Things You Like, And Dislike, About Your Country

Wed Jul 04, 2007 8:29 am

I'd like people to list a number of things they like about their country, and also an equal number of things they dislike. So if you can think of three, five or twenty things you like, you've to match them with three, five, or twenty things you dislike. If you can only think of one thing you dislike, only list one you like. If you can't think of anything you like or dislike, don't bother posting.

I'll start the ball rolling:

Things that make me stay:

SIZE: While being small can have it's disadvantages, Ireland really is just one big village.
SCENERY: Never fails to catch my breath.
LOCATION: With low-cost airlines now flying to all the major cities in Europe, why would I even think of living anywhere else?
INFORMALITY: You can strike-up a conversation with anyone, anytime, anywhere.
RTE RADIO 1: A good mix of quality and entertaining programming. The thing I miss most when abroad.

Things that make me want to pack my bags:

THE WEATHER: So unpredictable it's not funny, particulary after one of the wettest Junes on record.
BEGRUDGERY: At its finest on a personal level, sometimes I wonder if this isn't our defining national trait.
ROADS: They still have to be the worst in western Europe. And the illogical speed limits drive me crazy.
GOVERNMENT WASTE: Throwing billions at an inefficient health service doesn't work.
PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE PAST: This is 2007, not 1916.

Over to you, folks!

LIKE:
Bermuda is GORGEOUS.
The pace of life is slow; no hustle like in a big city.
Most people are friendly.
It's relatively safe.
No income tax.

DISLIKE:
The current government...crooked as they come, and barreling towards independence faster than the speed of light. (The Island is SO not ready for independence)
High air fares out of here.....vacations can be really expensive, mainly because of airline monopolies.
High prices because of customs duties, shipping costs added in to sell prices.

Canada

Likes:

Democracy
The various weather
The food
The great spotting location, Wendy's, at YYZ  Wink
Our airlines
Tim Horton's

Dislikes:

Political Correctness. I always hated it and always will  gnasher
The idiots with no knowledge about their own country
The cost of living in Southern Ontario
The increasing crime.
The education system in Ontario. The teachers don't have any time to teach the stuff properly (mainly math, english, and science). And it's all being crammed into ealier years.

Pros
  • Rights of the people
  • Booming economy
  • BBQ
  • Different regions of the country (desert, arctic, tropical, quaint little village, etc.)

  • Choice of companies to do business with
  • Not a communistic society (apart from a few nutjobs)

    Cons
  • Politicians who have no spine, brain, and/or sense as to what the people want
  • Nothing being done with border security
  • Homeland security being a joke
  • TSA
  • Spanish EVERYWHERE!
  • Rediculous laws and taxes (come on, a death tax?!)
  • PC crap
  • Flying an aeroplane with only a single propeller to keep you in the air. Can you imagine that? -Capt. Picard

    About Finland:

    - the Nordic welfare system still mostly working, few really poor & homeless
    - clean nature

    - drinking habits
    - social skills not valued enough
    - HELSINKI : rather far from the most big European cities, few LCC's, silent winters, expensive houses

Since someone allready did America as a whole, I'll do California

    LIKES:

    Weather

Most of the people are laid back and chill, no one has a pole rammed too far up there ass.

Were more liberal as a whole, and as a society, more open then say Kansas or Iowa (no offense, but gay rights and abortion as seem to be taboo out there)

    Arnie is governor

    Beach

    DISLIKES:

    Traffic

Shallow Beverly Hill Prep betches (intentionally mispelled)

The public education system has got to be a joke, I've learned more from Wikipedia then I have from middle school and my freshman year in highschool

Overall, most of us are laid back people, sure we have some corruption in the government, and our school system may not be the best, and there are some uptight shallow idiots, but for the most part, 90% of all Californians are just laid back people, we like what we like, we dislike what we dislike, and if something is bothering us, we don't bitch about it, we try to change it.

It's always been a problem, although after the unification, the problem became worse in the new federal states. It's under control right now, but those people will still be there to cause trouble, especially on days like WWII VE Day or May 1st.

No judgement. Never flew on one of them.  Wink However, I should have added the LT MD-11 to my list of dislikes. I like the MD-11, but not when I have to put up with an all economy, 10 abreast 3-4-3 sardine can configuration with a 29-30" seat pitch on it.  irked

Intelligent and interesting post there Gunsontheroof! Have a great time in Paris . . . I just got back from there on Monday and had a great time. Parisians are nothing near as rude as they are made out to be, once you make a stab at their language, even if it is only a "s'il vous plait" or "merci".

I met Aussie's in Thailand, Turkey and Greece and they've all equated John Howard with Dubya. That makes sense considering the average Dubya supporter doesn't travel more than 50 miles in his/her lifetime.

Intelligent and interesting post there Gunsontheroof! Have a great time in Paris . . . I just got back from there on Monday and had a great time. Parisians are nothing near as rude as they are made out to be, once you make a stab at their language, even if it is only a "s'il vous plait" or "merci".

Thanks, Braybuddy. I'm afraid I'm only flying to Paris enroute to HEL, but I'm hoping to actually spend some time there during my time off of school during the next year. On the upside, I'll be getting a chance to check out Amsterdam and Boston during my extended layovers at their respective airports on my way back home. Can't wait.

Other then what BrayBuddy has already mentioned which I concur with:

    Rep. of Ireland:

    Likes:
•Education system - it has its flaws, but progression to University and other third level is widely accessible/inexpensive when compared to other places, and of a good quality.

    • Sense of humility – as a nation, I think our history (both recent and further back) has never allowed us to think of ourselves as being any better then anyone else. I think this has been a factor in the level of support and aid we contribute to other nations which are experiencing similar hardships to the ones we have gone through. Of course they’re many countries with the same level of humility, but definitely not all.

•Laid back society – onto what BrayBuddy said about Informality.

    Dislikes:

•Inefficiency in Public sector – Aaaaargh! Our infrastructure could have been so much better if the right people had been in the right positions, and not some cronies who just threw money at projects which have ended up over-budget and behind schedule.

•Celtic Tiger – not ignoring the huge advantages it brought, it’s also changed our society a lot and not for the better IMO.

•Rain – Feck off somewhere else for a change and give us some sunshine!

    Quoting Braybuddy (Thread starter):
SCENERY: Never fails to catch my breath.

If I could be guaranteed the good weather, I'd spend all my holidays in Kerry/Galway/Donegal. Have yet to see anything which matches its scenery abroad.

    Here's about Finland:

    POSITIVE:

    Great and clean nature
A society that works really well. Be it sunshine or blizzard, the bus will come and the flight will leave!
Seasons, summer, fall, winter and spring, all have their peculiar flavor.
    Long days of summer.
The Finnish people, who tend to be pragmatic
Informal relations. You can be friends with anybody!
    Drinking habits...
Ice-Hockey games between Sweden and Finland, especially when they end in a shut-out victory over Sweden!!

NEGATIVE (do I really have to...?)

Accountability problems in some people's lives. People blaming others instead of doing something!
It is cool to be cool, ie not show any passion...
    Jeolousy over other people's success
    The wet winters, they suck!!
    The darkness during winter
The way everything is related to making money nowadays
Cost of living. Imagine I don't have the money to by a new camera every 6 months!!!
    Drinking habits....

    Quick thoughts:

    Like:

The Countryside - Some lovely scenery across the UK
Our fish and chip's ( Can't beat em!)
Availability of my favourite tipple - Cider
We are, on the whole, a Nation of animal lovers
Public Transport systems are very good ( That includes cheap Air travel)
Our roads are in pretty good shape
We have very old Country pubs - A pleasure to frequent ! ( Log fires in the winter)
    The football Premiership
The English pound ( Ah..but for how much longer?)
Our Veterinary care - Our pets are well looked after.

    Dislike:

Cost of living ( Going up and up )
    The new restrictions on smoking
The weather - We seem to have lost our seasons ?
A lot of Political stuff which I won't go into
    The price of ciggies...AAAhhhh
More political stuff which I won't go into
    Prescription charges
Dental Care costs ( Guess that comes under cost of living)

    Undecided:
    The NHS !

    The UK:

    LIKES:

    - A liberal, democratic society.
    - The NHS.
    - London, one of the world's greatest cities, and a major business centre.
    - We have a brilliant entertainment industry.
    - Diversity and multiculturalism.
    - The economy.
    - Our history as a superpower.
    - The birthplace of the English Language.
    - We have so many airlines and airports for a country of our size.
    - Everything is so close together, which is great.
    - We have some beautiful areas, like the Peak District and Cornwall.
    - Friendly people (on the whole.)
    - History all around, ancient and historic buildings and cathedrals.

