I've Passed My Boards! (shameless Self-gloss)

Tue Jun 19, 2007 9:47 pm

Hello to all

It is time for you people to bring out all those cargo bays, give-a-f...-meters and so on.

After neglecting A.net for a long time (the shame...) I completed today my examinations for the full qualification as a paediatric surgeon in Germany, which is equal to the European boards. After a marathon of 3 hours of oral exam (questions and answers, not the other type) I have been fully accredited.

I am very happy with the result, and I wanted to share it with you.

Ok, now let's see the cargo bays.

Cheers to all,

Alex

Well, to tell the truth, sometimes I wish I would still be working on my MCATs... whole life ahead of you, dreams and such. Once you have achieved yours, it kind of leaves an empty space....

.... which my wife is more than happy to fill with lots of new projects and challenges  biggrin   cheerful

That is a tremendous accomplishment!! Heartiest congratulations and respect from here!

I have a friend who is a pediatric emergency physician in Tennessee. What a difficult, but very satisfying, specialty of the medical field, working with our youngest people.

Best wishes for a lifelong and satisfying career!

Hello again, dear friends

Thank you so much for the kind messages. I was indeed expecting a lot of cargo bays, and I am truly thankful for your kindness.

Needless to say, I started back today - and I haven't eaten a thing in the last 12 hours!  biting

Thanks once again. I really appreciated it.

Hi from SmithAir747 (Francis)!

CONGRATULATIONS from a fellow traveler in the journey of medicine!

That is a worthy, noble achievement for which you can be truly proud. All those years of studying, testing, staying up all night, and more testing have paid off. Now go and make the most of your hard-earned career, which I know you really enjoy!

I have enjoyed the opportunity to communicate with you on these boards, and have nothing but the utmost respect for you.

Enjoy!

PS: Do you still work with many children with craniofacial anomalies?

As a physician myself, I thought I would try to fill in the picture a little bit. They don't let just anyone become a pediatric surgeon. These folks are at the top of their game, both with regards to skill and intelligence. We are lucky to have Alex in our company.
Congrats!

Hi Francis! Glad to hear from you. Yes, we have been operating in quite a few - I have done a couple of scaphocephalus - corrections lately (you know, the butterfly resection of the skull) - they turned out great, I was very pleased. My boss operated on a baby with a complex cranial dysmorphy (a mixture of brachicephalus and scaphocephalus), took him 13 hours to get the skull back together! How is your research going?

Thank you so much. These words mean a lot to me. I assume you are in ICU or anesthesia, right? ETCO2 is a rather intensivist jargon!

Once again, Thanks a lot you all.

Good to hear from you too! What a fascinating type of surgery!

I have finished my course at King's College London; I completed my chick-embryo research on the regulation of myogenesis in the mandibular and hyoid arches. My thesis was submitted in late April, and in May and June, I took my final exams. Last summer I did research on the novel molecule Scube3 on mouse embryos.

I am now at home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I am spending a short time at home with my large family and friends, before I move out to San Francisco, CA, in mid-July. My PhD will be at UCSF, in the department of Oral & Craniofacial Sciences.

In mid-July, I will move into my apartment at UCSF in San Francisco, and my PhD course will start September 12. I have no idea yet on what my research topic will be; the typical PhD programme in the USA takes at least 5 years. The first 2 years are devoted to lab rotations and taught courses. At the end of 2 years, I will sit a qualifying exam (consisting of writing a full research proposal) in order to begin my major research project (for the next 3+ years).

Are you familiar with UCSF? If not, you can visit their website at: http://www.ucsf.edu and look for the Oral & Craniofacial Sciences programme (you can search by keyword on the UCSF site). There you will have an idea of my future research.

By the way, I hope to meet you someday, wherever! Being in California, I will be a lot farther away from Germany than I was in the UK!
