If I Ran Pittsburgh...

Tue May 08, 2007 5:38 am

I had to make this statement...

I just downloaded google earth, and I clicked on some features on Pittsburgh, and came across a link about the city. I found this one link via Wikipedia that the city, due to its population loss and economic collapse, the city will likely face a shortage of AT LEAST 125,000 jobs by 2008. This little article stated that employers could increase employees' salaries to stimulate some kind of desire for other people to move back to the region...

Recently, Pittsburgh LOST corporate headquarters -- THREE to be exact to New York, including 2 Pittsburgh start up companies from more than a century ago: Alcoa and Mellon Financial. If I ran the city, I would propose some incentive to big companies out there to entice them to stay put and to keep their employees out there. The cash could/should be used for salary increases to entice people to stay out there, as well as to entice other people to relocate to the region. The area has some of the cheapest housing and living costs of any major metropolitan region in the country. Pittsburgh still his home to 6 Fortune 500 companies, with a few other companies that will likely join the ranks within a few years. I would aggressively attempt to bring 125 thousand people back to the region by showing off our healthcare and tech background. Pittsburgh is said to become a front-runner in robotics and other technologies.

One of the Fortune 500 companies is the Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) company, which could contribute to the technologies sector. I would focus on big technology companies to entice them to create jobs in the region. The kinds of jobs I would like to create would be in the entry and intermediate levels, and essentially target people in the 25 to 34-year-olds population group. Pittsburgh, of the largest metropolitan statistical areas in the US, has the smallest concentration of people within the 25-34 year olds bracket.

I realize that this is one huge fish to fry. I just hope that the city can find a way to plug this leak, as in, stop people from leaving and to try and bring people back into the region. I think that Pittsburgh is facing a very, VERY serious problem regarding population and job loss, and is facing a financial crisis. No one seems to be taking aggressive action in this regard. This is just one vision of mine. Others are welcome, for those of us who lived in or near this great American city anyway... I just see this city vanishing from the map year after year. Other cities develop around it and are ultimately surpassing Pittsburgh, and these are smaller cities, too...

Not only would I propose to give companies incentives to remain in Pittsburgh and to keep or even add employees there, I would also propose to annex some surrounding municipalities to increase tax revenues, without raising the taxes themselves. I think that by expanding the city beyond its current area of 55 square miles, they city can increase tax revenues considerably without driving taxes up. Instead of limiting taxes, politicians out there want to increase them. And they scratch their heads about why people leave? Lower taxes, combine some municipalities with the city; there are too many in Allegheny County anyway -- 130 municipalities, plus the City of Pittsburgh... That is way too much, and it is financially suffocating the city.

Pittsburgh needs a change...

Incentives for business just sound too "Republican" to be accepted there.
Old union towns don't take too kindly to that. Can't you just hear the election campaign ads?
"Candidate X ignores the working man, giving millions to **Big Business**!"

I love the town, but if there were jobs there I wouldn't be typing this from Arizona.
...Where I hang out with 2 of my sisters, both of their husbands, a dentist buddy, his ex, my ex and her family... All of whom are displaced Pittsburghers between the ages of 27 and 44. So many ex-yinzers out here it is kinda sad.
The weather in AZ is nice, true, but we'd have never left Pittsburgh if we could find decent jobs there. Watch the Steelers/Cardinals game here this season and you'll see where our hearts are.

Man, the way that looks, I'd say Pittsburgh has dug it's grave over the years, is screwed, up the river... WHICH river I am not so sure...

My grandma described the politics out there to be "old school..." Well the old school way of doing things has been dismissed. I don't see it working anymore... If that city is supposed to survive, then the people have to wake up and accept change. Hopefully things will change with 26-year-old Mayor Ravenshtawl. Even at that, I guess chances of any recovery are slim to none...

I would have never moved to Lancaster if I would have found work either, and I am in the field of urban/transportation planning. I guess that makes one hell of a statement about my beloved hometown...

I know that there was a proposal by Peduto to merge the city with the county, which would make Pittsburgh one of the most populous downtowns again. The problem with that is that the independent municipalities wish to remain, well independent. I think there is an even greater inevitable risk involved with this though. If Pittsburgh, God forbid, goes bankrupt, the entire county and surrounding region gets flushed down the toilet along with the city itself...

Too "republican???" God forbid anyone does anything right out there... and this from a democrat!  sarcastic

Seriously. If Go3Team thought that was a craphole, then he's obviously never been there recently, unless he was in a bad part of the city... People have told me, after visiting Pittsburgh, there is a lot to do.

Do you like being out doors? There is camping up in Moraine State Park, a hop skip and a leap up I-79 near Butler, PA. There is also Ohiopyle Park in Fayette County for hiking and white water rafting. The Yough River has some of the best white water rafting available in the US of A for Heaven's sake!

And...

Pittsburgh is on the verge of gaining a Nat'l Historic Park. Check out riversofsteel.com some time. There are plans there of turning the Carrie Furnace site and surrounding grounds into a Nat'l Historic Park that could draw hundreds of thousands of tourists a year.

The city is also reinventing itself. Try walking down 5th Avenue some time, or take a stroll along Penn Ave in the Strip District, or down on Southside and stop in one of 99 bars along Carson St. There are a lot of places to go to in Pittsburgh, more than people realize or think. I didn't even mention Oakland yet, or Schenley Park, or Frick Park... Kennywood... Kennywood just purchased an old abandoned mill site where they want to add more roller coasters and even an indoor water park, under the condition that the Mon Fey Expressway is completed...

I want to see all of this happen...

Old school politics are still in play here. From the city to all the small towns and suburbs, you can't even think about getting elected if your on a Republican ticket. Look at the debacle that the casino lisence caused. Rendell, Onorato, and Ravenstahl screwed that up big time. Isle of Capri was willing to build a brand new arena at no taxpayer cost, and they decided to pick someone else. Tell me back door politics weren't involved there!

I wouldn't mind living there either. They just need to creat jobs instead of conceding them to other cities...
