Shortest Time You've Ever Held A Job?

Tue Jun 12, 2007 8:21 am

...title's pretty self explanatory: what is the shortest amount of time you've ever formally held a job?

Was your departure voluntary or forced? What kind of job was it? Do you regret it?

Mine was working at SuperTarget-- had just gotten my first college apartment, parents weren't going to pay for it, so needed some quick income. Didn't even last 9 days, hated being there with an indescribable passion.

What say you?

Half a day. It was a rent-to-own place I worked at when I was younger. After I saw their unscrupulous business practices I went to lunch and didn't bother to come back.

5 weeks at a e-commerce fulfillment company as a data entry clerk during summer vacation when I was at college. It paid okay money, but they management team had absolutely zero idea on how to effectively manage and lead people. After being told that data entry had to be performed in silence and that walkmans were banned, I got up, gathered my stuff, and walked out.

For the rest of the summer I washed cars, made a shed load of money doing it, and had a great time. Should've just done that instead of data entry.

Two jobs, one nearly right after the other that I worked for about 3 weeks each, while I was waiting for my start date on a new job.

The first was working for a bankruptcy trustee. I did a physical inventory of everything in the office, and got all the accounting files on the computer in order, for a company that had filed chapter 7 and dismissed all their employees.

The second was filling in for a production assistant on a movie who'd gotten sick, and they needed someone to fill his shoes quickly. Got both jobs by knowing people who knew I was just sitting around enjoying life too much for a while. For the movie job I was literally called Sunday night and on the set at 7am Monday morning.

Well, same here. Almost off my 30 days and turning in 2 weeks. Wish Target would help others out.

When I was 16 I worked at McDonalds for one hour. I saw the training video and walked out.

Minimum wage was $4.25 back then. I hadn't filled out my tax paperwork yet and received a check in the mail for $4.25.

Well at an airline I got hired for the kitchen, and after completing a whole entire 4 days of working there I was officially moved to grooming. Same airline, same boss, same building, different job. They wanted me to move because they needed me more as a groomer, and I was happy to switch due to a) groomers go on the planes more and b) it saves me from that 0500 shift I was on with catering.

About two days. I had gotten a packaging job at a warehouse through a temp agency and it was really was rougher than I thought it would be. After the first day, I ended up with a pain in a wrist because of heavy repetitive motion and the second day I tried to work through the pain but couldn't so I walked off the job.

I've seen folks walk off the job at places on the first day. Some made it until the meal break and never came back, others after less than an hour. There was one job I had through a temp agency years back where we had so much turnover that the client had to use two different agencies in order to keep a full staff (The staff was only 5 people when fully staffed). Turnover was so bad that I go promoted to an assistant lead in less than two months after starting there. Being employed through a temp agency meant that one day you could get a call saying that you're off the assignment.

One month.

I worked from mid August '96 to about mid September '96 at the local Subway. The owners were losing money and had already closed their other location in Santa Fe. Since I had been the last person they hired, I was the first to be let go. The location I worked at would eventually close the following December.
I lift things up and put them down.

I was a receptionist for an Arabian bank way back for a few weeks in Europe, most boring job I have ever had. The head honcho only came once a week and the rest of the time I read magazines, did acupressure so I would not fall asleep, etc.. The pay was ok but it was sooo boring!

I was sacked from my first job after a couple of weeks.

I collected trolleys and stacked shelves. I let a lot of people down by my behaviour of taking things for granted.

It was a salutary lesson for me in working life, one that I will never repeat again.

My first job was last summer. I worked at CVS Pharmacy in Millerton, NY from July 9th to August 17th. My aunt was the manager and she was cool. I had no problem with the job in general, I just decided early in August that I wanted to move back to SoCal, and so obviously, my job in NY had to end.

In that short month, a few cool things happened, including Vin Diesel popping in to buy some stuff! You should've seen the girls in the store start freaking out, it was hilarious!

A little over 2 years, if I recall correctly. Not sure how I made it that long though, as the owners were the worst people ever. Once I left, even my manager left.

Well, I had 2 short times.

McD's- Processed my 1st order, over the "recommended time" by 5 sec. Was bitched at by the shift manager for 10 min. Asked me if I had anything to say. I gave him the finger and left. That was say...15 min

I worked at this construction company for 7 days. I was promised $10/hour, got my check and it was done with 8.50/hr. I did heavy labor for 9 hrs a day for 8.50 an hour. I was really pissed off since I didn't like the job anyway since I was the only non-convict working at the whole job. I never bothered showing up after cashing my check.

Abercrombie and Fitch- Green Hills Mall (Nashville)

the job really wasnt that bad and the managers were pretty cool actually...as well as alot of the people that worked there. but they made me go recruit at my college (Vanderbilt) and the stupid ass taglines that I was supposed to use were just outrageously pathetic. I lasted a little over a month and then quit when i headed back home for the summer.

I worked with this French baker in October, for about three weeks before he made some creepy physical advances, so I quit. The pay wasn't worth his stinginess and icky contact (coming from a married man with a 6 year old daughter).  Wow! I mean, when I asked if he might pay me minimum wage, he said that I could earn "extra money" by agreeing to go to his bakery after wrapping up at the Farmers Market. As if I'm going to trust him being alone with me in a bakery on a quiet side street!  Wow!

Back in '99, I spent 2 weeks working for a local building company/real estate agent. Let's just say I didn't agree with their sales practices..... They seemed to be constantly in either a court or tribunal over something they'd done. I pretty much left by mutual agreement, I got another job in retail before becoming a Public Servant.

Two days - working at the Pacific Internet shop in Sydney. Planned to do it part time for extra money - did two shifts, made redundant in my other job, and scored a new job that negated the need for the part time one.

