Spain:open Competition For National Anthem Lyrics

Sun Jun 03, 2007 7:28 pm

Spain's national anthem, la Marcha Real has the originality of not having any lyrics. However, the Spanish olympic commitee has opened up a public competition to get lyrics for the national anthem , based upon the spirit of sport which al lthe athletes will be able to sing during the competitions
Here is a link to my source. Some people criticize this by saying its a useless peice of patriotic propaganda but others are very enthousiastic ,especially football players who say that because many people don't know Spain0s anthem has no lyrics , they get very criticized for not singinf anything before the games.

They already had a hymn with lyrics:

Himno de Riego
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/54/Himno_Riego.ogg

Spanish lyrics

Serenos y alegres, valientes y osados,

English version:

Serene and happy, brave and daring,
Let us sing, soldiers, the battle hymn.
Our voices shall astonish the world
Which will see us as the children of the Cid.

Soldiers, the country calls us to the fight.
We swear to her to conquer or to die.

Never saw the world more noble daring,
Nor any day when greater valour was shown,
Than that when excited we saw the fire of battle
Awaken in Riego the love of his land.

Soldiers, the country calls us to the fight.
We swear to her to conquer or to die.

The war trumpet echoes to the winds;
Affrighting the greedy, the cannon now roars.
Our warrior daring calls forth the audacity
And the ingenuity of our nation.

Soldiers, the country calls us to the fight.
We swear to her to conquer or to die.

This hymn dates back to the first Spanish civil war of 1820-1823. It was used during the Trieno Liberal and the first Spanish Republic during the 19th century as well as the 2nd Spanish Republic during the 1930s. It was banned under Franco. The tune is actually quite lively.

Too dated. I suggest something that includes references to gay marriage and surrender to those who blow up Spanish citizens. Actually FIGHTING and DYING for anything is soooo 20th century.

But it was never offcially re-adopted, reason why they want new lyrics I guess

Maybe because it was (except for the time of it's first use during the first Spanish civil war in the 19th century) always the republican anthem. It was banned under Franco and later Spain became a monarchy again. "Marcha Real" just means "Royal March" (for the non Spanish speakers on this board).

Brilliant!!

I love the Italian anthem tho!

Fratelli d'Italia,
l'Italia s'è desta,
dell'elmo di Scipio
s'è cinta la testa.
Dov'è la Vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
che schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò.

and so on...

A rather shallow basis for a national anthem.

A truly patriotic anthem is hardly "useless propaganda" - unless its just rooted in a game.

Quoting MD11Engineer (Reply 1):

It's not hard to understand why - the lyrics might inspire people to arms.

A pity - it's quite beautiful.
