Mullet Resurgence?

Fri May 11, 2007 4:52 am

On my recent trips to Spain, Italy, and South America I've been noticing a disturbing trend among young 20-something males. It appears that the mullet is making a comeback, not amongst the older or trucker set, but mostly the "metrosexuals". In Argentina apparently it's called the "Corte Cubano", which is Spanish for "fugly". What gives?

I am not happy with the idea of the 'number 7' making a comeback. How could a 'neck warmer' ever be considered fashionable?

Yabbut this is less white trash and slightly more fashion forward but still an egregious crime against humanity. I've only seen it on Latinos really and it's usually accompanied by a messenger bag and sunglasses you know will be a bygone fad in 20 minutes.

" ... A stroll through one of Seville's abundant parks after school hours will reveal gangs of young people sporting mullets as proof of their good fashion sense. The Spanish mullet, known as the greita, is typically quite distinct from the type traditionally sported by the country singers and World Wrestling Entertainment wrestlers of American culture. Rather than a flowing mane, it is a sharply cut square with errant strands stretching toward the shoulders, always gelled to perfection ... "

By this, I mean that those elements that characterize what we Americans look back on as a 10-year lapse of good taste, the 1980s, have been welcomed whole-heartedly into the collective embrace of Spanish pop culture.

Agreed. Why screw up (what one assumes is) a perfectly good flattop by gelling the front to within an inch of it's life?
Every time I see that hairstyle I'm reminded of Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary.

A typical 1930s-1940s hairstyle. Short on the sides and back, but rather long on top, gelled back (they didn't call the WW2 RAF fighter pilots the "Brill-Creame boys"for nothing).
In the 1920s the sides were almost shaved, with the top long and combed back.
The most extreme is the Prussian crew cut, put a military waist belt around the head, over the ears, mark it's upper edge and shave of anything beneath it. The top stays long and gets combed back. Essentiaeverything sticking out of a military cap would be shaved off.

Never had a mullet. In my early 20s (back during the late 1980s) I had long hair, worn as a pony tail, and an Osama Bin Laden beard. I was also wearing old Army boots, an old Army jacket, jeans and I was riding a motorbike. I wanted to look somehow viking style, but was a bit too skinny to reach this effect. Also, the fact that I was wearing glasses didn't help either.
The picture in my driving licence still shows me in this attire, but I don't have a working scanner.

It certainly makes sense that the mullet will make a comeback. Let's see, we've seen the resurgence of styles (clothing and hair) from the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. It's only a matter of time until the Billy Ray Cyrus/Joey Buttafuco look comes back to life like an Hezbollah sleeper cell. That said, the mullet hasn't gone out of style in our neighbor to the north. In fact, it is widely accepted here in the US a primary source of ID.

*Shudder* Well there are certain things that certain races face an uphill battle trying to make work, like black men with straightened hair (see J. Alexander, Lenny Kravitz), white people with cornrows (watch the people getting off any CUN flight in the US), Asians with bleach blond hair (seems to end up orrange more often than not), but I've never seen a mullet look good....on anyone. Same goes for dreads as a matter of fact Smile.

Some dreadlock do look nice. I think it only looks good on Blacks, as long as it's maintained and stylish. I don't understand why some Whites with blonde hair do it. It looks awful.

I hated it when my black ex-wife would plait hair extensions into her hair. Usually she took hair from India (poor Indian women cut off their long, straight, black hair to sell it). Ok, her own hair was brittle and kinky and she couldn't let it grow very long (just maybe for 2-3 inches before it would break off), but it was her OWN hair. I hated to touch the hair of a stranger on her. Additionally putting these extensions in was very expensive and took several hours at the hairdresser about twice a month.

Some women can get away with short hair and look very attractive. Many west African woman pull it off very well. My ex from Liberia had short hair and she was gorgeous. She didn't bother with the fake hair at all.
