Help Pick The 8 Wonders Of Kansas!

Fri Jun 01, 2007 5:29 am

I think it's a State of Kansas promotion; apparently there will be actually 24 sites in the running to be narrowed down to 8. Yes, twenty four amazing Kansas sites.

"Background for the Eight Wonders of Kansas

Since 1994, the Kansas Sampler Foundation has been encouraging Kansans to see Kansas with new eyes by looking for the eight rural culture elements of architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history, and people. Those eight categories will now be used to help people think about the best Kansas has to offer and to determine the Eight Wonders of Kansas.

Criteria for the 8 Wonders

The criteria for the 8 Wonders is that they be publicly accessible, open regularly, non-national franchise, and likely to be around for awhile. Events are not being considered.
"

http://www.kansassampler.org/8wonders.html

Anyone care to nominate anything in Kansas for consideration? Can anyone name anything in Kansas? Kansas City doesn't count.

Having lived in extreme western Kansas for two years, I would ask what if they had a contest and no one submitted anything. Wonders in Kansas?

I can find good in just about any place, but Kansas?
The best I could find was the band Kansas. Since there are 6 members, that leaves only 2 more wonders left to find.

Check out this awesome YouTube video of Kansas at there best.  Cool

Having driven through, and spent a few days there, I can think of two wonders:

"Welcome to Colorado"

"Welcome to Missouri"

The fact that it's rural makes it tougher. Art and architecture are rare in metropolitan Kansas, let alone rural Kansas. Commerce...same thing...there isn't a lot going on here outside of Kansas City or Wichita, which are of course not rural locations. We rank 8th in US oil production, mostly all rural in central and south Kansas, so maybe that? Geography...the plains of western Kansas can be gorgeous, especially at sunset or sunrise, with the waving wheat and the wind blowing off the Rockies with nothing to stop it...Tallgrass Prairie, near Emporia, can be gorgeous as well. History is where Kansas shines, especially when you link it back to Brown v Board of Education (Topeka) and the Civil War, when places like my current residence of Lawrence, KS fought against the slaves that came over from that god awful place we call Missouri. People is also where Kansas shines...some of the nicest people in the USA.

Colorado, ok...Missouri, come on, worst state in the country! I cringe when I see the "Welcome to Missouri" sign because that means I'm going to lose at least one part of my car in a pothole or some other horrible road condition. My friends and I once took a picture on I-70 in central Missouri where a sign spoke of road work with another sign over it saying "Road Work Completed as Promised!" and potholes/other poor road conditions. That about sums up Missouri  Smile

I was born in Kansas. Yes, I admit it. I think Kansas is a beautiful state to visit. I live in Oregon. LOL

Anyway, the Eisenhower Museum is cool, so is the Garden of Eden. I am surprised the center of the 48 States near Lebanon did not make the list. There was a zoo in Garden City. It has been a while since I have been there and I always enjoyed going there. The Flint Hills did not impress me much but Monument Rocks are cool too.

Kansas is not that bad. Have you been to North Dakota or Nevada (except Las Vegas, Reno, or Lauglin) lately?

For a group that is aerospace oriented I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. Arguably the finest space museum in the U.S. and perhaps the world....

Well one wonder is the street in Lawrence that is steep enough to have to close when it snows (or it did when I was there).

There IS the Kansas oil. Which leads to the great depression in I70 where there has been a collapse into subsided areas in the Hutchinson Salt Beds as water has flowed down to replace oil pumped from below the salt. I still treasure a postcard titled "Glorious I70". So they have a great sense of humour, that should count!

Or the absolutely superb exposures of foraminiferal limestones in the cuttings from Lawrence through to about Topeka. Folk come from overseas especially to see and collect them would you believe!!

There is much more but you would not be able to stand it. Trust the foreigners to know what is great!

No mention so far of the Jayhawks vs Col Q's raiders or that nice little battle down near La Cygne. Or of Brown J and his "assistance" to the early settlers.

There are multiple ones like that, but the steepest are 11th, 12th, and 13th from Jayhawk Blvd. to Mass. Street.
