many native Americans.

If the government of Mexico didn't actively participate in the violation of US immigration laws by Mexican citizens, perhaps the term wouldn't be so widely accepted.
