NASCAR: Darlington 11/36

Fri May 11, 2007 10:50 am

OK everyone, here's the Darlington thread for NASCAR reace 11 out of 36.

Previous threads: NASCAR: Richmond 10/36 (by AllegiantAir May 3 2007 in Non Aviation) NASCAR: Talladega 4/07 (by AllegiantAir Apr 28 2007 in Non Aviation)

Winners this season so far:
Daytona - Kevin Harvick
California - Matt Kenseth
Las Vegas - Jimmie Johnson
Atlanta - Jimmie Johnson
Bristol - Kyle Busch
Martinsville - Jimmie Johnson
Texas - Jeff Burton
Phoenix - Jeff Gordon
Talladega - Jeff Gordon
Richmond - Jimmie Johnson

Things to talk about:
JR's separation from DEI

HMS's dominence with the CoT

Kanhe and Stremme feud

When will Michael Waltrip make his next race?

Feel free to post other topics to talk about too!

Kreg

P.S. ANCFlyer or any of the mods, you can lock the Richmond thread.

Can we hire someone to go to every race and shoot out the tires on both Jeff Gordon's and Jimmie Johnson's cars? Please?

90% of the pre-race show will be about Junior's departure from DEI.

I don't mind JJ so much, I can't stand Gordon. But you gotta admit - they got it going on right now. Hendrick's cars are kicking ass. Couple a great car with a great driver and you've got a winning team.

I don't think you hit a tire going by you at 195 mph, but I'd pay real $$$ to see another driver plant Gordon in a wall each race . . .

See, I'm just the opposite, I can't stand Johnson winning but can stand Gordon (not Robby Wink ) winning. If any of the Hendrick cars win, I hope it's Mears or Kyle Busch.

Me too - especially if it's Robby Gordon, Kevin Harvick, or either of the Busch brothers. Better yet, all five of them take each other out in the same wreck.  Silly

Hard to pick against the Hendrick drivers this week - but I'm sticking with Hamlin.

I never wish anyone to end up smacking the wall or otherwise be in an accident that could kill or maim them, even Jeff Gordon. Jimmie Johnson is definitely on a streak of a career and will probably continue to be a strong top 5 finisher.
Wouldn't it be a karma blast if Junior was to win  biggrin  I bet there will be a lot of fans cheering for him there and the rest of the season to win just to stick it to DEI and his step mom from hell.
One issue that to me NASCAR has to figure out how to deal with better very soon is over the late yellow flags/race stops due to debris, minor accidents and oil leaks/blown engines. These tend to tighten up the field too much upon the restart and often set off another big accident as cars bang into each other trying to bump up their position - literally.

Texas is a city? Big grin

I think he used the name which is in the track's official name... Fontana is officially California Speedway, and the track in Ft Worth is Texas Motor Speedway

If you're 5 or more laps down with 50 to go, you must get off the track. Less rolling wrecks to shed debris, blow up, cut tires, etc. Also, extend the ten lap rule (where lapped cars must start behind lead-lap cars in one line) to that same 50-lap timeframe.

I noticed the Smoke/Newman mini-feud carried over to the Busch race tonight. They did some beating & banging late at Richmond & again tonight. Newman ended up with a cut tire & spun after contact from Tony.

The Haas cars (Sauter & Jeff Green) had a pretty nice run at Phoenix (9th & 6th respectively I think) & were towards the front for a while at Talladega.

Due to rain, the race has been postponed to Sunday, 1 pm. For those that planned to tape it tonight, they will just get COPS reruns (although ANC Flyer probably likes that show).
Of course with the rain out, like at Richmond, it will 'wash' the track of the old rubber, oil and so on and may affect some drivers and cars.

Interesting note, tomorrow is Mother's Day in the US. How many fans just had Mother's Day plans dashed. This is the first year in a few NASCAR has scheduled a race on Mother's Day weekend. I think it was a bad call. I don't think we'll see this again next year.

NASCAR has had a race on Mother's Day weekend (albeit scheduled for Saturday night) since 2005 when they expanded to 36 races.

They won't ever race on Easter, but have that stupid week off after the second race in California in February. I have never understood why they would give them a week off after two races... just stupid.

Take that week off, and put it on Mother's Day weekend. That gives the teams a week off before the two-week show in Charlotte.

Here. Educate yourself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother's_Day

In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honour of those mothers whose sons had died in war. Nine years after the first official Mother's Day holiday, commercialization of the U.S. holiday became so rampant that Anna Jarvis herself became a major opponent of what the holiday had become. Mother's Day continues to this day to be one of the most commercially successful U.S. holidays.

I don't think Pres. Wilson had stock in Hallmark, OR FTD . . . .

Well, considering the number of fans that are already screwed from yesterday non-race, I can imagine they didn't want to push the race into the following week.

I just got back from brunch so I haven't been able to watch the race, but from what I'm reading it seems to be pretty boring. Not a good debut for the COT on a longer track than the previous four we've raced at with the COT. I hope all the COT races at longer tracks like Darlington are like this race!