    DISLIKES:

    - Chav culture.
    - Expensive.
    - The trains! Ugh, the ones to London are brilliant, clean, fast, efficient. Regional lines are, well, the complete opposite.
    - The education system. It's failing, and nothing significant is being done about it.
    - The BBC, considering the public pay for it, they do show some sh*t.
    - How people just live off benefits.
    - Piers Morgan.

There probably is a lot more I could list, but I really can't think of any right now.

When it comes to Nigeria, its much easier to think of the dislike part.

    NIGERIA

    GOOD

-The rich culture and tradition(People still practice their culture today as they did hundreds of years earlier)
-Over 250 languages spoken(More than 80% of Nigerians can speak at least 2 languages. Most people are bilingual)
-Fantastic food(Due to the various ethnic groups, there is wide range variety of different cuisines. Its like having a whole continent's cuisines in one country)
    -Good music
    -Blessed with natural resources
    -Numerous cities
-A good movie industry (third largest in the world)
    -People take their religion seriously
    -Things are very cheap
    -Almost everyone owns a farm
-Unlike many African countries, its almost impossible to have food shortage
-There is mutual respect for elderly people or people with high status
    -The national football team
-Most people are polite and friendly

(Took me more than an hour to come up with that list)

    BAD

-Corruption and mis-management of the economy
-You have to pay bribe to get some of the most basic services
-Scammers and Con-Artists who have severely damaged the country's image and reputation to the eyes of the world.
    -Distrust amongst the public
    -Too many greedy people
    -Very high crime rate
    -Poverty
    -Untidy cities
    -Over dependency on oil
    -Polluted lakes and oceans
    -Frequent power outages
    -Tribalism exists
-Religious tensions and fightings occur very often
-Almost anything operated or run by the government is considered unreliable
-The weather(It rains too much and if theres no rain,it gets very humid)
-Very poor infrastructure(bad roads, no proper housing or enough clean water for many)
    -Too much mosquitoes
-The gap between the rich and the poor is too wide
-Strikes happen too frequently and have had terrible consequences on many people. I know of someone who was meant to graduate from the university in 2000, but still hasn't graduated due to frequent srikes

    Quoting Superfly (Reply 10):
Freedom to travel. Fewer nations require us to get Visa for entry to theirs

    - Vice Versa

(I can go on and on and believe it or not, it took me approximately 7 mins to come up with that list!)

    CANADA

    GOOD

    - I believe wherever you come from, if your in Canada, you always have a peace of mind
    - Very nice and friendly people
    - Magnificent sceneries
    - The beautiful city of Edmonton
    - Multi-cultural diversity
    - Low crime rates
    - A decent health care system
    - Excellent educational institutions
    - Westjet
    - Neutrality
    - Bombardier aircrafts
    - Good roads
    - Easy approval to travel to other countries
    - Tim Hortons

    BAD

-Very difficult to watch major world sports on TV e.g Soccer
    -The city of Winnipeg
    -High tax
-How Canadians pronounce words that have "OU"
    -Involvement in Afghanistan
    -Air Canada
-The condition of the aboriginal people
    -The conservative party

I have a question relating to this: I'm half-Irish and I spend alot of time there visiting family, and I've always wondered why the Irish can't build flat roads. We were on a newly finished asphalt covered dual carriage way, and it was still bumpy as a country gravel road! How hard is it to make a road flat?! Steam-rollers, anyone?

    Cheers

Hmmmm, can't understand that. I've been on most of the motorways and dual carriageways in the last year and don't remember coming across bumpy surfaces on them. There's a lot of road-building going on the last few years so you may have been on one that hadn't had its final layer applied. And, as to "why the Irish can't build flat roads", WE DON'T BUILD THEM ANYMORE! Most of them now seem to be built by foreign companies. They're cheaper, and they finish them quicker.

