MDorBust's Wet Dream

Fri May 11, 2007 7:43 am

As he stated in this thread... RE: What Guns Do You Own? (by MDorBust Apr 7 2007 in Non Aviation) MDorBust wanted to get a Saiga 12. Well, I just happened to pick one up today....

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h56/kmaf/Crap/100_0100.jpg

It's a gas-operated, magazine-fed, semi-automatic, 12 gauge shotgun built on an AK-47 receiver. I'll probably go out and shoot it for the first time tomorrow.

You can easily see the family relationship:

They had to make a major change to the gas pushrod to accomodate the huge 12 gauge round:

MDorBust, eat your heart out!!! Anybody else ever tried one of these?

Yes, I am very jealous now.

But... I did manage to pick up a new condition used P22 from Cabelas last Saturday for $99. Apparently the last owner became dissatisfied after firing a couple hundred rounds through it and having very bad jamming problems. Amazing how well it performed after I took it home and CLEANED IT (three times).

Tell me how it performs. You can be my guinea pig.

Yeah, the only problem is that I'm gonna have to take a friggin' trunk to transport all the guns I want to take! And this thing weighs 8 pounds, the ammo for it weighs a ton! If I do decide to take it to BHM, I probably won't take any ammo because WallyWorld has 12 gauge really cheap.

Quoting MDorBust (Reply 2):

devil  I'll try to remember to take some video while shooting it tomorrow.

Quoting MDorBust (Reply 2):

It came with a 5-round magazine and if I like it and don't have any problems with it I'll probably pick up a couple of 10-round mags for it. The only problem is that 10-round mags are about $60 each.

WOW! What a deal! Lucky duck! I know of at least one other A.netter that has a P22.

Don't you just love that? Some .22's are also really picky about ammo. My Sig Mosquito is VERY picky and only runs correctly with 40gr. MiniMag's.

I had problems with lead fouling. Got a new barrel from Walther and now shoot Stingers and it shoots fine. I got a G22 last week; pretty neat gun.

I have a couple of "items" I purchased, waiting for ATF to issue my stamps. Will share pics when they are in my hands.

A semi-automatic 12 guage... I feel sorry for anyone who tries to break into your place!

Out of curiosity though, what type of activity do you use that type of a gun for? I've been duck hunting, and using a gun like that seems like it'd take all the fun out of the sport...

Oh, I don't know, after I put a few hundred rounds through it, it will probably replace the Mossberg Maverick 88 behind the bedroom door and loaded with 00 Buckshot. Otherwise, I will practice with it to maintain proficiency and I might go bird hunting with it. It's mainly just a novelty for me because it is a unique design and it should be very dependable.

There are a lot of tube-fed semi-auto shotguns that are very popular for hunting, such as the Remington 1100 which holds 9 rounds ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_1100 ). The main difference with this shotgun is that it is magazine-fed and can be reloaded quickly. When I saw it in the store, I figured I'd better pick it up while I can because you never know when they might be banned.

I talked to him on the phone a couple of months ago. He said he was not around the computer much anymore but I wanted to respect his reasons for why he wasn't so I didn't ask. He did say that he still planned to go to BHM. I might try to give him a call tomorrow to see how he's doing. If I talk to him I'll let you know what I find out.

Not yet, I went out to one of the ranges to visit with the owner for a bit and he had to leave shortly after I got there. I'm going to another range this afternoon so I might try it then. There's also an IDPA match tomorrow morning I'm going to shoot in so I might wait till after the match to try it since I'll be there anyway.

I just talked to Ilikeyyc a few minutes ago. He's doing well, but he's been pretty busy lately. The reason he hasn't been around is because he's been without a computer. Have no fear, he'll be around again soon because he just ordered a new computer. He said he recently acquired a Rossi .357 Magnum with a 2" barrel.

I still haven't shot the Saiga-12 for the first time yet! Last Saturday I was out at the bigger range that I go to but unbelieveably, here in the middle of a desert, the shotgun range was completely flooded! It had been 3 days since we'd had any rain but there was still several inches of standing water so I didn't get the try it.

I hope I like it because I just bought 2 more magazines for it. This contraption came with a 5-round mag, and I just bought 2 10-round mags for it, $75 each!

So now I can have this loaded with 11x 3" magnum 00 buckshot shells, 15 pellets per shell = total of 165 .34 caliber, 54 grain projectiles per loading or with all 3 magazines that's 390 .34 caliber projectiles. Cool! That's going to shred a lot of paper targets and gallon milk jugs filled with water pretty quickly!

I FINALLY SHOT IT.

Late this afternoon, we went out to the range and I shot the Saiga-12 for the first time. Here was the first challenge:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h56/kmaf/Crap/Saiga12/IM002513.jpg

Even after no rain for a week and a half, the shotgun range was under more than a foot of water in some places. So, I cheated and just went over to one of the pistol bays. Like somebody is gonna bitch at me for not using the shotgun range, right?

The gun functioned perfectly straight out of the box, no failures of any kind. Then again, being a close cousin of the AK-47 you certainly would expect it to be reliable. The only complaint I have is that the 5-round magazine is much too small. It makes me glad I shelled out the $150 to go ahead and order the 2 10-round magazines. I also found out yesterday that a 19-round drum is available for $319, so I'll probably be sending in my $150 deposit for that next week because they are only made to order so far.

Here's a quick and dirty video of me shooting it. No complaining about form, like I said this was just quick and dirty so I didn't get caught using the wrong range:

We're gonna have fun in BHM!!!

Edited to fix video link.

I shot buckshot in it, too. The buckshot loads actually are slightly easier to shoot because the projectile load is lighter (more air space or buffer material between pellets).

Did you see what I meant about the magazine being too small?

Here are some demos of the drum mag that I want to get. BTW, I don't think these guys shoot much, their rate of fire is not that high:

My brother and I took the Saiga-12 with us to shoot at the range in Ozona, Texas and we had a GREAT time. It preformed flawlessly and we gave it quite a workout shooting both ground-level and airborne targets with a wide variety of loads. Here's a video of my brother shooting it at a target 15 yards away with the 10-round magazine filled to capacity with 00-Buckshot, 12 pellets per round, cylinder-bore (open) choke in less than 3 seconds:

And here's the result:
