How Much Did You Spend On Fireworks For The 4th?

Thu Jul 05, 2007 7:04 am

With those of us members here in the States celebrating Independence Day (July 4th), fireworks are a typical part of a July 4th. Whether you go down to a professional display or shoot some off where you live (regardless of the legality), that's part of what makes July 4th what it is.

To quote from a Simpsons episode: Celebrate the independence of your nation by blowing up a small
part of it.

So how many of my fellow members went out and bought some fireworks and how much  dollarsign  did you spend on them?

I spent about $38 on a nice assortment of the "safe and same" fireworks (In Georgia, any explosive firework is banned. They just allowed the non-explosive ones in a few years back.).

Man I wish I had some bottle rockets.....

None this year since I won't have any time to do it.

Fireworks are legal only in some cities in SoCal; although a small trip to Downtown LA (or even Mexico if you're up for it) is enough to get some of the big guns.

About 40$.....20$ for each kid  crazy

Had to talk them out of the 6 foot rockets at first  crazy  And i finally got them to settle for the standards : sparklers, popems, the dreaded "Smoke bombs" (ill regret those), and a few other goodies.

Even with the "safe and sane" fireworks being legal, folks here still drive over to Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina for the good stuff.

I was reading the other day how all of the fireworks shops that are literally right across the border in Alabama are hurting this year because of the drought. I guess folks don't want to risk getting arrested and/or fined for fireworks this year (There are some cities around here that passed emergency laws banning the sale of the "safe and sane" fireworks and at least one town has threatened to fine folks $500 if they are cited for violating the law banning the lighting of fireworks.) The State Fire Marshall in Alabama banned the sale of bottle rockets, which probably does hurt sales.

For many years, my dad would go on vacation in June to the Florida Panhandle and would always pick up a nice amount of fireworks for the Fourth.

About $100.00. I've got some friends and relatives in town for the holiday and we all pitched in some money.

$40 and I got burned on my thumb. My sister spent like 70 and I managed to have a multiple one go for like 15 sec- 45 sec.

I woke the neighbors in my apartment complex with the poppers at 11PM, so I dropped half the bag and I woke up from people driving over them. I'm buying 6 of those poppers and 200 dollars worth next year.

Here in Maine, I spend $0 on fireworks because they are illegal with the exception of sparklers, and caps (for cap guns) and the law says I can't have them without facing the risk of arrest! If you're caught in the act of setting off a firecracker in Maine you can be arrested! Or ticketed if not caught in the act. If you're caught smuggling in fireworks from New Hampshire, than it might as well be cocaine, because if you have more than a couple hundred dollars worth of merchandise than it's gets elevated to a felony charge! The State Police actually send undercover agents to stake out nearby New Hampshire firework stores parking lots for customers coming over from Maine..They arrest them when they come back into Maine.

Maine is one of the eleven "Nanny" States with the view that the everyday Joe is too stupid to handle the responsibility and judgement required to safely set of consumer fireworks. They also have no confidence in the everyday Joe to except fault for his own misjudgement if he foolishly blows off an arm or finger! Plus, every year around this time when the subject of fireworks comes around, you're always hearing about all the kids who are being saved from loosing an eye to a stray bottle rocket, or scarred by horrible burns that disfigure them for life and make them wretched freaks that even an internet bride from Russia wouldn't marry!. It's funny though, where are all these child victims in nearby New Hampshire where fireworks have long been legal? Is there a disproportionate amount of them hidden from public eye there?

When I was a kid, I use to go spend the summers in Mississippi where fireworks sales were legal. I'd UPS several hundred dollars worth back home to Maine, and then I'd hawk them off for three times the price to my fellow Junior High School students! I remember one time I even flew home with loads of fireworks stuffed into the socks in my checked luggage on NW MSY-MEM-BOS. I was only 13, and boy was that probably pretty stupid! I'm glad my dad never found out or I would have been dead! It's been 14 years and I've still got some leftovers that work that I found at my parents house. Will be shooting those off tonight! For those of you fortunate to live in states where fireworks are legal, have a good time tonight!

When you burn your thumb, you know you want to spend more. I might set off fireworks on x-mas day. I enjoy this day as it comes only once or twice a year. People do it on x-mas and spend a helluva lot. I know someone who spent 200 this yr.

$400 bucks. Me and a few buddies saved up and took a trip out to Canton and stocked up. Everything from bottle rockets to mortars. Actually, we only had enough time to get thru one assortment tonight.

In Ohio the are legal to buy if you promise to take them out of state. (hint hint). I spent about $30 on fire crackers. Many to harass the local geese population. It is illegal to set them off but the cops don't really care as long as you don't get out of control.

Before fireworks became semi legal in CT, I used to always go to NH to get tons and tons of fireworks, although what I still go and get in NH is still illegal in CT, I forget the exact parameters since they started allowing them back, although they seem to get a little bit laxer every year when it comes to size and strength. This year however spent $0, just didn't have time, had a few leftover, but the 4th was a washout this year, with on and off showers and overcast all day, but hey there's always tomorrow Big grin

Just to avoid some confusion, I do think you mean "safe and sane".

Also, in CA and in selected areas, those are the only ones allowed, but I did not buy any...I miss New Hampshire where they have Costco sized stores that sell nothing but fireworks...and I mean REAL fireworks.

Ever since our paranoid government has issued a ban on certain fireworks on the last 10-15 years on items such as bottle rockets, cherry bombs, snake smoke, firecrackers, etc etc.... I have come to not care for fireworks. Its not fun anymore. And the government is doing us a favor to promote firework safety....  sarcastic  Fun huh?

About $110.00 this year. Got them in South Carolina - at South of the Border no less - when we were returning from our "SWIGG" golf outing..... SWIGG is "Screw Work, I'm Going Golfing" This year, we had 28 people and held it at Santee National Golf Club. It was mostly drinking, but we did play some golf too.  bigthumbsup

My neighbor and I went in together and dropped around $550 and put on a show for all the kids on our street. We had a big party with all the neighbors. It was great. You can get some pretty big stuff that is bordering on commercial grade for that kind of money. Good times for all!

Beer and booze. Many of the Taco Mac locations have an awesome beer selection. Some of their locations do beer dinners, similar to what some wineries do.
