Illinois State Cops, Unbelievable Luck Yet Again!

Sat Jun 30, 2007 8:20 am

So I am going down I-90 westwards from O'Hare where I dropped my friend at the airport. I stop at the O'Hare toll, pay my 80c (I swapped my I-PASS for a Florida E-Pass/Sunpass) and start leisurely making my way up to 92mph for my 10 mile drive to Schaumburg.

Alas, I get to about 88mph on the left lane about 2 miles past the toll and I see a Illinois State Police trooper in his Crown Vic with his lights on. I think to myself, great 2 yrs of not getting a ticket down the drain, along with a 2x $95 tickets + $30 for school. Cop walks out, asks me whats the rush...I reply I dont have an excuse and I know I was speeding and weaving through traffic. I whip out my license and insurance card and he says "I didnt have my radar on so I didnt get how fast you were going but Ill let you choose and go easy on you and youre being honest with me, ill either write you a speeding ticket for 1-20mph over or following too close." I say "Ok, same fine so just give me the following too close." I think...damn a nice cop, he could have screwed me in for $200 in tickets and a mandatory court appearance + a ticket for having illegal window tint. He asks me if I have a bond card, so I tell him Ive got my AAA card so he takes it and my insurance card. By this time im looking like a douche on the E-Lane of I-90 (anyone knows that in Chicago its extremely hard being pulled over for speeding because traffic often moves in excess of 80mph.) So the officer goes back into his car...sits down for all of 5 seconds then hes going back with my documents...im thinking oh crap now what.

Alas! he says "Ive got an accident up ahead, stop cutting people off and get outta here."  bigthumbsup  Unbelievable luck I think and I drive off to realize this is the 5th time ive been pulled over in Illinois/Florida and not gotten a ticket. I knock on wood now and celebrate another great chapter in my run ins with the police forces of America!

I was back in that Grid Square last week - was there for 10 days . . . staying at my Mom's place in Waukegan/brother's place in Kenosha.

Didn't even think to give you a shout. My bad.

You're right about the interstate speeds there. We took a limo down to Navy Pier, and that guy didn't bat an eye at 80+ with that big ass Lincoln. And people were blowing by us like we were parked.

Also drove on I-80, 88 and 39 while out that way - I moved along with traffic most times. I-39 was a treat, morons in central Illinois tend to go side by side at 65mph . . .  irked

Speaking of fines, did you see what going to happen in Virginia starting July 1st. Example given from the Washington Post doing 20 mph over the limit on the beltway which is classified as reckless the fine is $200 fine plus a civil fine of $1050 from the state, payable in three easy installments. DUI is a $300 fine and another $2250 from the state. In short if you're a bad driver and resident in Virginia now the time to correct one driving behavior.

I do believe I owe you brews from not making it to Vegas. Alas, I was in Northern Minnesota (Gunflint Tr. and BWCA area) fishing for 8 days. Im most disappointed you said nothing.

Central Illinois? I do believe you mean Southern Illinois (Anything south of Joliet)...yea they are worthless...I hate them almost as Wisconsin State cops hate FIBs (****** Illinois Bastards)  Big grin

Im just glad I wasnt pulled over by an ISP Intrepid...thats just shamefull to get pulled over by that POS.

20mph is reckless? Oh my..its bad enough that you cant have a radar detector.

I think Virginia and all of America should adopt the policy in Poland:

http://www.antyradary.phi.pl/mapa_fotoradarow/

It shows all the current photo cameras and speed traps around the country. By law cops must publish these.  Silly

Lucky bastard...I've only been pulled over once (knock on wood) in Iowa County, Iowa and got a ticket...but the guy was so cool, he gave me a ticket for only going 6-10 over when I was really going 22 over. Saved me a ton.

A nice one, coincidentally ive never been pulled over outside of IL and FL. However I have been pulled over by the following:

Illinois State Police
Schaumburg Police
Hoffman Estates Police
Palatine Police
Schiller Park Police
Illinois DNR
Cook County Sheriffs Department
Orland Park Police
Florida State Police
Ormond Beach Police
Daytona Beach Police
Port Orange Police
Florida State Wildlife Police
Volusia County Sheriff
Seminole County Sheriff

Come to think of it, that is a rather long list..in 6 years.

At least in Georgia the cops can't pull you over with radar/ laser until you have exceeded the speed limit by more than 10 mph. And any speeding ticket of 14mph or less stays off your driving record so the insurance companies and employers will never know about it.

Good to see the guy wasn't badge heavy.

I was only pulled once by ISP once all my years while living in the Chicago-'burbs....one of my headlights was burnt.....the guy left me off the hook..

The most tickets IIRC I got was in Skokie (that's not where I lived, but grew up a few blocks away from there)...bloody got too many tickets there and had to go to court/driving school all the time... cry

Chicago coppers...I think I got just one or two tickets from them...but nothing majour really.