Gordon's the MAN! I was afraid the engine was going to grenade on the last lap...it even made it through the burnout, though. I've had an awful few days...I feel a little better now.

Note to self: never question Steve Letarte again.  Wink

I missed a chunk of the middle of the race, but I was glad to see Smoke get a top 10 after having the tire trouble & going down a lap.

They usually postpone Sunday races to Monday...Saturday rainouts are run on Sundays if possible. I see what you mean, but in this case, they couldn't wait until Monday- there's a test session at LMS tomorrow & Tuesday.

I said it before in NASCAR thread on here, I'll say it again:

"Big Bill created NASCAR. Bill France, Jr. helped it grow & put it into the mainstream. Brian France may kill it."

From what I can tell on a racing forum I post on, most fans (myself included) place most of the blame on the new crap on Brian France & Mike Helton. Brian took the sport to newer venues at the expense of the old-school Southern fans who have been loyal to the sport for years. They took a date from Darlington (the Southern 500 Labor Day weekend, which is sacreligious, IMO) because of lower attendance & sent it to California Speedway. California struggles to fill the stands, yet there's still a race there. The Rock is gone because it didn't sell out & partly because Bruton Smith wanted another race at Texas. And some fans in the South feel alienated because of it. I understand the need for races out West, but NASCAR's pursuit of "big markets" may come back to haunt them.

I see the need for a safer car with the COT, but those things look similar to Australian V8 racecars. They definitely screwed up the visual appeal of it. I think it was Jeff Gordon that came out & said something like "You know, they could've come out with a really cool looking car, but they did this.

I do like the Green-White-Checkered rule, though. It's better than seeing a race "end" with 3 or 4 laps to go because they can't get the track cleaned up in time to finish the race.

Last chance race for the guys who aren't already locked in to the All-Star race. Consists of anybody that hasn't won a race in the previous year & a half. Top 2 finishers get in, plus a fan vote winner (poll at NASCAR.com).

It's a B-Main (for you sprint-car guys) or qualifying race where the at least the winner - sometimes more - gets into the All-Star Challenge. Basically it's for drivers who don't otherwise qualify for the All-Star Challenge, and gives them a shot to get in. Michael Waltrip won "The Winston" (as it was known then) after transferring from the Open (he finished 5th in the Open) in 1996.

In addition, for a few years now there has been a fan vote to select one additional driver to the All-Star Challenge field. I don't know when that started...

They usually postpone Sunday races to Monday...Saturday rainouts are run on Sundays if possible. I see what you mean, but in this case, they couldn't wait until Monday- there's a test session at LMS tomorrow & Tuesday.

NASCAR has a next-day policy, it just happened that this next-day was Mother's Day.

Quoting DeltaRules (Reply 36):

I'd like to see you say that strapped in as PAX after that race, much less driving it.

So Jeff wins again. At least (as the FOX commentators noted) the fans at Darlington didn't throw trash on the track as Jeff won. Jr. was classy about his 8th place finish, he didn't blame others or the COT, but himself for getting too close to the wall a couple of times. Jimmy Johnson is on a roll this year too, with another great finish. Hamlin was close, and ran well all day, but he fizzled at the end.
At least they ran a race at the end for a number of laps instead of a stop or caution leading to a dash for the cash with a big crash. I am concerned with the inconstancy of when late race yellows/stops are occurring as it is ticking off many NASCAR fans and drivers.
The COT seems to have several issues that need to be dealt with ASAP. They seem to have serious problems with engine cooling (a number of cars were steaming like a tea kettle), brake cooling (perhaps leading to some accidents including on pit row), keeping tight on the track (on the one turn there were a lot of cars getting near sideways) as well as continuing issues with the exaust systems.

Impressive run by Hamlin. Most laps led and a career high for him.

Stewart came back from the flat tire to finish sixth, also a damn fine run.

Still - Henrick's cars are kicking ass.

They need to open up more space on the grilles (replace the decal with an actual opening), and let the teams do what they want for brake ducts (this one is a safety issue). As for the handling... NASCAR controls all the dimensions, so it will take a rule change to do it. Maybe allow them an adjustable wing like some other series have?

Agreed.... the kid has talent, and should probably have 4 wins by now, but his crew keeps losing it for him.

Even the best driver can't win without a competent crew. That fumble with the left rear tire change cost him plenty.

Hey, I don't like the guy, but can't fault his stats, or his win today . . .

I did expect his engine to explode at any moment though . . . . those cautions in the last 25-30 laps saved his bacon. As they said in Hong Kong: "Joss". Still, no one can diss Henrdick cars/engines right now. They are the tallest hog at the trough.

And he's the first to lead 500+ laps in the CoT. He'll be winning, and winning a lot here shortly.

Well, it looks like a box with a wing on it.  Yeah sure

Anyway, next week is all-star weekend and I'm planning on making a thread about it,( unless you all decide against it since it's not a race toward point standings) and with a little surprise, too.  Smile
