Italian Arrested In Manila For Bad Joke

An Italian national was arrested at Manila Airport for making a joke about being a terrorist. The 58-year old man said while checking in for his flight to Hong Kong that he was carrying no less than three nuclear bombs and that he was a follower of Al Qaeda.

Hmmm... three nuclear bombs?! Well, I heard about these mini-devices in small briefcases, but in this case I think it was quite clear that this guy was just out of his mind, maybe had a drink too many. Anyway, joke or no joke, something like this is pretty serious nowadays and I think the Philippine authorities acted the right way.

But the next bit is what really gets me. The article says that the guy was arrested and could face up to seven years imprisonment. Fair enough, and that sounds impressive, doesn't it? But he can bail himself out of jail until he has to appear in court for a mere US$ 210! Where on earth did they get that ridiculously low amount from?

Some airports (like PBM) have signs saying "any inappropriate remarks regarding weapons and drugs will be taken very seriously". I think all airports should have that. But I agree, there are some things you just can't say at an airport or in an aircraft. Seven years does sound a bit harsh.

He can bail, but where can he run?

He surely can't leave the country. The Italian embassy of course brokered a deal to bail him out, besides have you ever been to a Philippine Jail? They are just as notorious as there neighboring countries jail, ones we've seen on TV many times.

Anyway good for him, this will teach him a lesson.

There was a bombing of a PR 747 a couple of years ago where a Japanese national was killed, and the plane made an emergency landing in Okinawa. The person left a bomb right under the seat, near the rear of the wing, thankfully this specific ex SAS jet had a different center fuel tank configuration, therefore the bomb didn't puncture the fuel tank.
This has made the authorities in MNL not joke of anything, cause they got hammered real good back then.

I can't believe that people keep doing these kind of jokes in airports! Eventhough I think that there is overreaction towards these jokes, anyone who has been on an airplane knows that airlines are very sensitive to the words "terrorist" and "bomb".
I mean, did the guy really need to make the joke? What a dumb ass! (still, 7 years in prison for this?)

I agree 100%. In Italy we say that "the mother of stupids is always pregnant". Here's another one.