Where I live now, a good friend of mine is a cop here and he'd bloody give his own mamma a speeding ticket... spin

You got pulled over by Game and Fish? were you poaching or did you take a lobster out of season? Smile

my nephew was a Game and Fish Officer(now he's a deputy sheriff). He drove a F-150 and would pull people all the time. Most people would tell him"you arent a cop, you have no right to pull me over". He would point to the words on his truck--STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER-- and say "tell it to the Judge, sign here please".

Oh yeah, central northern Illinois is for sure. Whenever I drive to go visit my family in Chicago from here in Kansas where I'm living, I have to end up on I-88 which meets up with lovely I-39 in Rochelle. Coincidentally, I also did my first solo on a Cessna 152 from DuPage Airport to Rochelle and back (look for the tiny airport just on the south side of I-88, just to the west of I-39 I believe...if you blink, you'll miss it).

Spitting from Rockford northwords will actually result in your spit stopping on a tollbooth. Dont you just love the sign when you enter IL from WI on I-90. "The Illinois Tollways welcomes you" might as well add: "Welcome to IL, where your wallet will now be raped and you will encounter the crappiest stretch of I90 in the country."

It was over in Holy Hill (Daytona ghetto suburb) on Nova rd. going towards Ormond Beach. I was weaving through traffic going 70 in a 40. Whilist weaving through traffic I cut off a brand new black Ford Explorer. That bastard immediately put his lights on near his rearview mirror and pulled me over and waved at me his Wildlife Police State Badge. Man he was pissed off. He could have taken me to the slammer easily. Oh yea, my now idle 2001 Chevy Blazer had double registered IL plates at the DMV here after it was titled and re-titled and then re-titled again between me and my dad. What does this mean? The guy thought the car was stolen, I had to put my hands on the hood as he checked my registration against the VIN on the side of the drivers door. In the end he let me go after I made up some BS excuse I had to take a test. I think due part in it that I had my US Border Patrol hat and he was an ex-Border Patrol officer as he told me after he let me go and we talked for 5 mins...

I recommend you get the Beltronics Vector 995 for a $250USD budget in Ameirca (Except VA/DC). One plus side is its got Ku band, so if you decide you want to speed on another continent (just like me) you are protected..infact you should always use protection.

However my Canadian friend, to you and my Virginia and DC friends I recommend the Beltronics Pro RX65. It has Ku band and the most important part a VG2 radar detector detector that your fellow mountees use. That way you wont get raped for using a radar detector, like I said, always use protection. My brother has this one in his car, it is a damn nice anti-ANCflyer unit.

Well you will notice a definite step up to the Beltronics. I once had a cop pull me over and tell me radar detectors are worthless and never save you...what a ridiculous statement that was that I remember it to this day.

The cop said " You slowed, and had your turn signal on, you just didnt stop." Skokie had my license. I only got my license back on Wednesday.

I can't believe that you actually kept track of your pullovers! Are you trying for the Guinness Book?

Since 1977, I've driven over three million miles, mostly in the New York metro area in my limo business, with only one ticket (1979, while diving to Vermont on vacation) on my record. I can't remember the last time I was pulled over, and I'm not one to observe speed limits, but I make sure I have at least a three second interval between me and the vehicle in front.

Incidentally, all police in New Jersey are prohibited from using a laser gun, due to their inherent inaccuracy. When a group of motorists challenged their use several years ago, the judge found that the device had the walls of his court room going 3 mph, and his bench going 1 mph, no matter how much the manufacturer tweaked them. Even with subsequent tests, the use of these things is still prohibited in the great Garden State. Anybody not in NJ getting any ideas for challenging the use of lasers????  stirthepot

The most tickets IIRC I got was in Skokie (that's not where I lived, but grew up a few blocks away from there)...bloody got too many tickets

In May, Park Ridge ticketed me for doing a left turn from the right lane. (Prospect and Touhy) totally my bad at 1am on a saturday. The cop said, " I'm not ticketing you for speeding or blowing the yellow light, I'm ticketing you for the turn you made." Park Ridge got my bond card.

..OUCH...at least you had online traffic school...the last time I went to traffic school in the 1990's, I had to go to the "Masters Courses" for bloody 8 hours.. spin ....

Fortunately, as I've gotten older, I've mellowed out quite a bit...and here in California, I'm quite careful, especially when it comes to speeding......just not worth it to save a few minutes.. no

You do realize that you can go to court where your license is, go to the traffic school counter, pay your fine and get your license back. From the time you get it taken away to the time you can get it back it takes 4-5 days, not 2 months.

I know...had I saw he was one of them I wouldnt have cut him off. I didnt suspect it was a cop...they dont usually drive around Daytona area in black Ford Explorers without state plates.

