Hit With A Golf Ball...Ouch!

Wed Jun 27, 2007 8:18 am

Two weeks ago I was out on the golf course and a guy shanked his ball and it nailed me right above my eye. After laying on the ground for a minute, I discovered there was blood everywhere. So I went to the hospital where I got a CAT Scan and 7 stitches and am all fine now except for a scar, which I'm trying to get rid of by using Mederma. Looking back, I'm just so lucky it didn't hit me directly in the eye, temple, nose, or mouth (it was very close). Anyway, it sucked and hurt like a B****. I've been on the golf course for nearly seven years and never had anything close to this happen before.

Does anyone else have a freak accident that happened to them?

That was you?!  duck   Wink

I did hit someone in the ass with a golfball on the driving range once. The thing is, they were standing ahead of the area where you were supposed to hit from. Of course I should have shot better, but if they stood in the correct place, there wouldn't have been a problem. Never been hit myself though.

Not me, but 3 years in succession when my parents were in the US visiting my brother we had

1) my father tore his achilles tendon a couple of weeks before my brother's wedding while playing with the step grandson to be.
2) my father was fishing, caught a sting ray and got spiked in the wrist as he tried to land it. Went very grey apparently.
3) my father was doing some diy and managed to drill through his hand between thumb and index finger. By this time the doctor was saying "not you again".

Never been hit by a golf ball.....by someone else hitting it. I was at the driving range and swung the club to hit the ball, and then it just came up and hit me in the face. This has happened more than once.  boggled   laughing

 Wow!  Wow!

I literally spat my coke out laughing from that!

As for me, I was learning to drive, I was at the parking lot of Fazolis, and Mom threw me the keys to drive home. So She got in, I pull the door open, and in a SECOND i was under the car on my left side. Apparantly there was Ice on the ground, and when I thrusted myself to open the door I lost frcition and just flew under the door. Mom heard me thud, and looked out the door , door was open but I was no where to be found, however my feet were sticking out like the evil witch in Wizard of Oz....  rotfl   rotfl   rotfl   rotfl   rotfl

I got up and got right into the car, and I noticed i fell right in front of the entire restaurent in front of an open window where everyone could see......

My mom stifling her laughter goes "did you just fall?"

I said "you....shut...it...now"

I've never been hit hard with a golf ball before, but I've had a ton of close calls, balls landing within 3 feet of me. I've been lucky I guess.

However, on the flip side, I did hit another person with a golf ball, in the nards no less, on the freaking practice green. I was practicing out of the bunker towards the green and behind the green was a hill that people go over to the parking lot. I sculled one out of the sand and at the same time a fellow was coming from the parking lot and right at the top of the hill it hit him right in the nuts. Not only did I feel bad for doing it, it occured right before a HS golf match against our rival school, so I didn't hear the end of it for a long time.

I was in the backyard playing cricket with my brother and he bowled the ball, I took a swing at it, missed the ball which went on and hit me on the toe. The bat swung around and whacked myself in the head and lost my balance and fell on the stumps.

I got hit by a flying hockey puck on the inside of my thigh once. Didn't really hurt much, but left a bruise. A little higher and it would have been trouble, though.

I've had some near misses on the golf course before (and once from a foul ball at a Red's game) but fortunately, no direct hits.

lol I have not been hit but the driver of my cart was hit pretty damn hard by my own group.

We had just finished the first tee, just putted and just got into our cart. From about 200+ yards back with a very slight dogleg to the left is the green. The cart path is a circle at this point and is head on from the fairway. He just leaned forward and suffered a direct hit to the shoulder. If he hadn't leaned forward at that exact moment, I would have taken the hit to the skull.

Imagine being hit at full throttle from a perfectly hit 3 wood. Ya, he hurt. I laughed. We drank. Life is good.

Not quite an accident, but damn close!

I was at my son's Track/field practice for his school. They were throwing the discus (i think thats how you spell it?) back and forth while i sat in the stands and tried to figure out my new camera. So eventually i heard someone scream "Look out!" and i just put my head in my knees......the thing flew about 2 inches over my head from what ive heard  scared

I have a similar golfing story, but it wasn't myself who got hit...

I used to go golfing on a 9 hole course with my old next door neighbour before he passed away when i was a kid.. I used a driver and hit my first ball and messed it up totally, he took his shot then started walking down the fairway... I took another shot with my driver whilst he wasn't looking.. and smack, right in the back of the legs....

Needless to say he didn't ever go in front of me again..  covereyes   innocent

Me, my ex, and her father were putting when suddenly she gets dropped. Never heard/saw it coming. Right between the shoulder blades. Actually gives her pain to this day, but all things considered, it could have been worse as it could have literally done spinal damage.
The topper was the bastard that hit the ball walks up to the hill above our green (he could not see us from where he hit it) and yells "Anyone see a ball come this way??!!", as she is lying face down on the green sobbing, almost screaming.

Not a personal experience but once in rounders (oh what a fun sport) my friend was batting at the time and was having an argument with the bowler and the bowler decided to say something really harsh (while ago so i don't remember) and everyone was a bit "OOOH cussss" about it, and when my friend swung for the ball she accidentally hit the bowler in the face, with the rounders ball, lucky for her it was only a tennis ball but ahhhhh was that a good sight.

Unluckily, the bowler's mates have been out for my friend ever since...
Fun P.E. lessons.

Fortunately, i've never experienced anything as much as a golf ball.

I've managed to hit my brother with a golf ball before. He was walking up to the green and I was fairly close by, didn't catch it quite right and it headed right for him. I called 'Fore!' and he put he crouched down, however the ball hit him in the back. Fortunately it was only a fairly lightly hit chip shot so didn't hurt.

