Canadian Myth?: Victoria Day "Summer" Weekend

Sun May 20, 2007 9:52 pm

There was an interesting article in the Peterborough Examiner on Friday, discussing our history of crappy weather on the Victoria Day long weekend.

For a long weekend that is supposed to signal the start of the "summer" long weekends, the weather has not been very good, very often. Today, here in the Canadian tropics at 43°N, we are having a cool, windy Sunday after a wet Saturday. I can see smoke coming out of the chimney of the house across the street.

Maybe we ought to move the holiday into June?

No, but we can add a June holiday.  Wink

And while we're at it, lets add one in February.  thumbsup

Yesterdays weather was nice, got some stuff done around the house which was nice. Today is a little different near YYZ, cooler and drizzle, lets hope this disappears.

It's still nice to be home and not at work.

Yeah, the weather hasn't been co-operating. In fact we had snow just yesterday, and the temperatures dropped below freezing during the evening and with the wind chill....

After a week of hitting the 30 degree mark, it was nice to have a bit cooler of a day on Saturday. Not much cooler, but the wind did not make the temperature as noticiable.

 yes

Don't know about the rest of the country, but summer life always kicks off in May around here. The beaches are already getting full, the lakes are filling up with boats and waterskiers and camping grounds are booked.

Here in YYC we usually don't get consistent summer weather until about...mid-June. This year is much like last year: good April/May, crappy May Long Weekend, below-normal temperatures for the rest of May and early June, then it'll recover by June 15-16.

Cheers,

Saturday in Pembroke was sunny & +23. Not too far from Peterborough. Maybe you should sacrifice a virgin if you can find one. Today kind of sucks, but supposed to be sunny & +20 tomorrow.

Basic fact is all across Canada, April-May weather has a lot of variability. I can remember snow in Winnipeg AFTER the may long weekend, for example. I can also remember golfing the 2nd week of April in short sleeves.

This is Canada, get used to it.

Yes well thats nothing, growing up in Northern Ontario:

Snow on Canada Day (and i mean blizzard)
Short sleeves December 24th (+18C)
Snow then +20 in 6 hours (in May)

Anyways, Vic Day/May 24 is supposed to be the "Cottage Season" kickoff, for which it works nicely. Now maybe we could get a vacation in June... I really don't see what the problem is anyways, Monday was just about right here in Tdot.
