There Is Still Slavery In The US

Thu May 24, 2007 11:04 am

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - A millionaire couple accused of keeping two Indonesian women as slaves in their luxurious Long Island home and abusing them for years have been indicted on federal slavery charges.

This is so sick, especially in a country that was so adamant to get rid of slavery years ago.

Six or seven years ago there was a story in the Detroit Free Press about a African husband and wife,I believe they were Nigerian, who had a 14 year old, who did not speak english and was also African, enslaved at their home for two plus years. She was a sex slave and did domestic duties. It was a big deal at the time. It was in the paper for several days and was in the paper later when the trial of the couple was going on. The couple was found guilty of several different crimes. I don't recall what happened with the girl.

There is still slavery throughout the world. In the early 2000s the UN was trying to focus on eliminating slavery, but since then other issues have got in the way. I have no idea what the UN is doing about it now.

On some level there is probably some slavery going on in most countries. Some people will always try to prey on the weak regardless of the law or morality.

Disgusting really... and even more if you think that these people actually often have the money to pay a decent salary, but prefer not to do out of greed...

Apparently overhere it happens quite a lot in Brussels, with all its international institutions and tons of diplomats. Some diplomats and ambassadors are apparently keeping "house slaves", often coming from their own home country. These modern slaves can't get off the premises to tell their story. And even if they do get out and go to the police, the cops can't do much, as they are stopped by the fact that alot of those diplomats have immunity. The only thing you can do is cause a big enough uproar in the medio, so that the diplomat gets called back.

Cases like this one are far too common in the USA. Many thousands of people from countries throughout the world who come to the USA desperate to leave obscenely poor lives in their home countries have ended up facing dangerous and horrible enslavement conditions to pay for their passage to the USA. They may be recruited by criminal gangs with connections in both the home country and the USA looking for cheap help to exploit and to get fees like $30,000 on up to pay for their passage. They may enter the country illegally or on tourist visas then work illegally for many years for businesses owned immoral organized criminals or 'sold' to people like the 'family' in the initial post, to pay back and more for their passage. If they don't pay it, or if caught by ICE agents and arrested, they or their families back home may be forced to pay it. Of course their illegal status makes them easily exploited and willing to do so. They often do not know thier human rights as they are so uneducated or come from countries with few or virtually not human or labor rights.
Situations like this are an area that needs much more attention in the proposed revisions of the Immigration bills in progress in the Senate and Congress. They should including tough and frequent enforcement against expoiters and to better inform those likely to be subject to such exploitation of their rights under our laws and that they are under the responsibility that they cannot work.

Really ? It may happen occasianally but does this happen enough to ammend immigration laws. Would not existing labor laws be adequet?

I haven't heard too much of this although I wouldn't be surprised to find out it happens frequently. I wish I had a live-in maid that charged $100 a month  Wink

Yeah, because one incident done by one couple is representative of the whole country...

Nothing. As usual. Just talking about it at the U.N. Debating Club and Coffee House.

Enforcement is reactive...and the bureaucracy can't even enforce the laws on the books now, don't be naive. The only way you prevent this is by keeping them from coming here in the first place. There already is a slave class in the US anyhow as millions of de facto slaves have migrated here illegally from Mexico and Latin America.

I know that isn't true, but you know, if the world sees one person in the world do one thing, they think we all do it too.

I agree the UN is just about worthless when it comes to getting anything important done.

Existing laws are more than adequate. Slavery is illegal to begin with. So if people choose to break the law there isn't much that can be done unless they get caught. Murder is also against the law, but people do it all the time anyway. People who don't respect the law can do anything they wish.

Not just in the USA. I watched a program on A&E a number of years ago about Russian sex slaves in Israel. These woman were basically sold into prostitution. Happens in Africa too.

Those must be some closed minded people. I once read about a German man who ate another German man (it was in the news back in 03 or 04) I don't think the world thinks that Germans go around eating each other. I think that the average reasonable person in some other country knows that we don't have legal slavery in the USA.

Well the couple is of Indian origin clearly, they have these values that they bought over from there which are quite primitive in nature, i lived in India and i know how they treat so called "servants" over there. They are paid unbelievably low, children who are younger than 7yrs old work, they are paid at a lower than subsistence rates, theyre beaten and punished, and these values they bought over here have contributed to them thinking that it is okay to treat ppl like that. I think their citizenship should be revoked, i really dont think this is a common occurence in the USA. The fact that these people are of Indian origin, had quite a fortune and didnt pay regular wages really give a bad name to indians and furthers the stereotype of cheap indians.

I can't think of a punishment fitting enough for this, short of executing the perps, but this actually sounds like an interesting idea  scratchchin . I wonder what they would do then - move offshore? Get deported (to where, though)? It wouldn't happen, but it's an interesting idea.

Of course it is. But the point is that the authorities, as soon as they know about it, throw the book at those doing it. If they turned a blind eye to it, that would be sick, but as it is, these people will receive the full fury of the American people. Which is as it should be. You can't ultimately stop people from ignoring the law, you can only punish them when they do.
