Cheerleaders Killed In ROC

Fri Jun 29, 2007 12:58 am

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/28/teens.crash.ap/index.html

I know the girls went to the same highschool KROC went to. And where a friend of mine from college went.

Very sad stuff, a week after graduation too.

I'm hoping our friends from ROC (Mark and Mike) were not directly effected by this.

As tragic as this is, I really have to wonder: why is this national news? My heart goes out to them, but you know what? Four girls were tragically killed about a mile from my house this month under similar circumstances - the day after graduation.

It's sad when it happens, for sure. A lot of tears were drawn when it happened here. But is it national news? I think not.

Absolutely terrible tragedy. However, I don't get why it is national news either? Unless one of the families has a bit of  dollarsign  and is trying to milk the situation, I am confused.

Wow, how totally heartless! If something like that is too boring to make national news I would hate to think what does actually make the national news! Must be one hell of a violant country you live in - makes me glad I'm on the right side of the Atlantic!

The mass media thinks it is more intersting that what is going on in Congress. The mass media does not want to report on boring procedural news in government. The mass media thinks we should hear about killing and tragedy instead of what the government is doing or what manufacturers are doing. Just my opinion.

My heart goes out to the families. There are too many things like this that happen this time of year. This should be a happy time with graduations and weddings and so forth. It is a shame these celebrations are marred by tragedy.

Furthermore, I would like to continue with:

Quoting EK20 (Reply 3):
If something like that is too boring to make national news I would hate to think what does actually make the national news!
Who ever said anything about it being boring...except for you? Five teenage deaths is terrible, for the second time. But why exactly do 300 million other people need to know about it? What should be making the national news, contrary to your sideways beliefs, are the fact that Bush has refused the subpoenas, the Supreme Court rulings, and things that actually effect the nation as a whole.

Quoting EK20 (Reply 3):
Must be one hell of a violant country you live in - makes me glad I'm on the right side of the Atlantic!
Coming from the side of the Atlantic that has Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea? Right. And how you equate five girls dying in a car crash with violence is beyond me.

Me thinks you have a chip on your shoulder for the US.

Quoting EK20 (Reply 3):
Oh sorry I forgot...you would rather hear about Paris Hilton....
Again, you are the only one who brought that up, so maybe those are your inner concerns?

Edited for spelling

Five teenagers in one vehicle heading for a party weekend (what were the parents thinking?) = inexperienced driver; impatient driver; inattentive driver combined is nothing more than a recipe for disaster. (Prom weekend and graduation is the deadliest time period for young adults).

It really shouldn't be..hopefully it will make parents think twice before allowing their children to get into this situation.

This is tragic news, however I have to wonder why is is such a story on a large scale. As mentioned, things like this unfortunately happen all the time.

As for the local take, I haven't been effected in anyway by this, other than the fact as AA61hvy said, these girls had just graduated from the same school I went too. As far as other things like a cause...we will probably never know, but a car full of freshly graduated teens on the way to a cottage for a weekend or whatever one can think DUI might be involved, however through the back channels I have heard that the driver was talking on her cell phone (to the car full of people (friends) behind them as well, and this is what many believe lead to the accident.

I doubt this is the case. How in the name of all that is holy does the families "milk" or benefit from their daughter dying in a head on crash?

It is the MEDIA that spins these things and gives them the national press. Not the parents.

It is of course speculation. But, attention from the media. Possibly write a book or two. Maybe create an orginization. There has to be a reason this story got attention that we don't know about because this is not a national incident, nor is it that uncommon.

It is very sad news, though to be honest would it be reported to such an extent if the occupants had not just graduated and if they were not cheerleaders, i.e. attractive girls. Think Aruba and Ms. Holloway.

Huh?

National news is not "interesting news", but rather news that is important to the nation. The war, the economy, national sports, strange and unusual events, and yes celebrities (if they are nationally known) all make national news.

No, the media played this nationally to exploit the fact that humans cannot turn away from a fire, a death, a death of a girl, a death of a white girl, a death of a pretty girl, or any gruesome death.

SOOOOO EK20, don't get upset with me because I question the nationality of this news -- get upset with the media who is exploiting you and these victims for your inability to turn off the scenes of a fiery gruesome death of pretty white girls.

