What If My Passport Doesn't Come?

Mon Jun 25, 2007 2:08 pm

Hi Everyone,
I sent in my passport a few months ago and It was supposed to arrive the first week of this month. I am getting worried as to what to do if it does not arrive in time. I am traveling to St. Maarten through MIA in two weeks. Ive tried calling but the agency if virtually unreachable. Ive heard as long as you have proof of applying you are fine. Is this true? Thanks

I don't believe proof of applying will get you very far. Keep trying to contact them to find out the status, otherwise you'll need to reschedule your trip.

A quick search on any news website would provide a quick and easy result:

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/06/08/passports.ap/index.html

Quote:
Until the end of September, travelers will be allowed to fly without a passport if they present a State Department receipt, showing they had applied for a passport, and government-issued identification, such as a driver's license.

This is only for Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. Other existing passport requirements are unchanged.

I think you might be in even better luck - I read last week that the air requirement for the Caribbean was being temporarily suspended. If I were you though, I'd do some thorough research on that before you head off to the airport.

I also read that proof of applying was being accepted as well, however I think it took like 10 days or something to get evidence that you had applied....

In short, do your homework. If the passport doesn't come and you plan on using the old forms of ID (e.g. drivers' license and birth certificate), I would take whatever proof you can with you to the airport (e.g. print outs from the state department, etc.). This would just be a little insurance over an over-zealous CSR who isn't current on the rules.

Well, it sounds like you're just fine to get back into the US, but this link says that you must still meet the entry requirements for specific countries.

Under the Entry/Exit requirements for the Netherlands Antilles, it says, in accordance with the Netherlands Embassy, that a, "birth certificate, Gov't issued photo ID, and a DOS proof of application for a passport" will work.

Sounds like, as long as you have those, you'll be just fine.

Have fun, and you better write a Trip Report! With pictures!

Keep calling. You WILL get through eventually. One trick is to call then press no buttons. It seems to get you into the hold queue more often then pressing buttons and then getting told to call back later. During my two weeks of trying to get a "batch number" I actually got through 6 different times, and that was back when more people were calling.

But keep calling, be diligent and you WILL get through. Since you sent it in months ago, they should have it in the system. You can check this via their website. They will then be able to expedite your passport over the phone and you can get it within 2 days if need be. I was able to do just that, and got it with a whole 1 day to spare before my France trip. But it arrived!

Doing the "you don't really need it" thing has been getting people into trouble because you need other forms of ID that people don't have with them either. Since you still have 2 weeks, you should be able to get your passport and that is the best proof of ID for the trip.

So keep trying and good luck!

PS - I found at night on a friday was easy to get through. Maybe people would rather have a life than call the passport office at 10pm ET on a friday, but that's their loss if they need a passport...  Wink

I'm leaving for Mexico tomorrow, actually, and my passport didn't come until 2 days ago. A bit close, eh?

So I thought I wasn't going to have a passport. What I did was go onto the "travel.state.gov" website and clicked on "Click Here for Proof of Passport Application" and followed the steps. It was really pretty simple. I printed out my needed verification and was ready.

But as I was finishing all of that up, the mail truck came and delivered my passport. Nice and shiny and black. Yay.

Have fun on your trip!

If you are within 2 weeks of your trip, you may schedule an appointment to the PASSPORT AGENCY and get the passport on the same day. You wil pay 30 expedited fee.

The only problem is that the Passport Agency is a regional office, it may not be in your city or state.

I'm talking from experience since I've lost mine 4 times and had to get it in different places. I know for a fact that New York City, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles hav them, and there are other cities as well

You may have forgotten the most important "agency" of all: you local congressman/woman's office. This has worked very well for people I know, though not in regards to passports (no experience here). The staff at the office can contact the State Dept. to get things moving. Plus your displeasure with the long delay gets registered.

It can be quite effective. Don't wait.

That didn't work for me. Completely ignored me, actually. Not even a response. Probably because I didn't give them any money ever...

Yeah, I've had it work quite well with one of our senators, but the other senator not so much, and our state representative, forget it.
Good goes around!

Probably because you're in a solidly Democratic or Republican district. Those reps can ignore constituent service. Either that or your rep is a fool. This kind of service often costs a rep next to nothing (a volunteer or intern calls the relevant agency on behalf of the rep's office and makes them notice the forgotten task) and can generate real loyalty (and votes).

I just did a straight renewal sent in via Certified Mail.

No trace of the application, except my cashed check. USPS site showed no info on the mail, passport site would return nothing when I went to track my application.

The new one showed up just a couple days short of 3 months.

Despite some problems other have mentioned, I would call first the passport office -- perhaps they can give you a hint as to how long. If they can't call your congressman. And if they don't act for you, call again. And again . And again. remember, you're a voter and they WORK FOR YOU. If all else fails, you may have to call your airline and plead for mercy.......I doubt a regular agent on the phone will be authorized to change/etc w/o fee.....you may need a supervisor to be able to override the penalties. I would suggest this as last possible resort. But if you go to the passport website, you may be able to get some sor

If you can't get through to the passport office, call your congressman/senator and they will get in touch with the office for you. If you supplied an email address with your application, you will get an updated email within 24 hours advising the status of your application (usually just telling you they have got to your application and are working on it)

Yep...my current US passport was issued in Charleston, South Carolina of all places...I've never even been to South Carolina! My current passport was applied for in the western Chicago suburbs...weird, or so I always thought.

A little OT here, but I just applied for a renewal to my UK passport through the British Embassy in Washington. Talk about fast movers - they received my application last Monday, charged my Visa card for the renewal on Tuesday, and this morning I received my new passport. 5 business days from receipt of application to receiving my new passport; that's got to be some kind of record.

Wouldn't this be much simpler than making all these phone calls and such?
