What Makes Old People Smell Oldpeople-ish?

Fri May 11, 2007 4:45 am

...it's something I've always wondered, and been brutally reminded of today.

A potential colleague of my client today is 83 years old... and he's got a stench powerful enough to peel the skin off of a potato. Poor Patrick keeps "forgetting" things outside of his office, so he can run out for fresh air every few minutes-- the rest of us have been making fun of him for about the last hour (they're still in there as I type this).

I just walk past this guy and got bitchslapped up the head with his funk, it's totally unreal. He's quite well-dressed, not unkepmt at all, nor is he poor by any stretch. He just friggin' REEKS!!! And the thing is, it's not B.O., in the form most of us know it. There's really no way to describe it other than old-people-funk.... we've all (unfortunately) smelled it before, just think back to your last time visiting a hospital or nursing home: the smell of pills & piss.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • That said, what do you think causes this?
  • Why does it appear unique to the elderly?
  • Why do not only the offenders, but those who spend time around them (i.e., this guy's wife is as old as he is, and she smells 100% normal, nor does she seem to be bothered in the least by him) seem immune?

    What say you?

    That's the formaldehyde. That's why Granny's so well-preserved.

The elderly often have trouble controlling their bladders, not by their own fault. You can probably take as much care as you want of yourself, wear absorbents (or whatever adult diapers are called euphemistically) and change your underwear frequently, but still be unable to get rid of that stench completely.

1 what the hell is that a picture of?

    2. I had this guy at work like that. He could walk past my office and leave a smell trail that would last for at least 10 minutes. I shit you not, I could open my door and I would know that he had walked by.

It's probably a mix of all of the various ointments, liniments and lotions they use. Prep H mixed with Asorbine Jr., Epsom salts, Ben-Gay and so on (like the overdose of cologne/perfume) I believe are the ingredients in "old people smell". That's a scent you'll never see a tree air freshener of.

I seem to have some peers that have a similar, milder smell. It's the fragrance equivalent of "stale" or "1970s sofa". I'm afraid to ask mutual friends and I keep smelling myself to make sure it's not me Yeah sure.

Most likely stuff they used to wear that no one except them wears today. Examples: Lavender fragrance, Vitalis, Brylcream, Old Spice deodorants, etc. Also, whatever ointments, liniments that they use can also smell. Also, old things just smell. Younger/middle age people don't use these things anymore so we're not used to it. Maybe if we went back to the 60s everyone would smell "old people-ish".

    1. Their own sense of smell is failing and they cannot detect their own odor.

    2. They tend to bathe less often because it can be difficult.

    3. They are not as active, so they believe they do not sweat.

    4. Their clothes are not washed as often and tend to be worn more than once.

Excuse me ... I need to go get some air.

If you think that walking by some old dude is bad, just think of Larry King's much younger wife.

She has to blow that old dude every night to earn her keep.

Just think how bad that must reek.

    > old people often are too much indoors, AND tend to use clothes out of anti-moth treated places
    > old people use toilet articles which were "en vogue" in the 1920ies and 1930ies and 1940ies
    > those who often are together with old people get used to that "smell" and possibly automatically open windows when being in the homes of them
** strange is that old people smell in such a way who for decades opposed exactly this particular smell

My wife's grandmother used to bake cookies that absorbed the stench of mothballs. I didn't even know moths had balls. Guess they'd have to. Must be very tiny. I do know, however, that they taste like crap.  yuck

Not really. As it also occurs with elderly people who have this aspect nicely under control. But simply apply toiletry of the 1960ies for a day, and people will frown at you before long !

The "mothballs" are NOT from the moths '! but against the moths. Modern anti-moth articles no longer smell, but older people often use the mothballs and other such outdated devices to keep their clothes "moths-free" .
