What Is Your Most Brutal Injury

Sun May 13, 2007 4:55 am

Mine happened yesterday while I was helping a friend move his furniture into his new house. As we were carrying his desktop table over the stairs to his room, he got distracted by something (which I don't care to know what it was), missed his step and slipped in the process releasing the table which came down directly onto my toe crushing it.

4/5th of my nail grove is gone. All I have now on my left toe now is the soft tissue that cuticle once covered exposed. The pain is unimaginable. I had no sleep at all last night because every time I try turning, even the slightest motion with my toe meant minutes of excruciating pain. I've had fractures, dislocations and other nasty stuffs, but nothing was as painful as what I went through yesterday. Never again would I help anyone move furniture again. And the silly guy was telling me I shouldn't worry, my cuticles will grow again one day. Thanks alot pal.  mad

Has anyone experienced anything as bad or far worst than this? Or what has been your worst injury?

Fractured skull, concussion, 3 days of lying in Intensive Care puking blood from facial lacerations, 5 more days till I was released, no pain killers until the doc was sure I wasn't heading (pun) into a coma, then monitoring for a few years to see if I'd develope epilepsy due to extensive brain tissue scarring. I didn't even notice that my shoulders and left leg were dislocated. Thank gawd for opiates.

Haha, if that toe injury is your "most brutal injury," you're having a pretty good life.  Wink

I had a similar toenail injury a while back when I wrestled. Someone fell knee first on my foot at the beginning of practice, and I just thought it hurt a bit, that's it. Two hours later after practice, I took my shoe off, and noticed my sock was now a nice shade of red. Ripping the rest of that thing off was not pleasant, I can tell you that.

Mine was probably when I was riding a friend's bike down a huge (and I mean huge), steep hill. I was going extremely fast and was about halfway down the hill. Then, a car pulls out of a driveway about 40 feet in front of me. I squeeze the back wheel break, nothing happens. At that point I'm like "Oh Shit!" My two options were to slam on the front brake, which is a no-no, or hit the car (it was a narrow road, and the car happened to be a Mercedes). So I slammed on the front brake, flipped over the front of the handlebars, and slid across the road on my the side of my face for about 3 or 4 feet. Not to mention rolling over a couple of times. The last thing I remember was coming to a stop. So I'm guessing that was when I blacked out.

The bike (and this is according to my friend, who saw the whole thing) had flipped BACK over me (hitting my arm in the process) and ended up sliding into the car's front bumper, but fortunately it didn't do any damage.

The whole left side of my face was, like, completely gone. Luckily, I was wearing a helmet, so I didn't sustain any head injuries. It was the most pain I've ever felt though, even more so than when they had to drill into my elbow bone to fix a fracture.

That taught me to always check both brakes before barreling down a big-ass hill. And it also taught me to ride my own bike. And not to trust a friend that says the bike works great.

Sorry about my story-rant. I get carried away.

When I was around 2, I was crawling around and noticed something strange hanging out of the wall. I had to investigate this strange phenomena! While probing with my newly grown sharp teeth, I discovered that this thing hanging was infact a power transport device. It basically fried the inside of my mouth and sealed half of it shut with burn juice. I almost bled to death a short time later. If I hadn't been sleeping with my mom and dad that night, and my dad hadn't noticed the bed being wet from blood, I wouldn't be around today. I had swallowed so much blood that night, that it all came up later at the hospital. I had corrective plastic surgery after (I think) everything had healed. They did a pretty good job at approximating how big my adult mouth would be. It still shows from time to time (most notably in the picture below) but other then that, no lasting effects.

When I was twelve I ran from my bedroom to answer the telephone. By some freak chance, I kicked up a pencil with my left foot so that when my right foot went down, the pencil sliced into my heel by about three inches. It required surgery to remove the pencil.

When I was fourteen I was playing in a neighborhood baseball game. When I came up to bat I hit a line drive into the pitcher's face. It broke his nose and knocked out several of his teeth. It was innocent bad luck but of course I felt very guilty about it.

Fell onto a metal patio chair in the rain after tripping on some bricks that I had put just outside a cat flap so as the kittens (Then) could reach......two fractured ribs and sternum damage  Yeah sure

Pretty painful

Trapped my middle arthritic finger in the car door a while ago, I cried.

Apart from those instances I have been lucky so far!!

My right finger got caught in the vacuum cleaner when I was 4. The scar is still there.