I want to leave a kudos to Florida btw, they seem to have ridiculously high speed limits compared to Illinois on streets. Ive seen limits of 40mph in FL whereas that would have been a 25mph zone in IL.

To do that, you should just arrest everyone on the interstate system in every city in America. No way in hell am I or anyone else going to drive in a 45mph work zone that stretches for miles for no apparent reason because the IDOT is too lazy to do anything, and no way in hell am I going to drive 55mph because Ill probably get killed myself for it.

There's a difference between using common sense when driving and, as in your case, taking it upon yourself to determine when it is or is not OK to break the law. In another post, you referred to using carpool lanes as your own passing lane (or words to that effect). I believe you said something like you use them to zip around traffic and then merge back into the regular traffic lanes. That is quite a bit different than failing to drive 55 for fear of getting killed. It's unfortunate but what myself, AirCop, ANCFlyer and any other LEOs here have over you is the fact that we've seen the end result of guys who drive like you. What's even more maddening is, 90% of the time, it's the guy who was driving like an asshole who walks away unscathed from the carnage they've caused. You want to drive like an ass and kill yourself, so be it, but it rarely works out that way. And for you to actually brag about your ridiculously asinine driving habits is appalling. If you want to pretend you're an Indy driver, that's fine; there are plenty of raceways you can rent to practice your fine driving skills. But when you're using public roadways as your own little Indianapolis 500, you're just another traffic fatality waiting to happen.

Carpool lanes? Ive used them before in Atlanta and Nashville...I admit that. Different? Hardly. I think what is different is that people dont have any lane etiquette when it actually comes to driving on an interstate.

My driving seems like its the ahole way because 99% of drivers here dont have a jack crack clue about how to actually drive, Yes...I sure as hell will make that assumption. Not only are people almost NEVER pulled over for driving on the left lane slow, no one ever gives a crock. Just drive down any interstate in America and within 1-2 miles some idiot in his loaded Grand Caravan driving on his vacation to Florida has to drive on the left. Not counting the fact that passing on the right should be illegal (something I avoid at almost all costs).

I love the traffic fatality pep talk...might work if I was born in Louisville and never drove anywhere else, it was really motivating in my first and only traffic school I attended in English. Thankfully they spare that BS when i switched over, we just like to talk about why the US has one of the lowest speed limits, the best roads, why everyone drives slow and it has one of the highest traffic accident ratios in the world. A really intriguing topic, the answer I believe is that 99% of American drivers should have their license taken away. What is more intriguing is that the USA has the same death rate per 100,000 people as Poland...except we have no doubt the most dangerous road system in the world, almost no highways and drivers that do stuff on the road that would make you crap your pants as a cop.

Ill continue to drive fast, Germans, Italians and others seem to be doing that...and they apparently drive 2x safer than idiots in this country. 2.5x if you want to count the UK at 70mph. Please spare me that American safety first that slowing down will save my life. As far as driving like an ahole, I can assure you that I dont go flying across 5 lanes in traffic, unlike most Americans I even personally follow the .00 even though I am above 21. I never even have 1 beer and drive after. Something that not alot of people can claim that drink here.

On the bad side, ive been in a few crashes myself with friends...ploughed into a parked van once, 2 times hit a tree on 2 different occasions and had friends die from accidents.

First of all, I don't know what different state laws are regarding driving in the left lane, but in BC it is illegal, and even if it isn't illegal, it's pretty well common sense. What purpose does it serve to drive mile upon mile in the left lane? Now, here's the problem, our RCMP is going after "aggresive" driving behaviour this weekend, and I'm sure that they'll be looking for people who pass on the right or tailgating people insisting staying in the left lane because this is "aggresive" driving. Hey, officer, here's a thought....ticket the idiot who will not budge into the right lane where he is, by law, supposed to be driving. If the left lane driver was doing as the law requires him to do, you wouldn't have someone tailgating, passing on the right or weaving in and out of traffic then would you?

Speed and aggresive driving doesn't cause accidents or kill people, stupidy and lack of education in regards to driving and traffic laws do.

Lol LOT767 that's a lot of different PDs  Smile.

Seeing as how I also live in Chicagoland, I'll list who I've been stopped by too lol:

Chicago Police
Schaumburg Police
Wheeling Police
Riverwoods Police
Lake County Sheriff
Lincolnshire Police
Buffalo Grove Police
Round Lake Police
Department of Revenue
Vernon Hills Police

Out of all that, 10 tickets, 4 traffic schools. Oh and I've been pulled over twice in one day(Lake County and then Lincolnshire). I've also received two tickets in one day(this is seperate from the pulled over twice in one day scenario lol).

But I've also had my share of good luck. Yes I was being kinda stupid late one night around 2AM messing around with a friend on the highway. We were going about 120, when we pass a ISP trooper driving in the middle lane. Our radars didn;t go off. We pass him, he turns on his lights...and turns them off after 3 seconds. I guess we were going too fast!?!

