Here in Maine, I spend $0 on fireworks because they are illegal with the exception of sparklers, and caps (for cap guns) and the law says I can't have them without facing the risk of arrest! If you're caught in the act of setting off a firecracker in Maine you can be arrested! Or ticketed if not caught in the act. If you're caught smuggling in fireworks from New Hampshire, than it might as well be cocaine, because if you have more than a couple hundred dollars worth of merchandise than it's gets elevated to a felony charge! The State Police actually send undercover agents to stake out nearby New Hampshire firework stores parking lots for customers coming over from Maine..They arrest them when they come back into Maine.
Maine is one of the eleven "Nanny" States with the view that the everyday Joe is too stupid to handle the responsibility and judgement required to safely set of consumer fireworks. They also have no confidence in the everyday Joe to except fault for his own misjudgement if he foolishly blows off an arm or finger! Plus, every year around this time when the subject of fireworks comes around, you're always hearing about all the kids who are being saved from loosing an eye to a stray bottle rocket, or scarred by horrible burns that disfigure them for life and make them wretched freaks that even an internet bride from Russia wouldn't marry!. It's funny though, where are all these child victims in nearby New Hampshire where fireworks have long been legal? Is there a disproportionate amount of them hidden from public eye there?
When I was a kid, I use to go spend the summers in Mississippi where fireworks sales were legal. I'd UPS several hundred dollars worth back home to Maine, and then I'd hawk them off for three times the price to my fellow Junior High School students! I remember one time I even flew home with loads of fireworks stuffed into the socks in my checked luggage on NW MSY
. I was only 13, and boy was that probably pretty stupid! I'm glad my dad never found out or I would have been dead! It's been 14 years and I've still got some leftovers that work that I found at my parents house. Will be shooting those off tonight! For those of you fortunate to live in states where fireworks are legal, have a good time tonight!