I'm pretty good at doing lots of stupid, but fortunately minor things to myself. About the worst pain wise was when I accidentally sliced most of the skin off my middle fingers with a lawnmower. The throttle was playing up when starting, so I'd tied it on full power to avoid restarts when emptying the grass box, only then when getting the box off, the mower began to move and without thinking I grabbed the side of the blade box to stop it, allowing my fingers to close around the inside and then chop - lots of pain and a fair bit of blood.

For those of you familiar with In-N-Out Burger, we have the potato dicer to make french fries. I was going about it at the usual fast pace when one of the potatoes collapses and i smashed my left hand in there. Thankfully it was my whole hand, as if it were just a finger, I'd lose it. I still have criss cross cut scars on the entire left side of my left hand by my pinkie.

I was at a Little League practice in 6th grade and misjudged an incoming fly ball. I got hit square on the left eye, and it promptly swelled shut. When I went to Urgent Care the next day, the CT scan they did showed that it had cracked the orbit just underneath my eye. Luckily everything stayed in the same place, and it was just a matter of waiting for the hairline fracture to heal up.

Nothing extremely bad. I did slice my eye open, and that was scary because part of it was trying to leak (or fall) out and needed immediate emergency eye care.

when i was younger (4) it was fun to race bean bags down the stairs against brother, cousins, dad, uncles, etc.

one time the bean bag didn't go.

i did. head first.

i went and got stitches in my head. mom came home from the store from a day out with the aunts. and immediately was screaming "what in the fuck did you do to my baby?"

it gave me great solace to know where *I* stood with that woman. too bad she still thinks i'm wonderful and spoils me rotten.

too bad for me the stitches have caused some slight problems with making my hair ultra uber fabulous when it grows out in length, but appropriately enough it did make for good tv hair.

outside of that, the most brutal injury comes to my ears, where i was -forced- to listen to the entire score of Les Miserables once.

I remember when I was little, we always used to slide down my friend's frozen lawn on our butts, I guess we saw it as fun. Well, one day I lost my footing on the ice sheet and went face first into the ground. My biggest worry at the time was that the tooth fairy wasn't going to come because I swallowed my teeth.  Smile

Worst accident ever for me was a bicycling accident. Luckily I was wearing a helmet and although it split, I'm still alive.

I had taken my bike into a bike shop to get the rear wheel "trued", which means all the spokes are adjusted and tensioned. Well the idiots did a piss-poor job and after I picked up the bike I only got 16 km before disaster struck.

Headed downhill on a very fast paved decent (12 speed race bike) the rear wheel imploded and I was launched......

Landed on the bike (riding cleated pedals so I couldn't get out of the pedals quick enough) and the drops of the handlebar crushed in my ribcage and punctured and collapsed one lung. Next to contact was my left shoulder which shattered the shoulder and collarbone. The tumble continued and I landed on my left hip and broke the pelvis.

4 months in hospital (gee I love morphine) and 6 months learning to walk again but I'm all back together again.

Second grade going to music class (the school was like a campus. a mobile home-like structure was kindergarten/pre-k/1st grade, then the main building, which had administration offices, 2-6th grade, and the library, another building for high school and middle school, another for the gymnasium (had Chapel there as well, and used it as an auditorium), and a small chapel for music class) I tripped on my shoe laces. Got pretty banged up from it. Made a nice permanent scar below the left nostril, and a not-so-permanent scar from there leading up to my left eye. Not pretty, I tell ya. Compared to your accidents, though, mine's child's play! Big grin

I've been fortunate myself, but can tell a lot of stories about others.

When he was a youngster a friend of mine found a long stick, and it inspired him to see if he could pole vault. The Olympians made it look easy. Off running he went with his pole, prepared to be propelled into glory. The stick bent as it was supposed to do, but then snapped. The lower fragmanet entered right under his jaw and impaled his tongue the to roof of his mouth.

He recovered, and went on to suffer other indignities.

I dislocated my shoulder and ripped out the tendons, nerves and muscles. I was jumping a fence with my horse, he got stuck on the bars and flipped over, with me still on top. Thus, I landed with the horse on top of my shoulder. Snap, crackle and pop. Pain, lots of pain.

It seems my wife has had my quota of brutal injuries.

Me: Managed to flip my big toe on one of those metal braces that holds down carpet in doorways. I didn't really notice it at the time and sat down to work on the computer and my toe looked green/purple/blue. I went to bed that night but couldn't sleep at all. I woke up in the morning and could barely move. The thing had swollen up extremely badly. My parents were away on holiday and my brother was in another country. I had to ask one of my neighbours to take me to hospital and she was very good to me. I'd only fractured my toe but getting anywhere fast was really though. After a week I was able to wear shoes again on that foot and a week after that I was back playing sports.

Wife: Hit head on by a box truck on the interstate. She going 65mph the box truck going about 60mph.

Three weeks in neurological intensive care, three months of therapy and countless other issues. Lucky to be alive...

Holy crap. I saw a similar accident happen to a friend of mine. We were on a biking trip, about eight or nine of us, and we'd been out for the best part of a day and were about one mile away from the camp we were staying at. My friend was a couple of bikes ahead of me and we went down quite a steep hill, for some reason he slipped and skidded into the curb. The bike completely flipped and as he had SPDs he was attached to the thing and ended up in a heap on the grass beside the road. His back wheel was completed written off but fortunately he was fine, just a little shaken up. I've never seen someone get off so lightly from such a horrible accident. I was half expecting the guy to be in intensive care for a week after that.

Lets see about 5 years ago i was in the subway in BOS waiting for my grandfather to by the tokens. I had my hand resting on the turn style for the handicapped people and one guy goes through it and there was no screw in the top door hinge and my finger got pulled into it. I could see my skin coming out of the hinge and my finger was stuck. This stupid mother f*ucker had the nerve to yell "GET YOUR FINGER OUT OF THE HOLE" at me and i said i couldn't. I asked him to close the turn style, he again repeated his previous statement. What a jerk he was! So asked for a band-aid at the security office and the lady said i needed stitches. So i had to get on the train and go back home (about 1 hour). My insurance made me go to my primary care doctor first. Then thy said to go to the hospital to get stitches. I got about 10-15 stitches on my right index finger. My nail had come off and the plastic surgeon said i almost lost the tip of my finger. :O I had to see a plastic surgeon for 6 weeks and a physical therapist. To this day my right index finger and nail are deformed but its not bad.

Recently i had contacted a bad case of poison ivy. My left eye was swollen shut and it was on my face, stomach, and legs. It was the most uncomfortable experience of my life. I was on steroids for 2 weeks and i was out of school for a week.

I bit my lip in half when I flew off a merry-go-round back in the day. It got going so fast, my legs kicked up and I was flying, I let go, did a 360 and landed on my face and bit the lip in half.

I got like 9 stitches in my lip. However, now, you couldn't even tell I had a scar now.

I was playing roller hockey on the street one fine day with some friends. We were playing with one of those crappy red Jofa street-hockey pucks that glide about as well as molasses. A guy wound up and took a slapshot and, to his credit, it was a bad shot... end-over-end. I got hit with the flat side of the puck on the right side of my cheek. My cheek was fine aside from a nasty bruise and a superficial cut, but the impact broke two of my molars at the base and cut my gum for a few stitches. When I got up from the asphalt, blood pouring from my mouth, everyone including my mother thought I was on the road to dentures. I ended up losing two molars, both of which were finally replaced this summer.

Last friday, being the clumsy one I am, I tripped on a street curb and misplaced my foot while coming down... off to the hospital and now I have a tight bandage on my foot, something with the blood vessels on top of my ligaments.

I remember when I was about 15, we had to do long-jump in school, I misplaced my foot as well, heard two loud snapping noised, and next thing I know I had my foot in plaster for 3 weeks... then it were the ligaments itself that weren't doing too well  Smile Quite painfull... and the plaster is just annoying, you can't wash your leg for 3 weeks, you can't scratch when it's itchy...

After breaking my leg (relatively painless due to alcohol), the removal of the external fixator was the most pain I have ever had.

Removing three screws from my tibia using a ratchet spanner, and the pulling out of 4 pins going through my ancle using pliars. I'd never known pain like that before, no anasthetic..!

I needed a brandy after that adventure.

Here's a picture (not of me) of a similar contraption.

Broke my pelvicbone, scratched my face and both of my arms, got a concussion and broke 5 fingers- all in one go.

My horse "dropped me" in full canter when it turned- I bounced off the ground and landed in a bush- a rose bush with very nasty thorns...  Silly

My helmet was split in half, so I was VERY lucky to get off that easily- I almost believed in god that day. I went to Prague 2 days later for the a.net meet, and though I was on crutches, I think I did reasonably well.  Smile

Nothing really serious for me compared to the stuff I've read on here. The worst injury so far has been managing to ripping the palm of my right hand open while trying to climb over a fence. My shoes got stuck while climbing over, so I tried to grab on to the fence with my right hand, lost balance and landed on my a$$ with my hand ripping off the fence. Lost a lot of blood, bu thankfully no muscles were harmed. Second worst would be having a 1-ton europallet dropped on my right toe. No permanent damage, but for a few days the toe looked like a tennis ball size-wise.

I had a bike accident riding to school when I was 14. I skidded along wet grass (couldn't stop) & landed in a creek full of rocks! As I wasn't wearing a helmet, I had massive cuts in my head, luckily no fractures, but I had to be put under a general anasetic to have my head stiched. I then got a staph infection in the hospital, I ended up staying in hospital for 10 days and another week or so at home before going back to school (one of the nurses told me on leaving that I was bloody lucky, I could have been stuck there for months...)

I always wear a helmet when I ride my bike now..................

I had a pretty similar experience in April. I was going about 35 mph on a road bike down a really steep long hill into Mission Valley, and I sped around a bend in the bike lane and apparently hit some glass because right after I made that turn the front wheel started wobbling uncontrollably. I had two options- 1) fall into the right lane (two driving lanes) and risk being hit by a car coming around the blind turn, or fall to the right, hit the metal barrier and possibly fall 200 feet into the canyon. I didn't actually get to make my decision because the bike had leaned too far in one of its wobbles and I flipped into the street and skidded a good 10 feet down the asphalt on my side. Fortunately the light at the top of the hill had turned red right after I went throug it, so I was the last poerson to go down the hill so the first car came around teh corner as I was getting up, instead of coming around at 40 and taking me with it. I didn't break anything (the ER thought I'd broken some ribs) but I took off a good amount of my shoulder, upper arms, forearm, hands, thigh, knee, and lower leg, and also got really close to my pelvic bone. The bike was more mangled than I was, but thats why you wear helmets  Smile

Mine are pretty lousy compared to some of you guys. I seem to be good at slicing my self open. Ive never had a broken bone or dislocated anything. So far so good!

When i was 7ish i went walking up a hill and i brushed my face against a branch, i walked home and said to mum, im bleeding wheres the bandaids but my parents had to take me to the A&E and get stiches and another 3 mm and i would have sliced the bottom of my nose above my lip!

Then my forehead went smack back into a solid rimu (nz tree) wood fireplace border little to say the wood didnt suffer the injuries i did. Put a dent in my head gave me concussion and a nasty nasty cut.

Put my hand onto a broken window and glass went straight in misssing all the important bits thank god!

Went to Taupo hot springs in NZ and sliped over and put a hole in my leg and then i was screaming and all the lifeguards etc done was put a waterproof bandadge on and told me to go swimming and it will help!! i was away on scout jamboree.
Went to an army medic at the jamboree who couldnt believe they didnt take me to hospital and that i wasnt in pain!

And when i was a baby i sliced my finger open and i have a scar on my middle finger, not sure how it happened.

But i seem to attract cuts and stiches!

Nearly cut my thumb off when I was a kid. My brother and I were sitting on a dock holding a skiff still while our neighbor was sitting in it painting the name on the back of his yacht. A speedboat goes up the creek, and when the wave came to shore, it smashed my thumb between the skiff, and the stringer on the dock. Only thing holding it attached was a small piece of tissue, and skin.

Maybe not brutal but the aftermath continued for a couple of years. . .

So it was my second time skiing. . .I went on a double black diamond downhill at Heavenly. Basically I didn't ski down the slope, I literally rolled down cus the guy in front of me did an emergency stop for some odd reason...and inexperienced me couldn't stop immediately so BAM, I hit the guy, flew into the air, and rolled down half of the hill. The initial pain was alright but I was out of it for 'bout 5 minutes. I only had a scar on top of my left eye and just a small river of blood on the snow (eww...). The scar required some stitches...how many, I forget. The most painful part was that my tail bone was not aligned so I couldn't bend my back for the next 2 years until I went to a chiropractor in Taiwan. It was very painful. . .

I have been pretty lucky so far. I have had my torn ligaments in my hand and ankle and my broken nose from Baseball or broken arm from riding a bike but nothing to bad.
But when I was three years old I stuck my right pinky in a Huge door and it slammed on the pinky, luck has it a paramedic is in the waiting room of the chiropractor my father was visiting, so he bandage me up and tells my parents to go to the nearest ER. There I get emergency reconstructive surgery on my pinky it is just about completely normal these day just a very small part missing and a little scar. If it was not for the paramedic my parents say I would be missing half my pinky since part of it was dangling by the tissue.

Well, I have not had an injury as bad as most on this thread... When I was ten, I was whittling away at a piece of wood with a brand new Swiss Army knife (I had just got it a week ago on my birthday), when, (remember, I was ten, and very smart yet) I brought the blade back towards me, and managed to slice into my left thumb deep enough to gouge the bone. The resulting cut went from my thumb nail down the length of the thumb and onto the base of the palm of my hand. I remember that it hurt like hell. My mom rushed me to the ER (We were in Florida on vacation for a month at the time) and I had to get eight stiches, as well as I had to endure the doctor probing the wound to make sure there were no bone fragments that broke off when the blade hit the bone. I was bummed out because I could no longer go swimming at the beach...

