Here's hoping that Awesome Bill From Dawsonville does something with the #21 car and won't have to use one of the 6 Past Champion Provisionals he has left. Sunday is a great day if you're a racing fan. The Indy 500 in the early afternoon, with the Coca-Cola 600 later on in the day.

Great weekend for Racing . . . the Indy and the CC600.

Watch the Henrick engines again . . . they've been kicking quite well on 500 miles races this year, another hundred miles won't matter . . . Hendrick is hot this year.

Good for Mark Martin.. I hope he has a good race. I didn't catch any of the qualifying, but earlier in practice I saw Ricky Rudd third on the speed charts, and then he qualifies 34th., damn. I hope he has a better race than he qualified. And as always, Denny Hamlin is due..... I'm rooting for him too.

I actually dont have a problem with Kurt Busch. I think he is a damn good driver that will do anything to win. I cant stand Kyle Busch though. He's a young cocky prick.

Heres a few random thoughts of mine regarding the Coca Cola 600:

-Michael Waltrip didnt qualify again. He better do something quick or Napa will leave.

-David Reutimann didnt qualify. I feel bad for him. He's the only MWR driver that has done good this season.

-Jeff Gordon qualified poorly and hasnt had the runs at Charlotte he had in the past.

I think it would have mattered at Darlington the way he was steaming at the end. But another hundred miles would require another late caution that would have helped him out, so no worries for Hendrick Racing. Its a charmed season when you can get the lead when you're on pit road and the caution comes out. I don't care what the scoring loops said and what the rules are at that track. If you get caught on pit road doing half the speed of the field, you should be buried.

I know I'm snivelling, but I give em credit for having it totally dialed in right now. Another victory for Gordon and it will be time to label the championship his to lose as much as it being anyone else's to win.

GO Gibbs Racing ! Tony's my fav, but the 11 is going to break through soon.

Too late, I heard that NAPA has already looked at the 31 car (AT&T might head out after this year, IIRC) and 16 car (Ameriquest isn't coming back next year).

Same here. Jarrett and Waltrip need to retire and bring some young Busch drivers up to race in the cup series like Brad Coleman, Kertus Davis, Bobby Hamilton Jr, Brent Sherman, Tim Peters, Aric Almirola, Eric McClure, Jason Leffler, Kyle Krisiloff, Brad Keselowski, Shane Huffman, Stephen Leicht, etc.

Good, maybe a non-HMS driver will win.

Your damn right. I'm also a huge Tony Stewart fan. I also think Denny Hamlin is going to break through soon. He has ran too good without winning this year.

Jeff Gordon is running awesome but I think his team has peaked too soon. This reminds me of 05 when Greg Biffle won several races before the halfway point then sputtered down the stretch. I could be wrong though.

Speaking of Greg Biffle, Routh/Fenway Racing announced that Pat Tryson has been removed as Greg Biffle's Crew Chief and was replaced by Greg Erwin. Roush/Fenway Racing reported that results with Tryson werent where the team needed to be. IMO, They should of stuck with Doug Richert. Since Doug is now with Red Bull Racing, Roush/Fenway should try to pry him back.

Looking forward to this weekend, both for the 600 & for Indy. Good runs for DJ, Blaney & Rudd in qualifying. Jimmie Johnson had a similar lap to Gordon's, but lucked into his 21st starting spot.

Michael Waltrip's now missed every race since Daytona. Amazing.

Quoting Delta767300ER (Reply 10):
-Jeff Gordon qualified poorly and hasnt had the runs at Charlotte he had in the past.

He qualified 41st last fall & was in the top 10 before losing the engine. He's also been caught up in a couple wrecks there. If he could find enough luck to get to 600 miles, he may be able to finish well. He was strong at Atlanta & Texas, which are similar tracks.

I'll never forget the fall race at Charlotte where the car was crap early & he spun & got T-boned by Rusty about 70 laps in, only to fight Johnson for the lead at the end of the race.