It wasn't even just 5 girls going for the party it was 9 in 2 vehicles off to some vacation home, 5 in the one vehicle in the crash and 4 in the other car. What runs through my mind is where were the parents and how could they not see such a bad recipe for disaster. None of the articles even suspect DUI, which to me makes me think this is more of a media sypathy train for a bunch of poor cheer leaders (Not that it isn't sad). Under normal circumstances all the clues fit to that conclusion whether right or not, but a lot of evidence is coming from the 4 friends in the other car who are pointing to the van possible speeding up to avoid being passed, despite this evidence, the police found the driver of the van and issued no ticket in this incident. Although they do believe she oversteered to the right and possible then went left to correct it contributed, which could be plausible especially if she was distracted on the phone (or texting) with friends and music in the backround. As Sad as this case is this stuff happens all the time during this time of year all around the US, why this case specifically is getting so much attention is beyond me.

I lost a cousin to a similar accident 4 years ago a week after prom, as sad and shocking as it is, it happens, and the kids and parents themselves are really left to blame if we must put a finger to it.

Cheers!

Gotta remember the news has their own agenda. They hand pick stories.

Reminds me of an expose a Dallas news station did on the approach of DAL aircraft and how it could potentially could affect planes departing DFW-they hand pick these stories

I went to school with a kid who was kid the in a similar fashion, though he was running from the cops and died the same way the cheerleaders did, it did not make Dallas news at all.

Honestly crap like the above listed is why I have absolutely no respect for most media outlets

Edit: I respect some of the hot women news anchors  Smile

Some things make headlines, sometimes the same thing doesn't the next day. On a slow newsday anything can become big, or sometimes chance decides who will write about a story. This thing even made headlines over here in our biggest newspaper.

White, young, female, cheerleaders. explosion. Probably rich to boot. Heck, if you were to thow in one of them sleeping with a teacher and you would have all of the elements for any nightly lead story.

Was this story shown on TV? If it wasn't it cannot be considered national news. It was in the section of CNN devoted to news around the US. Similar to the page in the USA Today newspaper that has a news brief for each state.

Perhaps it has something to do with the demographics?

How is Fairport as a whole? Is it pretty upper crust?

Because it is our sick society that thrives on sad, death, wreaking havoc news on personal lives that we feed on.

It's absolutely pathetic. It's the same type of crap that keeps Paris in the limelight.

Fairport/Perinton (Village of Fairport, Town of Perinton it all gets referred to as Fairport) is a great place to live. A couple years back, it was selected one of hte top 100 best places to live. There is a growing population in the community that have deep pockets, but there are plenty of plain ole Middle Class Citizens here as well as some not so middle class. Pittsford/Mendon is the upper crust in this area, although Fairport is gaining ground.

Also, it has been said that the driver of the crashed SUV was busy texting the car that was behind them. Opps. Guess thats why one should pay attention to the road. The "I'ma cheerleader and popular" thing doesn't protect them from doing dumb shit.

what I still don't get is why you'd text the person behind you, rather than simply just damn calling them? I see tons of kids text while driving, why can't they just call their friends like a normal person?

Texting while passing a car and heading straight for a semi? Not a great idea. Still, my condolences go out to their families.

That's a big concern for a lot of parents. The kids' heads are not there and they think they are invincible. I had the same mindset when I was their age.

Nick, you should know by now that the media won't hype up a story like this unless there is something behind it that we don't all know about yet.

I'd like to wait to hear all the information before I jump to any conclusions as to why the media decided to blow this story up. I wouldn't be suprised if one of the parties involved was asleep at the wheel, on drugs, drunk, etc. And I'm not saying it was the girls in the SUV, before someone jumps me saying that...

I think the article mentioned this was during graduation week. I would bet just about anything the driver of the SUV was drunk or high. I have never received, or sent a text message so important I missed the fact I was on the wrong side of the road. It seems none of the other 4 people in the SUV brought it to the drivers attention either. The cheerleaders at my high school weren't *THAT* dumb.

When I first heard about the story I said either drugs/alcohol or cell phone were in the middle of all of this. So far it looks as if it was indeed cell phone related as I mentioned earlier. As for the mishap...any of us (including myself) know that keeping your car straight while sending text messages isn't the easist of tasks. Put someone driving an SUV full of 4 other just graduated girls on on their way to a cottage on one of the Finger Lakes texting the vehicle behind her full of more friends and problems will happen. The road they were on was 55mph. I'm willing ot bet they were going faster than that, seeing as she had just passed on vehicle. All of this while texting. She swings over in her own lane but not paying attention drifts or pulls the car back into the oncoming lane and good night now. Not saying it went down this way, but its pretty easy to see how it could. And if you think the 4 other chicks in the SUV were paying attention to the road and not fucking around or having fun or whatever...I got some land I would like to sell you.

Well it makes the most sense and she doesn't have to be intoxicated, as the friends watched her go back after passing but the swerve left, so it's possible she was texting then and over corrected as she got back in the lane, making her go left into oncoming traffic.