We did almost get hit once though, was playing again with my brother at the course where we were members. A fairly prestigious course and the Junior section were rather looked down upon by the rather snooty senior members. It was late on summers evening and we hadn't seen anyone behind us for a while. We got to a Par 3 and decided to hit a couple of practice putts on the green as our Junior Open was the following morning. We hear some old git shout 'Fore!' so hit the deck and a ball lands just a few feet away. I was tempted to pick the ball up and throw it in the woods. We watch the guy putt out from the next tee and wait to confront him. He decided to shout at us telling we were holding up his group and that we should get a move on. Apart from a couple of practice putts which took about 30 seconds maximum we were completely playing to the rules. Had we known there was a party behind us we'd never have done some practicing. Either way, I told this individual what I thought of him, something he certainly wasn't expecting and he then threatened to report me. I refused to tell him who I was, even though I had nothing to hide I knew anyone of authority would side with this idiot, purely because I was a junior....*sigh*

Funniest golf story though....the first tee at the aforementioned club was fairly close to the clubhouse and the corresponding car park with a row of trees shielding a direct view. Hit a bad slice off the first tee and you are out of bounds, on the practice green or in the car park. One young guy had driven to play our course, and hit a wild slice off the first. It was heading for the car park when he hud a car alarm going off. He headed over to take a look and noticed it was his own car. Of all the places his ball could have ended up he managed to break the windscreen of his OWN car!  rotfl

*yawn* To be pednatic I didn't even play by USGA rules since this was in England. Anyways, as I mentioned it was a late summer evening, hadn't seen anybody anywhere for any of the eight holes to date...until we almost get hit round the head with a ball!

The rules you quote are bunk in this case since there was no group ahead of us to keep up with, nor a group behind to hold up...If there had been groups we noticed that were close we wouldn't have hit even a quick practice putt. Either way I don't think hitting a ball into the middle of a playing group is the best way to go about business! If hitting a practice putt when nobody was around is so evil and wrong I'd argue that starting your round on the 9th tee is jumping ahead of people on the previous eight holes.

May I ask, in late evening and at quiet times have you never thrown down a ball and taken a quick swing?...There is a time and a place for rules regarding playing pace, an empty golf course late one evening is not it.

For a one time occurrence? Come on! There have been plenty of times where I'll catch up to a group that's been taking their time and hitting extra practice shots or just moseying but as soon as they see they have someone behind them, they stop with the extra practice shots and/or pick up their pace of play and sometimes I never see them again. It becomes on problem when they realize they have someone behind them and don't pick up the pace or let the group behind play through.

I mean, I do have my pet peeves about slow play out there. My personal favorite is the guy who hits the ball 100 yards off the tee and still feels the need to wait for the group in front to clear the green 300 yards away. Um, you're not going to get it there.....hit the damn ball. Or the foursome in carts who all ride to player A's ball, watch him hit, then to Player B, then to Player C and then finally to Player D, often driving backwards to get to another player's ball.

Quoting Fbgdavidson (Reply 25):

When my mom and dad were in Hawaii on their honeymoon, they had a group behind them who was constantly hitting into them throughout the round. My dad was rather pissed since he and my mom were waiting on a group (or groups) in front of them. So on the 18th hole, which had a blind approach shot into the green, the guy hit up and his ball landed on the green while my parents were finishing out. My dad took the ball and placed it under the lip of the trap and really smashed it down into the sand.

When the guy came up looking for his ball, my dad just said "Yea, it took a really bad kick and ended up in that trap over there under the lip."

My 7th grade science teacher put someone's eye out with an errant shot on the golf course.

I've had the back of my cart hit by someone who flew one over the green. Also had a ball fly right in front of the cart perpendicular to the direction I was going. I saw it fly past. The guy with me didn't. It was at head level. If we were 1/4 of a second faster...

Sure....to make the story short, I was using a house ball since I was too lazy and didn't have my ball with me. So, I grabbed a very light ball but one problem, the holes were kinda tight on me, so I launched that sucker so hard, I fell and slipped and was like "WTF, where's the ball? and I heard a loud crack and felt an intense pain on my head. The ball's trajectory went up and it hit the ceiling and came back down. I got up, walked back, blood was rushing all over the floor, about to pass out until someone grabbed me and called 911. I never did pass out, I was conscious the whole time, laughing and joking about it until I was on the stretcher and rushed to the Naval hospital. I was released 2 hours later with 7 stitches and with a concussion. Now, four months later, I'm still bowling in the upper 100s to low 200s with a new 15-lb ball.

I find it ironic that you're calling me out on the 'disciplined, courtesy and sportmanship' rule for hitting an innocent practice putt when some moron almost put me in hospital because he was being an impatient moron! tell me now, which category does hitting a ball into a group of players ahead fall into? Disciplined manner? not quite.....courtesy? I think not. Sportmanship? Nope.  Yeah sure

If this guy had such a problem with me taking an innocent 30 second practice putt when he decided to cut straight to the 9th hole and with no warning hits a ball right at us then he should have followed the rules you preach and questioned me on the 10th tee.

Plenty of cricketing injuries. I was routinely taking a thorw from the boundary when first slip decided that the wicketkeeper (me) clearly needed some help and tried to catch it, instead diverting it straight on to my head, where lots of blood promptly flowed and I went off to have 8 stitches in the cut.

I've seen a few nastier ones though. One opponent ducking in to a bouncer and seeing the whole of one side of his face caved in as his cheekbone shattered.  vomit
