More Than 2 Million Turks Protest Against AKP

Mon Apr 30, 2007 2:41 am

Currently a huge protest demo is under way in Istanbul, with an estimated 2 million Istambulis, who fight against the nomination of mr. Gul as future president. The large majority of Turks are fervent defenders of Atatürks laic state-constitution and the army is considered as defenders of the constitution.
GUl is member of the ruling Islamic party AKP .
The military has threatened to intervene if the Islamic Government would try to cement their grip by pushing Gul through three successive votes in the Ankara parliament.I wish all the best to Turkey and hope Ataturk's heritage will not be ruined!

In your opinion what would the government be like if the Islamic government gains control? Would it only be a temporary transfer of power common to any country with elections or would the new government attempt to consolidate power to change the current system? Mustafa Kemal was a visionary who would be rolling in his grave if this does end up in the latter direction. Perhaps we could find another Latife Usakligil. Maybe she's in the Bronx.  Wink

The vast majority of the Turkish population are extremely attached to Kemal's visions and the role he imposed to the constitution. The role of women in Turkey is quite comparable to the role in most European countries-thanks to Kemal !
If the generals in Ankara would have to chose between complying to European rules or defending Kemal's visions, their choice is made in one second! Laic constitution is a dogma for the military and they will defend it whatsover arrives !
It's the only military coups I actually approve, since they grant Turkeys door to modernity and progress.
Erdogan and Gül do not represent the true progressive Turkey ! Problem is the un-structured political laic oposition in Turkey.
I'm a big fan of Turkey and follow the events with great interest.Although Erdogan and Gül sell theselves as a moderate islamists, their wifes wears scarves even on foreign official trips. That portrays a back-ward immage of Turkey abroad, not helping the more educated population.

The constitutional court in Ankara has declared the first round of votes for the election of the future president as nil and void, opening the door for anticipated elections.
Mr. Gül will nevertheless try to catch a constitutional majority tomorrow in Ankara's parliament, but chances he'll succeed are slim.
