Trooper Injured Making A Traffic Stop

Trooper Hit By Semi In Stable Condition

(WCCO) A state trooper was hit by a truck after he got out of his squad car for a traffic stop on Interstate 94 near Sauk Centre, State Patrol officials said.

The trooper, Gregg Gerhartz, 41, an eight-year veteran of the patrol, suffered a leg injury and was flown to St. Cloud Hospital.

He is in stable condition in a St. Cloud hospital and underwent surgery Tuesday night.

Kai,

Most do, and some are plain ignorant. I know as I commute via highway and notice a lot of ignorant ones. Hope the trooper gets better.

I'm really curious to know why the truck driver did not move to the left lane.

It's good to know the trooper is in stable condition.

edit: Typo!

My guess, some moron in the left lane cruising along in oblivion.

I'll be happy to defend the "line haulers" in this thread.

Being on the 'other side' of this fence, I can tell you one of the best friends a copper will ever have out there is a long haul truck driver. The drivers - at least in Alaska - will stop and help you out in a heartbeat. Given the geography and weather here, that shouldn't surprise anyone.

I'd rather have to deal with a line hauler any time of any day than some moron (especially tourists) that have their head in rectal defilade driving a 4-wheeler somewhere for whatever.

. . . . .

Glad the trooper is in recovery . . . hope he's back on the road soon.

In New Mexico, I've never seen a trucker not move over to the left lane (when able) for law enforcement vehicles.

The story said that the wreck happened at 4am. The flashing lights of the trooper's car should have woken this guy up. There isn't usually that much traffic at 4am in the Sauk Center area that time of night, so he should have been able to get in the left lane, or have slowed down if he couldn't have gotten over. No excuse for this fella.

It's good to hear that he'll be okay. By the looks of the car he is lucky to come out of the accident with his life.

I've seen it so many times on the highway that people won't move over or in the case of a 2 lane highway where moving over is impossible that they won't even slow down for the lights.

Agreed..

Studies have shown the most dangerous law enforcement job out there is being a highway patrolman, the human body doesn't do well against vehicles traveling at highway speeds.

Better get your reading glasses on, Go3Team..

Now they're also saying the trucker was working over the 11-hour driving limit, not that it should excuse the incident but just something else to think about.

Nope, no excuse. I wouldn't be suprised if he "fell down" a few times on the way to jail. At least we can take comfort that STLGPH probably gave this driver the finger.

In which case he should have slowed way down, and not been on the shoulder in the first place. Probably one of those idiots who will cheat their log every chance they geet.

This is just another reason for me to time ALL bills inbound and outbound, all copies. I don't care if a trucker bitches, I'll just ask if he thinks it's cool to run over people because he doesn't care about the laws that are there for a reason.

If I can get one idiot trucker into trouble, great  Smile

I know a lot of counties/states are adopting laws that require drivers to either move to the left lane or slow down if unable to move over in the case that an emergency vehicle is on the shoulder. My friends in STL referred to it as "Scott's Law," apparently named after such an accident involving a man named Scott.

Also, I'm surprised that more police departments aren't adopting the procedure of approaching the right side of the vehicle instead of the left for safety reasons. I guess this particular officer didn't expect such an accident at 4am, when traffic is typically light.

Here's hoping for a speedy and complete recovery.

The question becomes, where was he when he was hit? in the car? pinned? nearby?

CO7e7 may remember this, but a few months back some cop got pinned by a SUV while making a stop. Paralyzed....

In CA most of the time I saw CHP officers on the side of the road (other than accidents) they were helping a stranded motorist -- head under the hood, helping change a tire, whatever.

In Ohio, I have never seen an officer rendering aid on the freeway and only once on a surface street. I have seen them lined up 20-deep waiting to nab people for 7 miles over.

Really shows you the mentality in each state. (And don't even get me started on what happens when you call 911 from a Cell phone in Ohio). The CHP's moto is "Safety and Service" and I have the utmost respect for them (I respect all LEOs, but the CHP has a special place in my heart -- I didn't realize how good I had it in CA)

Depends where you are in Texas.

In the middle of Dallas? Not likely. On a highway in the middle of nowhere? Probably will.

We have the move over laws here, and they get enforced quite strictly. We lose to many officers to accidents during stops, and I'll never understand a single on of them.