A couple years ago I was riding my bicycle up by Saylorville lake and got lost in a campground. Going downhill into a parking lot I figured I would do a wide sweeper and save some momentum. My tires were kinda old and hard Mavics, and I ran over a gap in the asphalt and down I went. I remember thinking "This is going to fucking hurt" and I landed on my head and shoulder. Had I not been wearing a helmet I'm quite sure I would have taken a really bad shot and my ear would have gotten scraped off. I crawled off the parking lot and started checking things. My fingers still worked but I couldn't raise my arm.

I carry a first aid kit so I sort of patched myself up and said "now where am I?" I had to push my bike about two miles to get to a boat landing where there were a couple park rangers. My wife came and got me and I went to get the asphalt rash patched up, and it was discovered a couple days later that I'd broken my shoulderblade all the way across.

It took about three months of PT to get the movement back in my arm and I've got some interesting scars. Bob Roll says "Forget the tribal barb wire tattoos on the biceps. What impresses chicks is scar tissue."

yep....thank goodness for percodan and beer. The breakfast of champions.

My cousin Steve crashed his motorcycle a few years back. He lives in France, and he was riding in the beginning of a rainstorm when the road's real greasy. He went down, and hit his head on the pavement. The helmet flew off and he hit his head on the pavement again according to a guy in a Citroen who was following him.

It took him six months to come out of the fog, learn to talk again and remember who he was...a tough thing for a musician.

I think this one wins (so far - let's hope nothing beats it  wideeyed  ).

When I was about 13, I jumped on the bumper of a friend's station wagon. Dude took off from the gravel and then across the paved parking lot. I didn't hold on long, and soon went horizontal and did a Pete Rose through nearly a foot of asphalt, I'd say. It ripped up my elbow and knee and bled a lot, but I dealt with it. Dad didn't do so well when he saw it, though.

I once slipped on a very wet and freshly mopped floor in Kindergarten. The result was six stiches on my head plus probably a mild concussion.

The other most serious injury I've had was from high school. We were messing around with the chairs in our classroom and all of a sudden, I twisted my right foot so much that I must have overstressed a ligament in my ankle. My right foot had to be taped for weeks.

brain injury from being hit by a stolen which caused a large midline shift and permanent damage to my vestibular and balance mechanisms. Was in ICU for 3 weeks and spent 2 years in the head injury rehabilitation here in Perth, the rehab comprised of physio to learn how to walk again, neurological physio to learn how to balance myself & psychological treatment to assit in panic attacks and the fear of being in cars, I lost nearly 20+ kgs due to not being able to eat properly because of my balance problems. To this day I'm extremely frightened of being driven by friends who have lead foot syndrome..it scares the absolute shit out of me.

The white shadows in the MRI of my brain are the haemorrhages forming on my brain within 1hr of the accident...within 4 hours they were twice the size and had moved the brain significantly to the point where I needed an urgent operation to relieve the pressure. One of the strange side effects was the "electric shocks" I'd suffer after the operation...the brain doesn't like being disturbed and on quite a few occasions I'd have these jolts which were like the force when a car slams on its brakes...very weird sensation! To this day I still suffer from a sense of bad balance, when I walk its with the constant feeling of being on a boat in rough seas or on a suspension bridge that's being shaken by strong winds..you wouldn't know it to look at me...but its constantly there!

14 stiches in my head due to being partially scalped by a metal garage door that decided to shut on my head as i walked through into my garage.

Permanent dent in my skull from twatting myself with the blunt end of an ice-axe whilst being silly.

Which explains several things . . . . not the least of which is why you we ducking into the floorboard of the BAFDT when you came to Alaska . . . .  duck  wink
. . . . .

I can list a stab wound to the back, stab wound to the right thigh, many stitches to the head, wrecked ligaments in the right ankle, broken hand, broken clavical . . . . that's about it.

now you know! I very rarely let me mates drive me around in their hotted up cars because they don't understand what its like to go through something as traumatic as that...I remember about 2 years ago a mate was driving us home and taking an S bend at quite high speed...I had to open the door and threaten to jump out to get him to slow down!

in other news...look out for a 21 jan arrival!

Good thing is, the difference between a hotted up car and the BAFDT: If I hit something you may not know it. LOL
