Maine is where the sun first comes up in the US. West Quoddy Head in the easternmost point in the lower 48..although I believe Alaska does have an island on the other side of the dateline. So the answer for lower 48 would be Maine, overall would be Alaska.

Attu is fairly far south so it doesn't have the "Midnight Sun".

Now that I looked a map it appears possibly Maine was the right answer in regards to the international date line : In the north, the date line swings to the east through Bering Strait and then west past the Aleutian Islands in order to keep Alaska (part of the United States) and Russia on opposite sides of the line and their territories due north and south of each other in concert with the date of the rest of each respective country.

So in theory one could still argue that Maine has the easternmost point..always good for a discussion on a slow day.  bigthumbsup

Wrong, time zones are the same, but the date line in fact crosses through some

Alaska, indeed, is the answer. But the position of the date line is really irrelevant when it comes to "east" vs. "west." Even though the date line is a bit gerrymandered, the actually meridian line is not.

Now, what makes this more interesting is that Alaska has the northernmost, westernmost, and easternmost points in the US!

No, you couldn't. The dateline may be shifted around to suit political needs, but the lat/lon coordinate system isn't. Several islands in the Aleutians have an E in their longitude, and that's what counts.

If we discount Alaska, and include territories, then the eastern most point is Point Udall on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

If I remember correctly, the plaque there claims that the marker is the easternmost point of the territorial United States. They must not have known about that pesky little Aleutian Island!

Semisopochnoi Island (179°46'E).

It's an uninhabited island just over the international date line.

It's not on the other side of the dateline. Forget the dateline. What counts is how close it is to the 180th meridian.

Doing a quick Google search, the answer appears to be Semisopochnoi Island.

http://www.american.info/geography/1...e_points_of_the_United_States.html

At 179°46'E, it means it's only 14 minutes from the meridian (that's minutes of arc, not minutes of time  Wink).

You can see the island on this map:

Oops, looks like you found it while I was typing my post.

Like I said, it's not over the international date line. It's still on the same side of the international date line as the rest of Alaska.

The international date line does not exactly follow the 180th meridian.

The date line swings around the Aleutian Islands so that the entire state of Alaska stays in the same day.

The small archipelago nation of Kiribati was divided by the international date line until in 1995 it decided to move it.

This map shows the international date line. It's the line in blue, as you can see, it is not completely straight and strays off of the 180th meridian in several places:

We were talking about the fact that diplomatic offices (embassies) are considered sovereign territory of the occupant country, therefore the US embassy in Suva would be the easternmost territory of the United States.

As for the REPUBLIC of the Fiji Islands being "British", I think the President of the REPUBLIC of the Fiji Islands would be surprised to hear that.

They have the union flag on their current flag as an historical reference. Honestly!
