F1 Catalunya, Round 4!

Thu Apr 26, 2007 3:58 pm

Gents,

17 days until we are back in business, and now I think the real season will begin.
Spa, Belgium, is to me the most exciting race of the season with some cool high speed corners.

Will Spyker's B version get them back on track? Not so sure really, but they managed to complete the Bahrain race, so in a way that's a major step.

Renault,
Well, what to say, and what to predict? They have for sure a lot of work to do to be able to defend their titles.

Mclaren,
They sure are strong candidates for the title this year with 2 very strong drivers.
Any updates for Spain?

Ferrari,
They will have some new airo parts for Spain, so lets see what this will bring them. Kimi was for sure not happy with his 3rd in last race, and he thinks that the updates for Europe will bring them right up to the front again.
Also strong candidate for the title with 2 great drivers, although my bet goes to Kimi ahead of Massa.

Red Bull,
Showed some very strong performance in Bahrain, and managed to overtake and leave Renault behind them.
Great drive from D.C (as long as it lasted).

So what are your thoughts, opinions?

I do believe there is a 'major' update planned to the car. Rumors suggest that Fernandos car has had to be stripped and completely rebuilt after Bahrain as apparently a lighting gantry fell on the car. Could this be the reason behind his lack luster performance?

They may have to look at their infrastructure, didn't this happen just prior to the start of a GP in Melbourne a few years ago?

Erm the fact that Massa won that race comfortably suggests that Ferrari always were at the front - just not Raikkonen on that occasion.

Well some of the other news was Heidfeld supposedly talking to Toyota - five minutes later BMW who "would not be sorting out contracts until late rin the season" are supposedly offering him a new deal.

The other news is Bourdais testing for Torro Rosso again in the summer and may well be moving towards a seat next season. Remeber the key thing here is that Nicholas Todt is his manager (son of Jean Todt) and Torro Rosso use Ferrari engines of course. such connections did Massa no harm......

Toyota came out the other day and said Heidfeld was a midfield runner. That to me seems to quach rumors that he'll goto Toyota. I think BMW will keep him.

Bah, Bourdais is the worst driver I've ever seen. Hopefully Toro Rosso are just using him to shake things up so that Speed and Luizzi produce better results.

Spyker,

As part of discussions for a new sponsorship, Spyker might get Paris Hilton to show up now and then. The deal is not settled yet, but I guess if you can not make on the track, you have to try to set the pace off the track. Not that Paris is all that, but she sure has more to offer then Spyker has on the track.

Bump bump. When the hell is this grandprix??? 7 days??? That's ages away. I wish they would keep the usual 2 weeks between grandprix's instead of changing it between 1, 2 and 3 weeks. I predict the top three positions to be Barrichello, Coulthard and Wurz.

Only messing. I think Hamilton is getting close to a race victory, especially if his luck carries on!

I think the reason they have the 4 week break is that they left the slot for the San Marino GP (which would have been this weekend), but it ended up getting canceled, and they didn't reschedule the other races.

Hey all,

as much as I want Ferrari to win, Hamilton is really good driver. I wonder if Hamilton and Alonso will have some kind disagreement. Hamilton really surprised me, I was expecting Alonso to win all races so far. I will not be surprised if he wins.

I am still not sure whom I like better, Massa or Kimi. Both of them seem good as well. I need to see more from them this season to make my decision.

I feel sorry for Scott Speed. He just does not have much luck. And I am pleasantly surprised by Kubica. I expect him to finish in top 10 if not top 5.

It does however offer the teams to do some serious updates, which some teams really needs as well.
But ok, a bit to long with 3 weeks in between. So that is why we are having these threads to pass time. LOL!

Frustrating for us, but for the teams its a welcomed break.

Most of the team had been away from home since the week of the Australian GP all the way to the end of the Bahrain GP. I think the gap is to give them a little bit of a rest, time to see their family's and such, as soon as they are back in Europe they will be on the road again.

What must Button be thinking now as he see's Sato flying past in a Super Aguri. He must be well and truely gutted. Poor guy. I see Davidson and Sato remaining at the team and steering Super Aguri up the ranks within the next few years. I would consider both good drivers, although Sato can have his crazy moments sometimes.

I was wondering the other day - for no apparent reason, why Luciano Burti ever disappeared from the F1 scene.

After his two nasty crashes at the German & Belgian GP in 2001 he had to sit out the rest of the season, he then tested for Ferrari for a few years (if I remember rightly).

