New Laptop- Need Some Help :-(

Thu Jun 21, 2007 3:10 am

So I got a new laptop yesterday evening, an HP Pavillion equipped with Windows Vista, and I'm already having a few difficulties (I have to mention I'm ot an expert):

-The internet connection doesn't work properly: I have to go to "Set up a connection or network" every time I want to connect to the wireless network we have. Is there any easier way?

- Firefox doesn't work: I open it, and it displays a blank page no matter what.

- I can't watch Youtube videos:

Quote:
Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

How do I turn Javascript on?
When I click the link for the Flash player, I get this page. Unfortunately I have no idea what all that means.  Sad

During the Java setup, there was an error because of proxy settings, but I didn't touch the default settings.  confused

- I can't install any version of DirectX, I have no idea why.

- Finally (I think), I can't get Windows live messenger to work: I can't sign in because I'm not connected to a .NET messenger service.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Smile

Vista did change a few things and Ill have to look when I get home. But its basically like XP, just make sure your wireless card is on... If nobody else answers or if you cant figure it out Ill reply later tonight and help walk you through.

Vista 64 comes with two versions of IE a 64 and a 32. right now your using 64...switch to 32 and it will work.

Need to be an admin to install that. Make sure your profile is an admin or run as admin

Well, create a .net profile =) Sorry, had to go there... Go to msn or hotmail or ....and you should be able to create a profile there. I havent done this in a few years, but its simple.

My wireless card is on. I can connect to internet, it's just a pain in the a$$, and that's the big problem. But I might need a walk-through...

I am an admin, but I think I might have sorted out the problem by installing some games.

AFAIK I do have a profile- the error that comes up when I try to sign in is error 80072ee7, if that means anything.

All that said, thanks for the help.  Smile

I only have time for this one...

Start > all programs (or whatever its called now) you should have two icons, when mouse over one will say 64 the other will just say something like explore the internet blah blah. click on the one that doesnt say 64 =)

Its also usually the default icon for explorer next to the the start button =)

You shouldn't need to install DirectX as DirectX10 is built into the Vista OS.

Does this strike anyone as too damn difficult? Fine you're not an expert but why do the companies treat you so badly when you buy a high-priced technical tool and you can't even use it for the intended purposes without jumping through hoops. And you people keep going back.

Amazing.

Ok, wireless network part:

bottom right corner next to the clock is the icon for networks (2computers with the earth). Right click > connect to a network > either 1 double click on your AP > enter all your security garb or 2 right click on your ap > properties > enter all your security garb

Another route Start > connect to > and do either 1 or 2 from above.

As for FF, If you can get to the world via IE, then I would have to say your firewall is blocking you. adjust settings in your firewall.
Cool?

OK, I went back to the store and had the computer exchanged. Since yesterday it wouldn't recognize the mousepad or keyboard.
And now this computer actually works!

Thanks for the help.  Smile
