New Baghdad Palace?

Mon May 21, 2007 2:32 am

Too bad the hundreds of unoccupied FEMA trailers couldn't be put to good use.

U.S. Embassy in Iraq to be biggest ever

WASHINGTON (AP) — The new U.S. Embassy in Baghdad will be the world's largest and most expensive foreign mission, though it may not be large enough or secure enough to cope with the chaos in Iraq.

The $592 million embassy occupies a chunk of prime real estate two-thirds the size of Washington's National Mall, with desk space for about 1,000 people behind high, blast-resistant walls. The compound is a symbol both of how much the United States has invested in Iraq and how the circumstances of its involvement are changing.

Yet another FLAGRANT example of how little this administration regards the American people. As a fiscal CONSERVATIVE; I am YET AGAIN disgusted.

Hmmm, all said and done, adjusted for inflation, the Embassy in Moscow exceeded $600,000,000 in today's dollars:

What cost $385000000 in 1990 would cost $603734941.65 in 2006

Embassy in Moscow

Good counterpoint, but can you look me straight in the face and tell me the one in Baghdad will be around as long?

Yeah, I'll hop the first plane to MIA  wink  or catch you in BHM in Oct.

It'll be around as long.

TedT, we will maintain a diplomatic mission in Iraq for the foreseeable future.

Is that the one that was so full of bugs that we abandoned it before it was complete?

I have to disagree with ANC on this one. Spending a huge sum of money on an embassy in a nation that was our number one enemy and a world power I can understand. Keep in mind that embassy's main function is to spy on the nation they are in. To spend that amount of money for an embassy in Iraq does not make sense to me. The only reason I can see for such an expenditure is to try and legitimate Bush W's folly.

I appreciate the sentiment, howver, the premise of the thread is "the most expsive embassy ever" . That's not true. Don't care how it's sliced.
