Who Will Be This NFL Drafts Biggest Bust?

Mon Apr 30, 2007 8:38 am

Not attempting the a parallel thread, but I was reading an article in the USA Today about the some of the hyped players that we busts. So with the first rounders, who do you think will be this years bust?
My guess for 07: Calvin Johnson, because of his lack of focus, which lead to some key dropped passes. Nothing scientific, but that's my gut feeling. We'll see. I could be wrong.
Here's the top 10:
1) Ryan Leaf, QB Washington State
2) Tony Mandarich, OT Michigan State
3) Brian Bosworth, LB Oklahoma
4) Akili Smith, QB Oregon
5) Lawrence Phillips, RB Nebraska
6) Heath Shuler, QB Tennessee
7) Blair Thomas, Ki-Jana Carter, Curtis Enis - RBs Penn State
8) Bruce Pickens, CB Nebraska
9) Andre Ware, QB Houston
10) Todd Marinovich, QB USC

Will this years draft deal an addition to the list?

I'm going to go with Brady Quinn, especially since QBs make up half of the Top 10 list in the thread starter. Plus overall, the success rate of QBs picked in the First Round isn't that great.

The top two Lions draft picks, Calvin Johnson and the QB Slanton. Nothing against the talent, but they are in Motown.

Actually, my vote goes to Ted Ginn Jr. WTF was Cam Cameron smoking?

Actually, I am thinking Jamaal Anderson from the Falcons. He has some talent, but I dont think he was worth a top 10 pick. I would have chosen Okoye or Ginn Jr.

I am going to go out on a limb and say Adrien Peterson. Seem to have way too many injury issues to be selected in the top 10.

Carter actually played well for a time. It was more a matter of that early knee injury shortening his career

I don't know if you can really call a guy a bust when he shouldn't have been drafted at that point in the first place. Can't blame Ginn for it. That being said, Ginn has a good chance to be a Dante Hall-esque difference maker in the league.

I was surprised that we didn't draft Okoye since Petrino was his college coach.

Considering the history we had with our previous player of a similar name (minus one a), I hope lightning doesn't strike twice.

You never know, but the general concensus is that the Dolphins had a train wreck of a draft.

Yeah, it'll be real freaking impressive to see him return a ball to the 35-40 yard line so we can go 3 and out.  sarcastic

1,144 rushing yards in 10 seasons (not exactly a short career.)

Yeah, that's really good for an overall number 1 draft pick.

Let me clarify it a bit more. 59 games over 10 seasons. 319 rushing attempts for 1144 yards (19.4/game) for an average of 3.6 per carry (fair but not great.) Definitely one of the biggest draft busts of all times.

The point I was making is that Carter wasn't a bust for lack of talent or character, it was the he blew out his knee during his first camp.

We'll never know honestly. He could have had the best knees in the world and been a complete bust as well.

Good point. There is also the question of those who's careers were cut short by personal conduct issues as in the case with those like Lawrence Phillips and Ricky Williams. Both were running backs that were top prospects in college but were busts becuase they couldn't walk the straight line and stay out of trouble. Lawrence Phillips with his flagrant disregard for the coaching staff, and his numerous run-ins with the police. Ricky Williams with his drug problems dispite some flashes of brilliance in his years of playing. He is however, coming back to the Dolphins this year to play after his one year suspension, so he's not completely a lost cause. The Dolphins will need him to be great otherwise, he'll fall into the bust catagory.
