The Best Comedy Movies Of All Time

Fri May 18, 2007 1:36 pm

Hey guys,

This morning I had just tuned into one of our local radio shows and they where discussing a list of the ten greatest comedy films of all time. And they where pretty much tearing up the list as an example of pop culture trying to self-promote itself. They had South Park, Bigger Longer Uncut in the number 7 position and a bunch of teenie movies. Probably the most agregious part of this list was the fact that not a single Mel Brooks film in the top 10 list....but Nurse Betty made it.

So I figured that much as I had done over in military aviation when we had the top ten bomber or fighter thread I would put up a thread of the top ten greatest comedies of all times.

So anyway here is my list of what the top 10 comedy films of all time should look like.

The Big Lebowski-
A Fish Called Wanda
Life of Brian
Blazing Saddles
Raising Arizona
Animal House
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Airplane
Stripes
CaddyShack

Edit:Honorable Mentions-Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb and Mr. Roberts.

Feel free to wail on my picks.

I'm not sure there should be more than one Mel Brooks movie in the top 10, but if we were to pick 2 I'd say it would have to be "Young Frankenstein" followed by "Blazing Saddles". With the first one really being more of a product of Gene Wilder's mind than it was Mel Brooks.... both are probably the best movies Brooks made, but are very different.

And while it isn't a pure comedy I think that the entire Shrek series needs to be considered.

The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming
What's up Doc? (my first PG movie - 1972)

A bit dark, but with some good comedic moments:

Catch-22

And as much as I dislike Adam Sandler at times:

As a Brady Bunch fan, I have to pick the first Brady Bunch movie (1995) as my favorite comedy. I laughed so hard at the movies when I first saw it. I own the DVD.

I'm ashamed to say I almost did.  blush

For those who've never seen it, it is shameless slapstick featuring all the major TV stars of the 1950s and Ethyl Merman portraying the "bitchy mother-in-law" by which all others shall be judged.

I own the movie, but TBH I have never been able to sit through the entire thing. For one it is long for a comedy, it comes in around 2 and a half hours. The pacing is also noticeably slower than a modern comedy, but I guess that could be part of the charm. But it is an interesting flick to watch, even just for all those wonderful classic cars in the first half of the movie.

Can't fault that, if you are talking comedy then you need to include Peter Sellers.

How about adding:

The Jerk
National Lampoon's Vacation (I know somebody already mentioned it above)
Fletch
Beverly Hills Cop
Trading Places
Planes Trains and Automobiles

I've used Flounder's "Can I have 10,000 marbles please?" line as a signature in the past. Maybe I ought to use the "Fat, drunk and stupid" line in a future signature line.

David St. Hubbins: I do not, for one, think that the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem *may* have been, that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being *crushed* by a *dwarf*. Alright? That tended to understate the hugeness of the object.

David St. Hubbins: Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported.

Ian Faith: The Boston gig has been cancelled...
David St. Hubbins: What?
Ian Faith: Yeah. I wouldn't worry about it though, it's not a big college town.

And of course, my favorite lines from the entire movie:

Ian Faith: They're not gonna release the album... because they have decided that the cover is sexist.
Nigel Tufnel: Well, so what? What's wrong with bein' sexy? I mean there's no...
Ian Faith: Sex-IST!
David St. Hubbins: IST!

Blazing Saddles
Top Secret
My Cousin Vinny
Silent Movie

The Big Bus...came out before Airplane! and not real well known..takes place on a nuclear powered bus that travels
non stop from LA to Chicago. Some great stuff in that movie. Many years ago a friend and I used to be able
to quote much of the movie, much like many of us with Airplane! today. A great cast..not even sure if it's still in
print.

In addition to some of the fabulous comedies mentioned (Caddyshack, Airplane, Blazing Saddles, Slap Shot, et al), I would like to submit a recent movie for the committee: Grandma's Boy. I don't even smoke pot and I found that movie to be off the charts funny.

Another honorable mention: UHF. From 1988 I believe, starred Wierd Al Yankovic and Michael "Kramer" "racist" Richards as Stanley Spidowski, a legendary character even if he didn't do Kramer. Very underrated overall.

I must watch "The Big Lebowski"; never saw that one!

My own favourites:

Life of Brian (everyone has movies they know off by heart; this is one of mine)
Airplane! (likewise; I quote it almost every day - I have a colleague at work called Shirley)
The Holy Grail
Duck Soup (Marx Bros)
At the Circus (Marx Bros)
Blazing Saddles ("Ditto"? Ditto? You provincial putz!)
