Liberal Or Conservative?

Fri Apr 27, 2007 8:14 pm

This should be a fun Friday thread, with a simple question - are you liberal or conservative and why?

As for myself, I'm definitely liberal, primarily because of the homosexuality issue. I'm strongly for abortion as well. And lastly, I've been a bit fed up with the conservatives roaming the white house for the last (almost) 8 years.

So what about you?

Both.

I'm liberal on most social issues, conservative on fiscal and national defense.

Conservative.

Conservative on defense.

Conservative fiscally.

Conservative on gay marriage, but support unions.

Conservative on firearm rights.

Conservative on abortion, find it wretched and should be used only when a danger to the mother.

Etc, etc, but most people om here already seem to be curiously aware.

I call myself independent, as I try to select the best out of everything (an opportunist).

If I have to use a conventional scale or take an average: very, very liberal! Especially the tolerance issue and the progressive human thinking.. in some issues, some cons are forward (some economic issues etc.), but I prefer the soft-spoken way and approach to things  Wink

Sounds a lot like me. I used to be a Reagan Republican. That gradually changed over the years. I didn't like seeing big business getting more and small business getting the shaft. Likewise, I didn't like seeing the "haves" starting to benefit more than the "have nots" under Republican administrations.

I am a left-swinging moderate. I am mostly liberal, as I believe in social and economic equality and rights for every person, with a few exceptions, such as abortion (I believe in the rights of the unborn person, not the woman having it done).

I am also known by people to be very compromising and "in the middle." If I had it my way, I'd partially satisfy both sides, if possible, to almost every debate...rather than "polarize" to one side.

shit. I'm a Sandinista.

why?

1. i'm humored by those who make $6 an hour that describe themselves as "fiscally conservative" and want to spend hundreds of billions of dollars blowing up desert rocks.

2. i would totally plug Joy Behar for calling Star Jones a bitch.

3. better extended line of credit at fashionable stores.

4. i don't particularly care for Bush. manscaping is important.

5. if i get too drunk and sleep with an ugly fat chick, i get to right to not have her mother my children

6. i think everyone should get laid 3 times a day. with different people.

7. i think the world needs more 24/7 dance clubs with lots of neon lighting and drink specials.

8. alcohol sales should NEVER be limited or banned or restricted and there should always be a happy hour availability someplace.

9. Je$u$ should be used for promoting baked goods, bazaars, and canned food drives, and not used for deciding my education or building my roads

Social Liberal
Fiscal Conservative

I have favored voting for liberals because my social agenda is more important then fiscal discipline. Now that a "Conservative" has blown the doors off of fiscal conservatisim, and Democrats are acting just as stupid as them I don't know what I'm going to do in 08. I'll probably write myself in.

I'm socially Libertarian, Politically conservative.

In other words I'm not against abortion per se. I just think that the way it was done by the Warren Court was wrong, and that the Statesa ought to be able to write their own laws on it.

I have a similar positioin on Gay Marriage. Legally I don't think there can be a definition of Gay Marriage but Im not against Civil Unions.

I'm a realist.

Seriously though, I guess if I had to assign a label it would be "moderate."

My feelings boil down to this:

Social: Mostly liberal. Stay out of my bedroom as long as everything is consensual and of-age. Let gays get married. LIberal on most other matters as well, except I have no tolerance for laziness, whining, and not doing everything in one's ability first to help oneself. (Yes, I know some people are physically and mentally challenged, which is I said "in one's ability." By the way, drug/alcohol addition is not included in this caveat. Get help.) I am undecided on how I feel about abortion, because it IS taking an innocent life, as I see it, but I'm not going to tell others what to do.

Economic: Mainly conservative, but generous on things like public education and giving to charity. Giving never hurt anybody. Also, I don't have negative feelings about rich people unless they broke the law. (Being able to get someone to pay you an enormous salary isn't breaking the law.) I see most rich people as a huge support to the economy and social welfare (through their enormous giving via foundations, etc)

Taxes: I favor the Fair Tax proposal. As a business owner, I pay waa-aaay too much in taxes. But I do it, just like I pay my own health insurance. Cost of life.

Environment: I can't expect the goverment to do what humans won't.

Conservative.

Conservative on defense.

Extremely Conservative fiscally.

Socially Conservative.

Conservative on gay marriage, but support unions. No reason why they shouldnt be able to get the same benefits as a married couple.

Conservative on firearm rights. I am a firearm owner and extremely pro-gun.

Moderate on abortion. I support the right for a woman to choose whether to get an abortion or not. I do not agree with abortion though unless it is necessary to save the womans life. I would rather people decide not to get an abortion because of their hearts than a law.

Seperation of Church and State: I support a secular America w/ no national religion. Religion should be kept out of government, schools, ect.

So, Fly,
Living in San Fransisco, you know that your wonderful Mayor once again had one of his moments and just this week reinforced the fact that SF is an "illegal alien safe zone."

We all know, that illegals are more than taken advantage of by big and small business both by paying them substandard wages and *no* benefits.

Where do you stand? You've said, you're about "curbing exploitation of people for cheap labor," so tell us, do you support this liberal mayor on this issue?

Most all liberals are strongly for illegal aliens rights, in return for their Democrat Party votes, of course, and you say you're 100% liberal. I'm interested on how you stand here.

I'm pretty liberal... On issues like gay marriage and abortion rights, I'm strongly liberal. On subjects like illegal immigration, I'm more moderate... As someone who lives in an area directly affected by that problem, I know SOMETHING has to be done.

Other issues like gun rights... I'm indifferent. I don't want to see guns taken away, but they need to be regulated better so nuts like Cho Seung-Hui can't get one so easily. I am completely against the war, and do want to see an immediate withdrawal.

Some stupid made-up internet test said I'm something like 85% liberal and 15% conservative, which actually is a pretty good description...

I would say moderate/common sense-ist:

Gay marriage: I think the same next-of-kin and other rights which apply to married couples should apply to homosexual ones. If you don't want to call it marriage - fine, don't. But the rights themselves should not be denied. I also feel homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt, assuming they are fit parents.

Abortion: Should be allowed in the first trimester, with no restrictions or notification required. Not allowed in the second or third trimester except in cases of rape, incest, or where the mother's life is in danger.

National defense/security: I feel that the war in Iraq should not have happened. The resources being used there should have been focused on rooting out terrorist in Afghanistan and shoring up the lines of defense on the homefront (port security, rail, etc).

Death penalty: I do not like the death penalty because it cannot be reversed once carried out. With the crookedness of the legal system these days (i.e. winning more important than truth), I cannot in good faith support this sentence.

Guns: Since most 'gun' crimes are committed with illegally obtained weapons (the VaTech massacre being a tragic exception), the efforts need to be directed to prevent the proliferation of illegal firearms. With that said, I support the rights of a citizen to own a gun with proper background checks and safety training (as required).

Religion: You cannot force 'faith', no matter how much you try. Religion is something that should flourish in a family-led environment, not the classroom.
How you actually act is more important than how you claim you act. I might not go to church, but I live very cleanly because I feel it's the right thing to do.

Healthcare: Healthcare must be guaranteed to every person that needs it. I don't know exactly how this would work... but it should happen.

Immigration: Enforce the laws as they are. If they allow a day-worker program, that's fine, as crossing the border would be subject to some regulation. If one is living here already, give them a chance to become a US citizen by passing the necessary tests. Otherwise, rigidly enforce the laws as-is.
