Knottsberry Farm...worth The Trip?

Wed May 30, 2007 6:02 am

Today is vacation Friday. We were going to HNL but flights are full and the wife has to work now that the boss had her baby early. Thought about taking the girls to Knottsberry Farm, an amusement park we haven't been too. Anyone been there lately? Worth the trip to LA?

It's been many years since I was there . . . like twenty or so.

How old are 'the girls'? Youngin's enjoy amusement parks pretty much no matter what.

Too bad it's in L.A.

I'd say - jump on it . . .  biggrin

Its been a lot of years since I was there (10+), but I always used to enjoy it. Rides are decent, didn't have quite the polished/commercial feel of Disney, and its more manageable in size.

I'd wondered about that too. We were pretty disappointed at the size of Disneyland when we were there a few years ago. It was pretty tiny compared to the parks we are used to. Anything better to suggest anywhere else?

Well, since the girls are in the age where the rides are more important than the environment, try Magic Mountain. That place is roller coaster central, and attached to a giant water park.

It used to be a really cool park, but in recent years they have demolished most things that made it unique and just built rides on top of the next. The rides are pretty good, but if I had a choice between Knotts and SIx Flags or Disneyland I would go with the latter.

If you have never been to knotts and you have been to the others you probably will enjoy yourself but more than likely you wont find yourself wanting to go back.

Its sad because I used to love that park.

It's OK. The Silver Bullet (I think it is.) is a great ride, but the Xcelerator lines were very long. I went in Feb. and temps were great. Their wooden coaster is also quite nice, but not the best. The back seat can also give some people a bad headache, and some of my friends did not like it. In February, you could get in as a couple (Two of the friends I went with pretended they were gay to get the 1/2 off discount.), but I assume that was a Valentines thing.

The park has a nice free fall sort of tower too, if you enjoy that.

Anyway, it's fun but not great. Nothing they have is the best of its type, but it's certainly not the worst. If the crowds are going to be large, I'd just skip it.

The rides are good. As RichPhitzwell said, the charm that once defined Knotts Berry Farm is essentially gone. Pretty much the only original stuff remaining is camp snoopy and the ghost town. Since I've been working at Disneyland for the past 3 years, that has become my standard of what a theme park should be. When I went to knotts back in Sept, I was disappointed in how they display their park. Smoking is allowed everywhere, the majority of the crowd is definitely a lower class (like a discount theme park) and just not the type that makes you feel all warm and cozy. A lot of little punks in their wannabe gangster attire etc. To put it simply, you DO NOT go there for the environment like you would Disneyland. So if the girls like roller coasters, give it a go. It's pretty cheap park compared to Disneyland. And if you go, check out the Calico Western Review show thing on the outdoor stage next to the train station, my sister is a dancer in it.

Knotts Berry Farm certainly isnt as good as DL but its pretty good fun and has some cool rides. I enjoyed my time there but that wooden rollercoaster is a neck breaker!!  Smile

Yeah its all good! They got quite a few good roller coasters there etc...
however I must say if you can get about, Six Flags Magic Mountain definantly has more thrills!

Knotts has I think 5 roller coasters, a whitewater raft ride, logflume, skydrop, and lots of other smaller rides etc. Their newest main roller coaster is one of those hangdown ones and its pretty extreme! Big grin

I think this mainly applies to Magic Mountain. Knotts is till a great theme park in and of itself, although it will still take all day to do everything in the park.

One thing about the attire and gang-bangers, though, is hey, you're in L.A.—expect that sort of attitude. The number you'll find at Knotts is nothing compare to what you would see at Magic Mountain.
