Pop Tarts, What Are They Worth?

Tue May 22, 2007 7:16 am

In that old thread about German food: German Food! (by Alitalia777 Apr 24 2007 in Non Aviation) Alitalia777 asked if he could get Pop Tarts in Germany. Much to my amusement, I found them on the shelf at the grocer today and I wondered whether trying them is worth the insane €5,59 they want for a 416g (14.7 oz or so) package. Any opinions?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, you found them here in Germany?  Wow! Awesome, I thought that Kellog's stopped to sell them here.

Wucher! I remember that a pack of them cost approx. 3 Marks some years ago.

Anyway, I would even buy them for the actual price, I love the stuff, it was always part of my breakfast when I lived in the US of A.

PopTarts should come with a set of dentures and a syringe of insulin. In that case, they might just be worth the price.

I normally eat them for breakfast when I don't have enough time eat waffles or cereal or other stuff like that since you can just grab them and hop in the car to go to work or school or wherever else you have to go and eat them on the way. I also eat them for a snack if I'm hungry in the middle of the day. Hope that helps!

Marktkauf Mannheim, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 100 (or very similar), one Stadtbahn stop from the... err... well, US barracks. And the good thing is you certainly don't need a US Military ID to get in! Want me to mail you some? They have "Strawberry" and "Smores". There's actually a modest range of products, from barbecue sauce to Marshmallow Fluff to muffin mix.

Not for that much! That's $7.52USD per 10-ct. box (which is normal size). There will be a difference between US and German prices, but expensive stores in the US will sell that box for $5.50 (4.08 Euro). You can get them at a real grocery store for about $4 (2.97 Euro). That is a large price difference and IMO not worth it.

Mini Mal used to sell them, they had a whole US section with various cereals, pops, cookies and other goodies from the US. I can't remember what I paid for them though. If I still lived there, I'd still buy them, even for the price you found them for, somethings you just gotta have. You should be able to get Kraft Dinner as well, but last time I bought it there it already cost €3 .....  Wow!

My cousin and I are like this. Everytime I fly over there, I bring him the usual Kraft Dinner, Halls, Tim Horton's coffee etc. and I return with erdnuss flips, Knorr Fix fuer Spaghetti Bolognese, Haribo etc. Then when he comes to visit, it's the same vice versa.

As for my friend in MIA, unfortunately doesn't he have the slightest clue when he can take a few days off. He was just sent there by his company and has a shitload of work. We hope to see us in September or October, but it can easily be November or even December.

Will do. Will have to do it on a weekend for sure, since I'll only be needing to take the S-Bahn to MH this time, I'm planning on having to stumble my way home ....

I'm also planning on going to Athens for a couple of days while I'm there, so I'll be booking my Trans Atlantic flight around the dates I find (a decent fare with AB) to ATH, but it'll be mid to late October for sure.

By the way: You are only allowed to bring stuff for approx. 200 EUR to Germany, you have to pay tax when you come back to Germany with goods amounting to over 200 EUR. So when you buy clothes in the USA make them look used. You should definitely remove all price lables and you should trow the receipts into the trash (make a small handwritten list when you want to keep an overview of you spendings and put it in your wallet, but do never keep the receipts!). Young people who arrive from the USA are always interesting for the custom guys because most of them buy tons of clothes in the USA, especially at the moment because the USD is weak compared to the EUR.

Yeah, I found out about that when I looked up Mac Book prices. Not that I could afford one, and at first I forgot I'd have to add sales tax to the list price anyway, but it was an interesting comparison anyway.

I think it'd be a bit difficult for them to single me out - I'll be accompanying a group of God-knows-how-many (20? 50?) young people, all with loads of overweight baggage and all much too concerned with getting to their families behind the "arrivals" doors to stop for a puny customs officer.  Silly

Not always. There are a few non-tax states, like here in Oregon, and you can avoid sales tax by ordering from a dealer in another state and having it delivered to your hotel (if the dealer doesn't have a presence in that state).

Hmmm...  scratchchin  I have to check some iPod prices, to see which of them are below the customs allowance. Although I'm not quite sure if the postage would eat up the sales tax advantage.

Yeah, I found out about that when I looked up Mac Book prices. Not that I could afford one, and at first I forgot I'd have to add sales tax to the list price anyway, but it was an interesting comparison anyway.

Reminds me of a notebook which I bought in Singapore some years ago. I had the thing in my trolley while my girlfriend had all the CDs and instruction manuals in her trolley. We went separately through the custom controls but nobody of us got stopped... way too much action for nothing.  Silly

Why people eat pop tarts is beyond me. They are just a block of sugar! If you're gonna be bad at least eat tastier deserts.

You can get them at a real grocery store for about $4 (2.97 Euro).

Do you at least get a kiss?

Quoting AeroWesty (Reply 9):
$2.50 at my local Safeway. (Not that I would eat them, mind you.)

I was gonna say, 4 bucks??????

is a box of Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts.

The chocolate ones are good to, but the best is GRAPE, and you can hardly ever find them.

Carbs and sugar. Very fattening if you ask me.

Sometimes you just have to eat what tastes good! Try it, you will probably like it!

Thanks! I haven't really got any fixed plans, so maybe I'll make a short trip to Delaware or New Hampshire and make some extra use of it.
