WJforLife Is Going In For Surgery Soon...

Mon May 21, 2007 6:05 am

Hi, everyone.

Just thought I'd post a thread on my upcoming eye surgery and just say it's going to be a little scary for me.

I have had a condition called searching nystagmus for about 15 years now. It's a condition where my left eye likes to wander off into the socket, causing a 'googley-eyes' effect. It's been the butt of many jokes and harassment for the past 15-16 years, and now that I am finally getting it done, it feels as if it's like a change is in progress. It may not be as significant as plastic surgery, but it's going to change the way I look and feel about myself.

To be honest, going in for this scares me, because one: I have this small fear of not waking up from the anesthetic and two, I am afraid the surgery won't go over as I had planned (EG: a muscle may snap or it won't fit up correctly).

I thank you for reading this, and I hope you're all doing fine.

Thanks in advance for reading,
Nik

PS: I'll post a couple pictures of myself later to show the nystagmus. After the surgery is done on May 24, I'll post the surgery results on here too.
I need a drink.

I had it done when I was little. Like 2 mos. little. Just a quick snip of the muscle and you're done. It is cool though that I can make that eye wander off when I want.

We'll be pulling for you, I'm quite sure . . . .

My cousin Judy had the same surgery and it was resoundingly successful . . . .

I'm quite sure your doctors will be the best and you'll be just fine . . .

Yeah, ANC. I'll probably be dead from the anesthetic for a day or so, then I'll be back on my feet by the 25th/26th at the latest.

Thanks already for everything, guys.

I had the same surgery way back when I was a kid.. If I could "survive" it way back in the pre-historic early 1960s, you'll do just fine. Fret not....

Maybe you'll get a laugh out of this...

About 5 years ago, I had a cataract removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant. They put me under, but at one point during the procedure, I recall feeling tugging/pressure (no pain) and the anesthesiologist making some really snide comment about something I was/wasn't doing (while supposedly under anesthesia) and I remember saying "that's because I'm still awake you stupid asshole.." and that's the last thing I remember. On my follow-up office visit, my opthamologist told me that she and nurses almost burst out laughing when I'd said that (turns out the guy really was an asshole), and she had him turn the knob a little more so I went back under. She used a different anesthesiologist when I had the other eye done about a month later....

Big version: Width: 2816 Height: 2112 File size: 1499kb

This is the picture of my eyes, pre-operation. Notice the left eye's tendency to 'rise' upward into the socket. They are pulling the left eye down and tightening the muscle below to make the eye straighten forward and reduce/eliminate the "googley-eyes" effect.

To reduce glare, I removed my eyeglasses required for seeing (I have no natural lenses in my eyes and require prescription lenses to see).

I had the same surgery when I was little. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I had it done again in the 4th grade, and it helped a little. Now, in the 9th grade, I have pretty straight eyes most of the time, except when I wake up in the morning. My right eye is the problem eye and it goes towards the nose. I am alright with it. Don't worry if the surgery doesn't work, the eye will continue to get stronger.

I have had surgury like this for the past 8years and nothing has gone wrong. No worries as Queso said above. Were all here for you.

Best of luck,

Good luck with the operation.

I had a cataract removal a few years ago; I didn't feel a thing. Went to sleep woke up in a different room a hour or so later.

Update on the surgery as of May 24, 2007:

The surgery was a success. Left eye nystagmus corrected to the point where my left eye is now as functional and straight as right eye.

Surgeons did a good job, and I get a follow-up tomorrow (May 25) on the surgery.

Still a bit woozy from the anesthetic, but I took it quite well. I'm quite happy with the results.

Cheers,
Nik

Is that an order, ANC? Or are you just egging me along.

I'll get some rest in a bit, don't worry. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Greatly appreciated.  Smile

Not anymore. Time for me to take a rest.

Hope you're all doing well and I thank you all for your compassion and acceptance through this time. I have overcome a hurdle that has burdened me for 17 years...now all I need to do is talk to the eye doctor about getting contact lenses, and who knows? I may be flying for WS or AC in NO time flat!

Cheers from Calgary,

My left eye has improved my 3D vision about 75-100%. My peripheral vision is much better and I have better depth perception now (when my eye was in its original state, I couldn't catch a ball that well).

Basically, this surgery turned me around...a lot.
