Sounds like a fifteen year old fumbling through a line out of one of those "teach yourself bass" books on his Squire P-bass. I didn't know Boss made a "Supermud" pedal....

Wrong. The bass player was not 50 years old, It's not a Squire P-bass, and it's the wrong pedal.

And he was certainly not fumbling..

The speakers on my computer here at work really suck. I'll give this a listen when I get home. The JBLs I have on my home computer are much better.
It sounds like the bass player is using a chorus effect. It's certainly not a Fender P-bass or Rickenbacker.
It could be a Stingray but again, the speakers I have here at work aren't good and very quite.

I'll give this a try:

- Song title = Not sure, just sounds familiar
- Author = Peter Gabriel
- Bass player = I'm gonna hazard a guess at Tony Levin
- Bass used for this recording = it's an EUB. You can tell from the slight string slap you can hear.
- Effect used for this recording = Flanger.

Considering he's played on more recordings than God, that's not a bad guess!

Methinks Alphafloor is self-glossing, and was just waiting to have someone compare him to Tony Levin (I once did in the past, IIRC).  Wink

If it's a self gloss, I would have hoped he would pick a more complex bass line than this. It's child's play compared to some of the stuff Levin does.

Speaking of great bass players, I saw Abe Laboriel play a couple of days ago...the line up was Abe Laboriel, Paul Jackson Jr, Sheila E, Kirk Whalum, and Tom Brooks. It was completely phenomenal.

I also caught Pino Palladino playing with The Who a few months ago. There's another great bass player who's played on a shed load of records.

Talk about some incredible name dropping!  yes
Seriously!  Wow!
Those are some top notch musicians!

I was first turned on to Abe Laboriel with his playing on David Shire's 'Manhattan Skyline' on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Then I realized he had played as a session musician on many hits throughout the 1980s.

I saw Pino Palladino with Tho Who just weeks after John Entwistle died.

Another great bass player to check out is Jimmy Haslip. He played with one of the best musical artist to ever grace planet earth........Gino Vannelli.

I figured out how to play this on my bass. I've funked it up a bit. I just need to figure out how to plug in to the computer and download it in to a media player so you can hear.

Well, they couldn't just get a run of the mill player to replace the Ox, could they? Palladino talks about how he had to learn all Entwistle's runs and having to go back over and again to different bits, thinking to himself "what the hell is doing? How does he DO that?".

Get a 1/4'' to 1/8'' adaptor and just plug the bass into the line in on your soundcard. I've done that with my guitar quite a few times.

You know, I would rank Entwistle (correct spelling this time) right up there with any R&R bass player, but that stuff was, frankly, down-right sloppy. The melody bits were quite nice, but the two-handed hammer-ons and all those histrionics were really...not so good; notes were indistinguishable, kinda like Joe Satriani on crack.

Speaking as a bass player since 1980 (and yes, I've done it professionally).

Then I'd somehow upload it to RealPlayer or something?

No I'm certainly not. Long time ago after a gig a drunk guy came over me and told me I played like Levin, I was certainly glad to hear that but the guy was completely drunk and of course I'm far from TL playing style. However I still remember that praise   With musician friends we like to challenge each other with this kind of quizz, I merely wanted to do the same here

Considering almost all notorious bass players of anet have already replied in this thread, this is the result:

- Song title : "Shock the Monkey"
- Author : Peter Gabriel (Bravo IFE!)
- Bass player : Tony Levin ! (re-Bravo IFE!)
- Bass used for this recording : Chapman Stick (yeah I know, it was a trap   )
- Effect used for this recording : Chorus or Flanger as sugested by IFE (However I'm not 100% sure on that one   )

This bass line record was made by Tony Levin himself (The simple line, the best!), it was separated from the rest of the original track...

You can check the original and hear "Shock the Monkey" as recorded by following this link :

http://realworldremixed.com/download.php

(scroll down until the "shock the monkey" section and click play to hear it !)

Thanks everybody to have participated, Superfly for his interesting links and Banco for the video (nice ! ).
The winner is IFEmaster of course !!

Cheers,
Alejandro

Well, you would record with a program like Audacity, then upload the .wav file to someplace online.

Well I came close.
The links aren't the best material of Gino Vannelli but an idea of how Jimmy Haslip sounded with his recordings with Gino and his brothers.
There is a killer bass solo on the track 'Brother To Brother' but it's not in the clips from that website. The live versions on YouTube doesn't have Jimmy Haslip so his bass solo is substituted by a drum solo.   Sad