I just find it surprising he disappeared, he wasn't that bad a driver - it just seems his two horrific crashes killed his F1 career.

It is weird sometimes how you start thinking about these things!

There have been worse drivers indeed, but Burti did nothing of any note while he was in F1 to show that he had a long term future i'm afraid. Admittedly a Jaguar or Prost was not going to be the best vehicle to impress in, but he failed to make the most of his opportunity like so many others before and after him.

He's racing touring cars back in Brazil now I believe.....

After Lauda's crash in 76 it was never used again for F1. The new Nurburgring appeared in 1984 with part of covering the initial stadium section of the old track. Problem with the old track is it is is just too long among other things to make it adequately safe for top line racing. Part of the problem with Lauda's accident was the speed it took the marshalls to get there - in fct it was only other F1 drivers that got him out the car and saved his life.

These days it's main race is the Nurburgring 24hrs which tends to see various GT cars race round it, but not as part of any championship.

I can understand that safety concerns will never lead to a F1 grand prix being hosted on it again - but if it could be made safe - and a race run on it, it would surely be amazing. A circuit with true character, and so much more exciting than half of the current circuits we have.

I wonder how much modifying would be required to bring it up to current safety standards?

Does anyone know how long it would take for an F1 car to lap the Noedschleife ring?...

IIRC its 13 miles long right?...must be at least a good 4 or 5 minute lap.

I think Jeremy Clarkson did it ni a Jag Diesel in about 9 minutes.

Does anyone know how the New Wing is working out for Mclaren?

Heidfeld was instructed not to take any risks and to slow for photo calls on each of his three laps, so his best lap of 8m34s – more than two minutes shy of the outright track record – was not indicative of what a modern F1 car might be capable of.

I can't believe thats 9 years ago - it doesn't seem it!
I can still clearly remember Murray Walker getting all excited over it!

Watching that again, just how much has F1 safety come on over the last nine years. While we haven't had a situation like that since, I am not so sure we would have all the wheels flying around like that. It's a miracle someone wasn't seriously hurt or killed.

If thats the case then there will most likely be another 4 week gap where one of the German grandprix's is missing.

I don't think they ever scheduled a separate German GP... they're aren't any other abnormal breaks in the schedule.

They left the spot open for San Marino because they were trying to work out a deal pending facility improvements, which never happened.

I don't think the San Marino GP is fully dead for the future, but it's obviously not on the schedule this year. But with expansion to Mexico, UAE, and potential others, I would doubt it.

I thought they had made afew comprises, alternating the Monza and Imola grandprix each year, and the same for the two german races (Hock and Nurburgring).

They talked about it, but AFAIK nothing official. The German GP is definitely going to alternate between the Nurburgring and Hermann-Tilkedrome at Hockenheim....

However there is no German GP this season. The race at the Nurburgring will still be called the European Grand Prix.

They did implode the pit building. That, technically, counts as an improvement  wink

The problem for Super Aguri is... they don't have much experience developing a chassis of their own. They wrung some decent speed out of the old Arrows chassis last year, and have managed even better performances this year with the old Honda, but what about next year when they are stuck with this year's atrocious disaster of a Honda? No matter how well they've reworked last year's car, that was always a capable machine, this current Honda is a catastrophe and I think SA will pay the price next season.

Does anyone know how long it would take for an F1 car to lap the Noedschleife ring?...

IIRC its 13 miles long right?...must be at least a good 4 or 5 minute lap.

I think Jeremy Clarkson did it ni a Jag Diesel in about 9 minutes.

The track record for the 'ring is 6:11 by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 Group C prototype during the last ever big time international championship race at the full ring in '83. Utterly amazing lap, he was on pole by 5 seconds. That's the year Derek Bell filmed "In Car 956", which includes a famously quick lap of the circuit, look for it on youtube. Those Porsches were quick cars, but I'd imagine a current generation F1 car could easily lap a minute faster if not more. I think the road car lap record is 6:55 set by one of those little Radicals.

The old F1 record was set by Lauda in qualifying before his accident in the race in '76 at 6:58, which was actually on a track 2,000 meters longer than the one Bellof raced on in '83, so the times can't really be compared.

I found the Spyker F1 vs F-16.
It's all in dutch, but they are just smalltalking. However, the reporter asks Albers if he is going to make it to the end this time. Big grin "Of course I will", Albers says.
