Anyone With An External Hard Drive?

Thu May 17, 2007 4:02 am

I just bought one, that worked on my home system, but does not work when I hook it up to my laptop. Right now I am trying to see if the right driver is being loaded when it is plugged in. The one that is being loaded on my system is USBSTOR.SYS. I am not home right now to see what driver is being used on the home system, and all I could find on google is that USBSTOR.SYS is a driver that has something to do with digital cameras.

Check the manufacturer's website... often times they'll have the drivers there, in case XP got screwed up. Assuming you're on XP? If its Win98 or older, then, you'll definitely need to look for a driver for it.

I'm guessing both systems are Win XP?

Well, unless you were planning on starting another "Hot Girls '07" thr - oh, wait. Never mind.

The first thing you want to establish is whether Windows is recognizing the drive or not, on any level. From the Start menu, right-click on My Computer and click "Manage". From the left pane, click on "Disk Management" and look for your external drive. If it's not there, it's probably a problem with the enclosure.

Apart from the usual Windows USB riff-raff, you shouldn't need any fancy drivers to use your external disk.

EDIT: I'm also assuming that both machines are XP. If not, the riff-raff will not suffice!  biggrin

Both machines are XP. When I first plug the hard drive in, it recognizes the drive, and then a little bit later, the message that something went wrong while trying to install the device comes up. I check the device manager and it says that "This device cannot start. Code 10" Searching for that string on google, I havn't really found anything meaning, which is why I am led to believe that the wrong driver may have possibly been loaded. I checked the manufacturers web site, and they say that Windows should load the proper driver by itself. If USBSTOR.SYS is the proper driver, then maybe mine is corrupt.

what make is the drive?

It might be a problem with the USB driver on your computer, maybe see if theres an update for that.

It's a Maxtor 500 gig 3100 or something like that. I've tried updating the driver thru the device manager, but it finds that the one it's using is the best.

Could it be a USB 2.0 drive plugged into a USB 1.0 laptop?

The laptop is only a few months old, it even has ExpressCard, so I imagine it's 2.0. When I connect Flash Cards, cameras, etc, they aren't 1.0 slow. It was a cheap drive, so I guess it's going back to Best Buy on Saturday when I get home - if it doesn't work on my home system again. I tried it on my DVD player (has a USB connection for flash drives, etc) it worked Saturday when I hooked it up, but now it doesn't. I guess it did take a dump.

Facing XP USB problems, I do this:

--from Control Panel - remove (not disable) all the USB system drivers and USB root hubs.
--unplug all USB devices, (press the "Windows key" and use the down-arrow to navigate to "shutdown", if you had an USB mouse).
--after reboot, the old USB system devices will be re-recognised and the drivers loaded.
-- then, take one of your external USB devices, and plug it into all the available USB ports, and verify that each time the message "your hardware is now ready for use" appears. (May take a longish time in some cases).
--repeat the last step for all your external USB devices.

USB sucks anyway. Get an external drive with a Firewire interface and put a Firewire adapter on each of your computers. It's well worth it and your throughput will be much higher.

Already set up for firewire. I got the USB version as it connects to my DVD player, so I have the option on where I watch certain files. Since it doesn't work on that now, I'll trade it in on the version that has both USB and firewire.

Yep. For some reason the computer is unable to get the driver going for it.

Did you by any chance do my trick (#8)? The initial path is: Start - Control Panel - System - Hardware -Device Manager.
There's a body of practical experience behind that procedure ..

My external worked on Windows 2000 like a charm and has happily accepted a change to XP, also useful for the Laptop in XP. The thing it does not like, being NTFS, is talking to my ME machines, partly because they are FAT32 but I suspect externals might be a bit beyond ME. Never bothered with Firewire, USB2 is just fine and dandy.

eyepopping  An external hard drive, of anyone or me?  eek

Since I was born I have my built-in hard drive, which still works pretty fine.

Yep tried that before I even posted. Removed everything under the USB section, and rebooted. All of the IRQs I had set up had to be reset - GPS, Air Card, SD card reader, etc, too many conflicts. I think the drive is done, after only a few days. I'll try it on my home system where it worked perfectly when I get home tomorrow, but if it doesn't work, I'll be getting a better quality one.

I've seen a number of external drives having blown their USB/FW to ATA drive electronics, while the drive itself has remained fine. If it was a Mac drive enclosure, I've been able to restore things by connecting it to the ATA bus of a PC running XP and MacDrive 8 (there's a 5 day free trial on it).

People should be in general aware that an external drive is a fragile piece of hardware. Dropping the drive even from a moderate height while the disk is spinning will almost always lead to a total destruction of the data.

I used to have a somewhat similar problem with my external HD - worked with the desktop, but not with the laptop.

Reason was that XP assigned a wrong drive letter upon connecting the HD, one that was already in use. I had external storage connected earlier, and they were always assigned to drive E:/. However, in the meantime, I had created another partition on my built-in HD (while no external media was connected), and also assigned drive E:/ to it.

Now it seems that XP Disk Management remembers drive letters for external media, and always tries to reassign it when an external device is connected. So when I connected the USB HD, Disk Management assigned drive E:/ to it. But as that was in use already, the USB drive did not show.

I sovled it by:
- right-clicking on "My Computer"
- Manage...
- under "Storage Management", chose "Disk Management"

If your drive is displayed here (AC773 asked that in reply #3, but you did not reply explicitely to this), then right-click it, chose "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." and assign a drive letter that is definitely unused on that computer.

If the drive is not displayed there: do you connect the drive directly to the Laptop, or via a USB switch? If the latter, try to connect it directly. I used to have a memory stick that refused to work when plugged into a USB switch (that otherwise worked fine for all kind of devices, including USB HD), but worked fine when plugged directly to the computer.

Finally: I assume the drive has an external power adapter, right? Meaning, it is not powered via USB supply only, or?

Took the drive back, and the dorks at Nerd Club couldn't even get to work. Traded it on a 1TB external + a $1 or 2. Hopefully this one will last a little longer.