    United Kingdom

    LIKE:

A free, stable and democratic society, the standard bearer for Parliamentary democracy
Landscape/Scenery - the lush green landscape, snow capped mountains, rolling farmland, golden sandy beaches
Friendly, polite people with outstanding manners
Diversity/Multiculture-ism - People from every nation in the world have made Britain their home
Tolerance - I would rather live in the UK as a British muslim than any other country in the world, you are accepted as who you are regardless of your race or religion
Football - we are a football nation with a football tradition, not very successful but that's another matter
Transport system - despite it's flaws and the criticism we have one of the most intense and extensive transport infrastructures in the world, especially in the built-up urban areas
NHS - It has it's problems but i wouldn't swap it for any other foreign pay-as-you-go system
Welfare system - Everyone is catered to and has access to help regarding social and financial problems regardless of who you are
Economy - stable and prosperous economy

    DISLIKE:

Overcrowding - There are WAY too many people living in this densely populated island, a case of too many people living
    in too little space
Cost of living - Utility bills only seem to go up, house prices have reached criminal levels, an example of "Rip-off Britain"
    Uncontrolled/mass immigration
Too many cars on the road and too many idiot drivers
Politicians who make too many broken promises
Gun crime - too many people have access to too many guns
Social/Family breakdown - too many broken families as a result of drugs, alcohol obsession, divorce etc..
Criminal justice system is too weak - Last week a lorry a driver was given only a TWO YEAR prison sentence for killing
two people after smashing into them at high speed, just one example
    Too much reality TV
    An obsession with celebrity gossip
    In Arsene we trust!!

    Romania:

    Likes:
Scenery--amazing mountains and not only mountains.
Sights--there is a lot of nice stuff to see.
Good spicy food--I am picky in foods, but I always have a choice.
    Bukovina region
    Transylvania

    Complex: (between like and dislike)
Cities: ranging form well maintained, beautiful cities, such as Brasov, Sighisoara, Sibiu, Radauti, Cluj Napoca to ugly communist cities such as Bucharest and Buzau.
Trains: very good, such as InterCity and (most) Rapid trains, to completely horrible... Accelerat and Personal trains in 2nd class.
People: Some are the most hospitable and friendly in the world, others the worst (especially those who hold offices in releasing passports, etc, who seem to prefer to die to helping someone).

    Dislikes:
Gypsies--most of them ARE pickpockets and seem to dislike water and soap...
    Corruption--worst in Europe, perhaps?
Roads--they're good since they're made until it snows somewhat heavier, when they become pothole-ridden.
Prices--exorbitant compared to the average salary.
Lack of interest--no one does anything to promote tourism or consolidate medieval sights.
Plastic bottles--in lakes, rivers and everywhere else (in suburbs of some cities there are bottle hills)
    Drivers--holy shit, they're eternally annoyed and/or annoying...
Manele--music for an IQ of less than 40.

And, yet, overall, I like Romania. It wasn't my choice to emigrate to the US...

    Things I dislike:

We have no national language. Last weekend, when I was in YVR, it was easy because strangers spoke Englsh and French, so getting around or completing basic transactions was easy, unlike here when you get a blank stare and some words you don't understand.

We seem to know very little about our neighbors. I only know about Canada and Mexico because I have taken an active role in learning about those two countries. I know nothing about the Bahamas or Cuba, partly because I don't live close to there.

The way we elect the president. What's wrong with popular vote and doing away with the Electoral College?

    Things l like:

The scenery. In each of the three closest states (Oregon, Washington, and California) the climate and geography is so different and so close. We have desert, mountains, ocean, crystal clear lakes.... I absolutly love living on the West coast. I would love to visit the East and the South. I hear they have great scenery there, too.

Self-reliance. We have farming, manufacturing, and production. We can, if we had to, make our own food and resources.

    GO CANUCKS!!
    Patriotic and Proud Liberal

Some VERY interesting posts guys and gals, though some of you didn't stick to the equal-likes-plus-equal-dislikes which is the spirit of the thread. Thank you for being so upfront about the negative things in your countries, which I think makes your positives more believeable. Self praise is no praise, so your posts obviously give foreigners a much more credible insight into your country than you would get with a "likes-only" thread.

There's been a good representation from the US, Germany, the UK, Canada, Australia and a couple of continental European countries, plus one from Africa (Nigeria) and Asia (India). I was particularly interested in Belgium (thanks BWest) seeing that I go there often and haven't yet got a great insight into the country. I'd be very interested in hearing from more European countries, particularly France, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Denmark, Poland and Portugal, and also from more Asian and African countires. And of course South America and the Middle East! Where are you Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Palestine Authority, Iraq etc, etc?