Point well taken. Good fortune is as good as skill in any endeavour !!

I have a frien who really isn't a big fan, just jumps on board with whomever is the current points leader. In this case, Gordon's the man (deservedly so) and it sucks when I get that Sunday evening phone call saying "Did you see where my horse finished?" My reply, "yeah, yeah, and his wheels are gonna fall off someday."

They'll fire engines and move out shortly. No stopping for rain - like Indy 500 - partly cloudy and 80+ degrees (F) in CLT at the moment.

Sometimes the race doesn't go to the swiftest, but to the smartest...props to Casey for his first career win, Yeley finishing second is his best ever finish, and Kyle finishes third.

And it is poetic justice.....another Mears wins a Memorial Day weekend race...

Was nice to see a car with National Guard logo win on Memorial Day weekend!
May be a tiny bit of a boost to morale for those troops...
BTW, one of those cars was on display at AirFest 2007 at MacDill this spring...

Awesome finish. Top 5 or 6 guys made the fuel mileage work...good for them. Glad to see Kyle Petty with a top 5 finish...I would've been stunned had he won. That would have been cool. Still, good for Casey. First wins are always fun to watch.

How about Casey Mears' excitement after the race? That was pretty cool! When the white came out, all I could think of for Casey Mears & the 25 car was Jerry Nadeau at Atlanta in Nov. 2001, when Nadeau ran out of gas leading in turn 3 on the last lap (which I hated seeing, BTW).

. . . ain't gonna be Hendrick's day today is it.

It was, just from the HMS driver nobody figured would win.  Wink

The entire Joe Gibbs team in the top ten...not too shabby.

Kind of wonder about a sport where everyone knows you must have gas... that is for the entire race... and 3 of the top drivers had to pit with 7 to go ?

I am not a NASCAR fan , but is it weird ? Or did they all run the same statagy ... that did not work ?

The strategy was - hope for a Caution Flag.

Had someone else popped the wall in the last 35 laps, Stewart would have had an opportunity - along with Little E, et al, to hit the pit for gas under a Caution with the Field Frozen. No change in position really. That was the Strategy.

Of course, no one caused a Caution, all the broke dick drivers that USUALLY do that were already out of the race or so many laps down it didn't matter.

The strategy just didn't work. This time.

Tony's my man and I hope the fortunes of racing are tilting his way, but I was impressed by Gordon's post crash interview. He didn't call anyone stupid or over agressive, he just took his lumps and headed for the hauler. Guess its easy to be relaxed when you know you can absorb a bad race and still hold the points lead.

I was hoping for one more caution, for Tony's sake, but it wasn't to be. Still, a great finish for some less than star studded teams.

Unusual for him. He's a great driver, has a hell of a record, but "it's never his fault". Credit due though, no gripes yesterday. That said: He is over 200 points in front of everyone else. He couldn't lose yesterday - no matter what.

As was I . . . . one little caution and it'd been done.

Now where was NASCAR with their infamous Phantom Cautions yesterday, the bastards.

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS TOP 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1... Casey Mears
2... JJ Yeley
3... Kyle Petty
4... Reed Sorenson
5... Brian Vickers

My DVR ended with 55 laps to go (my fault, I usually over tape) so imagine my smile when I saw the Top 5! My driver (Ward Burton) didn't make the field again so I then root for the underdogs. To see Casey Mears win was fantastic, and JJ Yeley certainly needed a top finish what with all of the Dale, Jr. talk that's popped up with the 18 car (doubt it happens).
Kyle finishing 3rd was good for the smaller teams and I think he's looking to get out of full time racing on a high note (he goes to TNT as an analyst for 5 races coming up shortly). Sorenson gets his career best in 4th and Vickers (and Mayfield too) gave Toyota execs something to cheer for on the biggest day in motorsports (F1 Monaco, Indy, Charlotte)...

Good race for the most part.
