Strange Sights At Red Lights

Mon Jun 11, 2007 10:17 pm

So this morning I was going to work and I was waiting for the red light to go green.
That's when I realised the SUV in front of me was far, far, very far from home  Smile:

I have seen a few European Plates before in Miami and a few Puerto Rico ones. Thats all I seen really far from home and I have seen just about every state plate down in South Florida, Alaska, Washington, California etc.. even a few Bahamas ones too. But that is close to Miami.

That car has Maryland tags at the red light, very far.

Just the other day on High Street Kensington spotted a car with California plates.

I had my South African registered Fiat in Adelaide for a year...it was funny to see people looking at the plates and trying to figure out where it came from.

I've seen a BMW X5 with California plates around here..and a German-registered VW Passat.

You can see a lot of British registered cars in the Paderborn area, but no wonder, many UK soldiers are based there.

One of my neighbors is driving a Merc S-Class with Dutch plates but I have no idea why, I am sure that he is German judging from his accent (or a Dutch guy who is speaking better German than me).

During the war in Bosnia some Canadian peace-keeping soldiers saw an Ontario registered car. They ran a check on it with the Ministry of Transport and (you might already have guessed) -it was reported stolen in Toronto

Well I saw something strange at a red light this morning here in LA...drivers actually stopped!!

I had a friend in college in CT who came from Dusseldorf, Deutschland, with his BMW 320. For 2 years he collected parking tickets that went unpaid, and the local authorities were never able to track him down.

I saw a motor coach with German number plates here in Wisconsin five years ago. They had driven from there via Siberia, Alaska, and Canada to attend the Alcoholics Anonymous convention in Minneapolis.

There is a Jeep Liberty running around my neck of the woods with plates from Japan.

A few years ago, a group of some thirty RVs rolled through town representing Switzerland, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. Now that was sure strange.

A bunch of family members and I went to South Dakota a few years back. We took tally of all the state license plates we saw. We got 48 of the 50. The only two we didn't get were Vermont and Alaska.

You see quite a few motorhomes with European plates around here during the summer months. I've also seen quite a few North American plates in Germany including a couple of BC plates when I lived there. I've also seen a few trucks on the Autobahn with Middle-Eastern and African plates, most interesting one was probably from Iran driving on the A12 in Utrecht.

One block from my house in Warsaw there lives a 2002 Cadillac Escalade with Florida plates registered in Seminole county. Funny, because thats 1 county over from where I go to school  Wink

I see US/Canada registered cars in Poland all the time, usually from NJ, NY, IL and Ontario. Vice Versa ive seen an Opel Astra with French plates 100 miles outside of Denver on the interstate, Ive seen an XC90 in Daytona Beach with German plates also. Here in Chicago ive seen maybe 50-60 cars with Polish plates + seen quite a few California and Texas plates in Puerto Vallarta

I saw this German registered VW bus on the parking lot of Kennedy Space Center in Florida in 2004 (the yellow one).

You see my own bus (the white one) next to it, it is New York registered but I have a German plate with the same number as well.

I don't even think of out of state plates as being strange anymore... it's just a part of life around here it seems. A scan of my office parking lot will yield Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Connecticut that I can think of off hand. The strangest one I have seen out here was a Right-Hand Drive Astra GTE I saw here in Sacramento about 12 years ago with the UK plates on it.

Nice to know I'm not the only one that does this. I just ordered personalized plates for my TR7 with the original UK reg# on it just to keep some of the history of the car alive.

I saw a Texas plated GMC SUV drive through Stroud, Gloucestershire a couple of weeks ago. I seem to remember seeing a Pontiac parked in Painswick with Arizona plates a couple of years back as well.

Funny that one was Maryland, My home state! Didnt see what was wrong with the pic until I saw the other car, so used to seeing those plates. Got a bit lost by the looks of things!

Seen several european plates here in the Yukon over the years, including a couple on those RVs that seem like they are bigger than my house. Saw one a couple years ago an RV that was probably 30+ feet long towing a mercedes, both with european plates...

I haven't seen any out of place license plates, but once when I was walking around downtown Minneapolis two college age kids stopped at a red light then turned their music up all the way and jumped out of the car and started dancing in the middle of the street until the light turned green then they jumped back in and drove off.

Drive around the Mildenhall/Lakenheath area of England and there are no end of American cars with American plates, due to the two US airbases down there. It's really weird to suddenly see huge American SUVs in the UK!

Drive onto the airbase and it's even more so - just like being in America with American buildings, signs, restaurants etc!

No doubt.. But it was still odd as hell.. I would like to say seeing Alaska plates is odd here but I probaly see more of those in a given day than any other state.. Especially because my subdivision seems to be almost all USAF.

Some piece of crap Ford Fiesta with an altered registration sticker last night came up has having last been registered in Belgium, EU. That was a little odd that someone would bother to bring a car that looked this bad with them across the ocean.

I've seen a Hawaiian license plate in Pittsburgh. Hate to go on that drive/sail/dive :P

There are quite a few folks with European license plates in the front, since Pennsylvania license plates only go in the back, and in the town right next to mine, there are dealerships for high-end European car manufacturers. Who knew that 5 minutes away from Crapville you can buy a Porsche, Lotus, or Rolls-Royce! Big grin

A friend of mine did something like this.

He and his brothers-in-law and some cousins were going out to a boxing match for the evening. Most of them were already lit by the time they set out (except the driver, who had just gotten out of jail and had no desire to go back for a DUI). They went in the family minivan and put a porn film on the DVD system on the way there. My friend, being a respectable kind of citizen, made sure that the film could not be seen from the outside - but this was when it was light out. When they were on their way home from the boxing match, it was dark - and of course people could see in and see the screen. But this was when they were stuck in traffic after the boxing match and people just honked and gave them the thumbs up!  Smile

I laughed my ass off when he told me this story.
But that was when I ruled the world