Less than two weeks as a sales rep at North Texas Nissan in Lewisville/Corinth, Texas.

Lasted 2 days on the floor after their week-and-a-half-"How To Con People Into Buying A Car" seminar. Just couldn't look someone dead in the eye after looking over their horrible credit report and convince them they needed to blow their money on a depreciating asset that we would be reposessing in 6 months...and couldn't stand just how cutthroat and unscrupulous some of my coworkers (and managers) were.

Makes me never want to buy another car from anyone but a brand new employee...they're still innocent.

First job was as a strawberry picker. Was fired after about 3 days for having a strawberry fight with my brother, also a picker. And I wasn't picking all the strawbs on the bush. Altogether not a great employee. Have also been fired/pushed out of 3 of my 4 other jobs since then, hence I'm running my own business now.

In college I applied for a fast food job, one of the cashiers was hot. Basically found out she had a BF or was a complete Scotty or something to that nature. Anyways, I was offered the job, watched the 30 minute welcome to BK, and never came back.

And to think, I could have advanced to Assistant Manager at Burger King if I would have only stayed.  Wink

I worked at a McDonald's in Eureka, Missouri in 1992-1993. I left briefly, in 1992, to take a job at Shop N' Save grocery store in Ballwin, Missouri. When I left McD's my boss told me I would be back. She was right I hated the grocery store and went back to Mc Donald's after 10 days.

The grocery store was a short job, but it was just a BS job anyway. In 2000 I moved to Detroit to work for a Company called TAC Automotive. They paid for me to move here and after three weeks I was fired. Never knew why for sure, but one day they just told me my services were not needed. I got a very similar job a few weeks later with a another company and quit after six months. So I guess I would have quit that job too.

My buddy Alex had a roofing job for one day. He made $102 bucks and ruined a $75 pair of boots, actually only one was destroyed.

We have had teachers at my work who lasted less than one day. Teaching high risk urban high schoolers in Detroit isn't for everyone. We usually get one per year. After the first day they don't come back. We have even had a few go out to lunch and never come back. Most people can't handle it. I have been there 6 1/2 years and nobody, including the principal, has been there longer than me. They haven't beaten me yet!

1200-1400

I used to work for a oil company, which i had done for 2 years. They said i was not working hard enough (though did a number of different jobs form the one i was meant to, and had 2 bosses telling me what to do at the same time)

My ex boss (B£$%^%D) owns a lot of property in the local area, one being a hotel. I used to work as a waiter, so he said i was being moved there, less pay, less hours. No real alternate.

Did one lunchtime shift there and walked out. Worst job ever.

Had to go thru 3 dorrs from the kitchen to dining room, out a pull door upstairs and thru another pull door to the wash room, fun when pilled with plates.

I wish i had the nerves to compalin as was treated like a piece of dirt by my bosses

In my summer after my sophomore year in high school I'd just gotten my car, and quit my job as a bus boy at an Italian restaurant. I was hired at a Polo Ralph Lauren outlet nearby, and worked there for about 3 weeks... Just enough to collect one very nice paycheck. The day I got it, I blew it 5 minutes before my shift with my awesome discount, got into my car, called in and quit.

Retail wasn't for me, I hated it. The training was terrible, I was given absolutely NO information on our products, therefore I was always completely unprepared for customers questions... Plus the management was stupid and useless. The kind of people who's life IS managing a retail store in BFN, Georgia.

The contract got ripped up within the hour when I wouldn't sleep with the guy.

Too bad I went and made a copy before that all happened and was still able to cash in on the signing bonus.

Four days. It was those survey people that like to bother you when eating dinner. Though mine was bothering doctors and lawyers during the day. It required shirt and tie, and reading a script. I didn't dress well enough, get enough people to complete surveys (okay I never got one person to actually do one), and never followed the script. I wore a button down dress shirt, with a tie, slacks, dress socks and shoes. Don't know why they said my dress wasn't professional enough. Then I followed the script verbatim and said I didn't follow the script. When I showed her the script she said it was in error and will look into it. Eventually I was ready to walk out and never return. My parents wouldn't let me quit so I was going to say I was fired. I got fired before I could quit!

I was given a speech saying how something isn't your calling...I cut him off mid-sentence and said if you are going to fire me, just say so. He said would you want to pick up your check next week? I said you can just mail it. It was the happiest rush hour drive home possible!

10 Months.

I had a paper round (Ok, not a real job..). It was once a week, the pay sucked (I worked it out, i got an average of £6.90/$13 a week) And i got pissed on, frozen hands from the cold during the winter (I did it November to August so for half of it i froze to death because it was after school), sore back from dragging the trolley that must've weighed at least 20kgs, and sore feet from dragging it up 6 steep hills on my round.

It got to the point were i just hid the papers out of giving up, not wanting a sore back for the next 4 days and not wanting sore feet constantly.

Yeah, it sucked.

Way to stand your ground. A buddy of mine in college, who was working part time as a janitor, had a female coworker who wanted to have sex with him in exchange for better job duties. He was fired, when he refused. A few months later the supervisor had to step down after she was caught doing that with several other employees. There was a lawsuit involving wrongful termination of 9 student janitors. The lawsuit was settled out of court with a no charge degree given to the defendants. They still had to earn the degree, they just didn't have to pay.

On of my first jobs actually. I got a job at the library (of all places!). They called my mom and left a message for me to show up at a certain time and day. I never got the message. So I phoned a few weeks later for some feedback and learned that, not only did I get the job, but I'd been canned for abandonment.

I still tease my Mom for that. She felt so bad.
