What Car Did You Learn To Drive On?

Fri May 18, 2007 1:35 am

First off, the idea for this thread was shamelessly stolen from Kieron747 in the thread: The Car Your Dad Drove When You Were A Kid (by Cornish May 17 2007 in Non Aviation)  silly

Anyway, I learned to drive on a '96 red Ford Explorer which looked pretty much exactly like this one:

I learned to drive in the US, but the car was Canadian and had the speedo in KPH. The MPH was listed, but the numbers were small and vaguely spaced so my speed was always an educated guess. It was a stick-shift, and I also used it for my driver's test.

Given the size and the transmission (which at that time wasn't even working properly), I was pretty damn proud to have parallel parked it on my first go.  biggrin

The driving school car was a Nissan Sunny like this:

While learning, i also drove my mum's Mazda 323 a bit like this:

not long after i passed my test mum changed her car and i got to drive a Citroen BX - complete with funky suspension  Smile

1974 Ford station wagon.

It was a real pisser to learn to parallel park with that thing. But, as a result, now I can parallel park anything on wheels. People are surprised that I can parallel park a huge "box-type" ambulance on the first attempt.  Big grin

The driver ed car at the high school was a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda, not the type of family sedan one associates with drivers education.
Learned to drive at home on the 1968 International Travelall and 1966 Datsun Pickup. Wasn't real fond of taking the Datsun on 19th Ave in San Francisco and stopping at a red light going uphill with the 4 speed.

I learned to drive in my family's two cars plus the driver's ed car.

We had a 1987 Toyota Camry and a 1990 Plymouth Acclaim V6. And at school we had brand new Plymouth Breezes.

I learned to drive in a 1986 300zx, which I bought sometime near my 16th birthday. It had an automatic transmission (a sin, I know) so I learned to drive stick in my sister's 1972 BMW 2002 and my mother's 1964 Mercedes 230.

I was really lucky to have learned in those cars. Apart from the horrible clutch on the Merc, they were all a dream to drive.

When I took Driver's Ed at school, it was a 1980-something Ford Crown Vic that had previously served with the Gwinnett County Police Department (The school system decided to use old county vehicles for the Driver's Ed program instead of letting local car dealers donate vehicles). Real smart, let young inexperienced drivers behind the wheel of a car with a cop motor.

The other car I learned to drive on was a 1982 Buick Regal.

there total rubbish. the automatic gearbox is crap, the ride is too soft, etc... but it served it's purpose.

I also drove a 1996 light willow green ford explorer, with a god awful green interior.

Oh, i forgot. That was also the car that tried to kill me.

I learned how to drive my parent's1999 Mercury Villager. But I took my test in a 1996 Honda Civic because the handbrake was on the center console.

Learning on a mini-van was a blessing because it was so easy for me to drive other cars since they were usually all smaller.

When I was 14 in 1980 my Dad tossed me the keys, and shop manual, to the '73 Capri 2600 V-6 that was parked in front of the house. Going over that car from front to rear, and making it run as good as new, I literally built my car before I drove it - a habit I carry to today, learn how the machine works before operating it.

Thanks!

As I mentioned in the other thread, I learnt to drive in this kind of POS.

I had about 15 lessons when i turned 17, and then took my test in 7 July 1994. I passed first time.

I was then free to drive around my own car, a 1977 Mini Clubman, like this one but in red.

It was a great car, but pretty rusty. It always slipped out of 2nd gear and I had to adjust the drum brakes on a weekly basis. When it rained it was like a swimming pool inside, I used to keep dessicant under the floor mats. I loved it though, and I was the only one who could start the damn thing. It required a very delicate combination of choke and accelerator, a quick burst on the ignition key followed by a longer one to start the engine. No one else could do it.

The driver's window didn't go down, it leaked oil and the passenger door was knackered, but I loved that car.

After passing my exam, I bought my first car, a Peugeot 205. After 3 months a bought a brand new Renault Clio. Once that Clio reached the 100.000km, I switched to a Volkswagen Golf, of which I had 3 different onces. Currently I have an Audi A3 TDI Sportback. Nice car, my next car will probably be an Audi again (the new A5 !!!!  Cool  bigthumbsup  )

That's all I could afford working part-time at a Taco Bell.
The car was in great shape but would over heat and would stall if I took a corner too fast.
My other choices at the time was a 1973 VW Bug or a 1979 Cheverolet Caprice Classic that was totally beat up for $300.
The Pinto was the best buy at the time. It ran on regular leaded gasoline and in summer 1990, gas was only 88 cents a gallon.