    Banff, enough said
    Jasper/Lake Louise
    Drumheller
Calgary in the summertime (so many festivals)

    The hates:
The cost of living, especially in Calgary
The Deerfoot/QEII highway when it's congested
Ed Stelmach and the way he runs our province
Healthcare and the way it's run
    Our education system, sometimes

That's the way I see things here in Alberta. The good outweigh the bad, though.

     bigthumbsup

Only country that I know on this planet where you can spend hours staring at one of the great waterfalls of the world, dense rainforest with the howls monkeys and tucans all around.... then get on a car, travel the highways... and four days later feel the polar wind hitting your face as you glance at one of the great glaciers of the world, with a soaring condor above... (prairies, savanna, deserts, hills, highlands, mountains, steppes, forests, lakes, beaches, and all else in between)

     thumbsup

-World renowned Spanish-language literature with prolific number of famous writers
-Food (not really originality, but the freshness of ingredients and taste, foreigners envy leaving it behind)
-Climate: Want always warm, cool, four seasons, dry or humid? There's a place to your tastes
-Strong cultural nationhood: Argentina is not overrun by English-language music or fast-food like I honestly see in the rest of the world
-Team sports powerhouse: Only nation on Earth in the top 10 (top 8) in football, basketball, rugby, field hockey, volleyball, horseball, polo, tennis simultaneously (only 38 million people to field so many teams!!!)
-Excells in several medical, agricultural tech, and nuclear sciences
-Helped to bring freedom to a good portion of the New World
-Helped several European nations during and after WWI and WWII with food, humanitarian aid, and trade
-Way of life that attracts people from poorer and richer nations (cultural life, nightlife, etc)
-The dialect(vos instead of tu, slang), gives the nation distinction from other Spanish speaking countries
-Considering most of the world, fairly decent standards of living
-Historical high levels of religious tolerance (Christians, Jews, Muslims mixing and living in peace)
-The female genetic mix... Italian, Spanish, German, native American, Irish, French, English, Russian, Danish, Welsh, Jewish, Arab... Most males on the planet enjoy the final results  Wink

     thumbsdown

-People do not think the law is something to be cherished, it's to be disregarded, and glamorized if not caught breaking them, which result in the following two:

-Football stadium violence, which is the laughing stock of the world
-Traffic accidents, the world's highest or 2nd rate per capita depending on the year

-Political mismanagement (not so much corruption, which is high), but the short-term view and lack of vision
-Economic euphoria/depression cycles in the last 30 years leading to uncertain business climate
-Unnaceptable inequality in a country that is not that poor (no excuse)
-Detereorating education compared to decades past
-Current state of commercial aviation, can't complain about the industry because there is none!  banghead
    -The Dirty War of 1976-1980
-Somewhat lengthy, bloody history of formal warfare outside it's own borders for a country in Latin America: some for good reasons (besides self-interest!) like the campaigns against Spain and England in Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Uruguay, Central America, etc... but some for territorial conquest like the war with Paraguay or the 'cold' war with Chile for Patagonia, and some for outright racist genocidal reasons like the War of the Desert with the Cavalry exterminating thousands of indians to open the frontier for Whites; and even 'Wag the Dog' wars like the Falklands and the near war with Chile over the Beagle Channel.

    LOVE:
Cultural Diversity - We are a nation of immigrants with amazing level of social cohesion
Honesty - After travelling the globe the lack of corruption in our society is amazing
Opportunity - With some hard work anyone can make it
Australian Rules Football - Our own sport that just so happens to be the greatest sport in the world
Economic Boom - 15 years straight of stong economic growth - Everyone has a job. A generation of people who dont know what recession means.

    DISLIKE:
Foreign policy - Remind me again why Australian troops are in Iraq?
Lack of investment - we are in the middle of an amazing economic boom. Where is todays "Snowy Hydro scheme"?
Broadband speeds - In Australia 256 kbs down and 64 kb up is considered broadband - A joke
Tyranny of Distance - 24hrs to London, a right of passage all Aussies take up at one time or another but its a killer.
Insecurity - The requirement to make an Aussie connection in every news story - no matter how tenuous
Everyday is a gift…… but why does it have to be a pair of socks?

Lack of decent healthcare, government provided

Those two words don't go together.

    Quoting Speedbird747BA (Reply 17):
A distrust for different ideas (ie European style social welfare system)

It's beacuse European style social welfare system doesn't work.

    Speak for yourself lol.

It's awfully inconvenient that Europe and North America had to be built so so far away from Australia. After all, we were knocking around long before they were.  Wink

Oh I know - I HATE that! It reminds me of the often repeated (although untrue) story about a scottish newspaper reporting on the Titanic sinking with the headline: "GLASGOW MAN LOST AT SEA".
