Which Jeep Models Will Go Bye-bye?

Thu May 24, 2007 6:31 am

I was listening to the "Wall Street Journal This Morning" while getting ready for work and was intrigued by a story concerning Chrysler's future after the buyout by Cererbus. The jist of the story was which models will survive and which will cease production. The story started off with the Jeep line, as pointed out Jeep has some 7 models and some are no doubt slated to become extinct. The analyst being interviewed would not speculate as to which models he believed were to face the axe, but I got a bad vibe that my beloved Wrangler line may no be too long for this world. I have been an avid Jeep lover ever since I was a kid when I acquired my Grandfather's 1962 CJ after getting my driver's license in the 70s. While I have owned other cars over the years, somehow a Jeep wound up in my driveway. I will be purchasing an Unlimited in the Fall, continuing the tradition, however I wonder if my Wrangler (or the '08' production line) will soon be relegated to the history books.

Personally I hope those Jeeps (in name only, imo), the Patriot, Compass and Liberty are slashed. Frankly, I can not see Jeep (Chrysler/Cerebus) ceasing the production the one Jeep model that screams JEEP, that has a direct lineage to the Bantam and Willys and such a proud history.

Time will tell,

Thomas

Only the Wrangler should remain.

Jeep needs to get back to it's roots and stop trying to make SUVs for pussies.

Doesn't matter.

Hasn't been a "real" Jeep since Chrysler started building them . . .

Rubicon was close, but how do you take a nicely painted vehicle bouldering? The real issue I have with it is it is ready made and part of the experience is building and repairing your own cj...but it is pretty nice and kept up with us just fine.

The Wrangler is one of the most popular models. Infact it's one of the few examples in the Chrysler lineup where demand outstrips supply.

Assuming there will be a cut, I can see the Commander and the Patriot being cut. If not the Patriot the Compass as neither have the brand recognition of the Liberty.

I dont think the Liberty/Cherokee (Europe) will be cut. This model has some good success (especially overseas with the 2.8L CRD).

On a sidenote the Jeep Patriot and Commander are jokes.

I just bought a new Jeep Wrangler and people always compare it to the H3. I didnn't see it until I parked right next to one and I could hardly tell them apart - mine is black with the black hard top. I think the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee line will remain, and possibly the Liberty, but all those other ones are toast.

I think that Jeep ought to focus on the following models:

Wrangler
Liberty
Grand Cherokee

Let the Compass and Patriot die as Jeep models and let one of those models live on as a Dodge model since the Compass and Patriot are based off of the Caliber platform

I would also drop the Liberty name and make the Cherokee name standard across the board.

I'd ditch the Commander completely, as it does compete to an extent with the new Chrysler Aspen. Or perhaps offer is as trim level for the Grand Cherokee.

I'd leave the Wrangler lineup as it currently stands. While the Wrangler Unlimited has been a bit of a controversial model for Jeep purists, it seems to be quite a popular model.

My next vehicle will definitely be another product of the Chrysler Group, more than likely a Jeep Wrangler.

It will stay. The day we see Wrangler cut is the day Jeep disappears

I am a "Jeep guy" and have owned the Wrangler and currently own a Liberty. The Wrangler isn't going anywhere unless management does something totally moronic and cancels it. The Wrangler is the most popular and most recognizable of the Jeep products. The Liberty is too popular to be cut. The Grand Cherokee will probably get the axe and have the Commander replace it. The Grand Cherokee is long in tooth where as the Commander is new and they both compete for the same market share. Given the choice between the two, management will probably cut the Grand Cherokee because Jeep just invested in new tooling for the Commander and will need to see it's investment pay off. I personally hate the commander because I think it looks like a cheap copy of the Hummer. As for the Compass, its not going anywhere due to the same reason as the Commander, new tooling.
It's not a near miss it's a near hit!!

Nitro and the Liberty share the same platform. In fact, some of the styling on the Nitro will be seen in the 2008 Liberty.

Liberty and Wrangler will stay. The Patriot will stay as its lines are similar to the Cherokee. The Commander has a good chance.

Agreed 100%!
The abysmally low ground clearance of the Liberty, (current) Grand Cherokee, and Commander make them virtually worthless off-road unless you're willing to install a lift kit, a job made much more difficult by these model's independent front suspensions. Real Jeeps should be able to handle the Rubicon Trail right off the dealer's showroom floor, and for many years that was the standard to which they were held.

I say ax the ultra-wussy Compass, put either a live axle or an IFS with decent ground clearance under the Liberty, Grand Cherokee, and Commander, and make the Patriot a Dodge by swapping it's seven slot grill for one with a giant set of chrome crosshairs.

Actually, forcing everyone involved in designing Jeeps to take the Rod Hall Off-Road Driving Course in the current Jeep lineup should give them some idea what they're supposed to be doing back at the office.

At least Chrysler made an effort to undo some of the things that AMC screwed up while they owned the brand.

Agreed. I think they should keep/bring back the classic linup:

CJ - for the off-road lovers
Grand Wagoneer - Tahoe-sized SUV
Grand Cherokee - Smaller sized but fully loaded.
A few stripped-down versions for pricing...

And that's it. 3 good models. All you need...

And while they are at it, Chrysler could revive the Plymouth Valiant/Dodge Dart.
Other carmakers could jump on this bandwaggon as well.

VW - Give us back the REAL rear-engine Beetle.
Chevrolet - The Nova II.
Ford - Of course, the model T.
Rover - Spite BMW and restart production of the classic Mini, complete with rubber-block suspension, lower-edge hinged bootlid, and 10-inch rims.

I did not mean bring the actual old models back. Just the names, which have a certain heritage, and models that are faithful to that heritage.

Glad to see that most believe that the Wrangler will stay, hopefully the powers that be will see it this as well when the axe falls.

There is one model of Jeep alongside the Wrangler that I loved almost as much, and that is the now discontinued Cherokee. This was arguably the world's first SUV when it appeared in the form of the Wagoneer in the 60s or even further back to the original Jeep wagon in the late 40s. This utilitarian, go-anywhere (as long as you had the 4wd version) wagon had a fairly strong following (I owned 2 over the years) and complimented the Wrangler very nicely, I was heartbroken when I heard then that Jeep would discontinue the model in '01', replacing it with the Liberty. I suppose there was an attempt to revise the spirit of the Cherokee in the form of the overpriced and bloated Commander (looks like it's on steroids) last year. Sadly it simply did not have that old Cherokee feel.

Which, of course, was essentially a Concord with a modified Jeep drivetrain when it came out.

The Compass is a nice vehicle, but I wouldn't call it a Jeep. Make it a Dodge model.

Keep the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and the Liberty. The Patriot and Commander seem redundant.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.