A second time was when I got pulled over for not using my turn signal. He wanted to search my car, the problem was that I had beer in the trunk since we were on the way to a friend's birthday. I am 19, so obviously I can't be having it. I let him search the car and tell him about the beer beforehand. He searches, takes the beer and lets me go, no ticket for anything.

Oh and I use a Valentine V1 radar.

Never heard of anyone personally getting this, never seen anyone get pulled over for this. Even whats more attrocious is a cop will follow a slow car on the left lane and will just wait 5 mins until he moves over. No discipline.

Now tell me my dear friend, whos more dangerous? Me, who drives pretty fast and has NEVER even caused an accident, or the millions and millions of Americans and Canadians who yack on their cell phones or eat and never get pulled over and have no road etiquette. I know several chicks who already at 21-22 caused 2-3 accidents because they were on their phones. 2 of them were going 25mph might I add.

Sorry Itsjustme...that kind of BS American/Canadian mentality is what pisses me off and anyone who is a good driver. Practice defensive driving, dont go fast but its ok to block traffic and yack on the mobile seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Americans cant even navigate a traffic circle, how the hell do you expect them to drive their $50k BMW above 60mph.

Montana had it right for a while, take out the speed limits, and look what happened...traffic fatalities fell every consecutive year and went up when it was reinstated. I remember once I was with my dad and we drove 125mph across half of Montana on I-90. It was really a pleasure once to drive however you damn well pleased when there was nothing but prairie across a 600 mile radius and a car every 10 minutes.

I believe it, driving an Impreza in Chicagoland is like having a cop magnet. Of course you have the Schaumburg Police on your list. Damn nazis almost gave me a ticket once because I rolled out at about 3mph out of a Mobil onto the street because I failed to stop at an "Implied stop" at 3am.

120mph and he let you off? Nice cop! I was driving with my aunt in Poland last summer in our Ford Mondeo 2.0TDCi and we were topping off at 205km/h racing 2 Passats...when we get to the end of the highway they lineup on either side and turn on their signals for 5 seconds and that was that. Twas the undercover federal police..hehe

On a sidenote, The Buffalo Grove cops pulled my friend over when I was driving with him in his Camaro, gave a ticket for too loud of an exhaust when he was barely accelerating...with a STOCK exhaust. The judge at the Circuit Court was so damn pissed off at the cop for writing a ticket for a stock exhaust for wasting court time and money haha.

Out of curiosity...what did you get stopped for by the Dept. of Revenue?

I know of a friend who got stopped by the Federal Postal Police for doing donuts at the Schaumburg post office parking lot in the winter  Silly

I myself have calmed quite a bit since my youth. My last ticket came on the Mass. Pike in Feb. of 2000. I have talked myself out of a couple tickets since then, most notably to the Japanese police officer in Fukushima who pulled me over for a rolling stop while I was driving one of the town cars  scared  But that is another story for another time.

Thats the kind of opinionated BS I laugh at, someone telling me im dangerous without ever driven with me. It is rather funny and it gives me joy in life that I can say that I dislike cops who sit on a lawn chair with a radar gun half the afternoon and pull people over for going 10 over when the danger is in the soccer mom whos yakking on her mobile and waves to the cop at the same time.

I love discussing stuff like this with cops here, not only do I find it entertaining (and im sure Sovietjet does too) discussing stuff like this, I find it a joy when you guys get pissed off, start preaching and saying stuff like "be glad youre not cruising these streets."

Im glad im not cruising your streets, probably would get a ticket, maybe a night in the slammer. However, Im more glad you're not a cop anywhere but here because Id fear for your life if you tried to pull someone over on the A1 between Sofia and Burgas and talk to them like you talk to people here.

I have nothing against ANCflyer, it's his job and he's got to put food on the table. But LOT is right, today I got cut off twice and if I didn't honk, I would've gotten hit. First one was the mom on the cell phone(so stereotypical, yet so true), the second one was an old lady in a dodge intrepid. Mind you both times we were going no more than 30mph.

Department of Revenue? They pulled me over for no front plate. This really pisses me off, because I know they don't care if I have a front plate or not, they just want my money(hence the department of REVENUE). Oh and of course a minute later a corvette passes me with no front plate, or even holes for one.....

To dispell the rumor I like ANCflyer also alot..partly because he likes Grolsch and partly because he lives in a nice state and is travels to McHenry area.

Give it a rest Sovietjet, the day you and me see a cop here in the suburbs standing with binos instead of a radargun and looking out for people yakking on a phone is the day I drink Miller Lite and enjoy it.

The front plate law annoys me too, however I take off my front IL plate when I get to FL...even though I should have it on hehe.
