Girl, 4, Called 911 Nearly 300 Times
Jul 5 01:08 PM US/Eastern

CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Authorities tracked down a 4-year-old girl who called 911 nearly 300 times last month by offering to deliver McDonald's to her suburban Chicago apartment.

Unbeknownst to her mother, the girl used a deactivated cell phone to call dispatchers 287 times in June—sometimes as often as 20 times a shift.

In defense of the parent, she said that didn't know that it was happening, and in defense of the child, they make toy cell phones that look and act like real cell phones now (Can you say 'consumerism?') and that the child probably thought it was a toy.

Of course, this begs the question of how the child managed to keep the cell phone's battery charged, and at the same time, hide it from her mother.

Um, Education? I'm sure 4 y/o can distinguish if the people on the otherside talking to her is real or not!

What's more moronic is that the child asked a stranger for McDonald's and the operator offered to deliver it to her if she told them her address, that is  redflag  for parenting, this could have been easily anyone on the phone she was talking too. 4 y/o's should know what to do when encountering strangers this is parenting 101. This along with a child finding, using, charging, and able to make so many calls to 911, are we even sure she dialed 911 herself? (Could have one of those emergency presets, or as the article cites just held 9 and remembered each time).

And how much time does this child have without parental supervision to call 911 more than 20 times in one shift??? I could maybe see a call every now and then but a 4 y/o with so much unsupervised time?

Further in defense of the parent, she probably though it would be 100% useless for making calls after it was deactivated, not realizing that nearly every cell-phone can access the nearest compatible network for emergency calls, regardless of the status of service.

I'm not saying that 4-year old's don't know what the purpose of 911 is, I'm simply saying that at such a young age she couldn't have possibly been able to grasp the seriousness of such an offense. Perhaps better parenting was (and is) necessary.

Four year olds don't understand calling 911 when there is no emergency is a big deal. A lot of people don't realize that cell phones with no service plan anymore can still call 911. Its an accident. No one's fault, really.

What I'm more interested in is why they didn't send a police car over before the 287th call.

Did the little girl get her Happy Meal with the toy?

Give the kid and the parents a break.

There are plenty of grown adults knowingly who call 911 for stupid reasons.
I knew a few 911 dispatchers that had people call to get the time of day, weather updates, baseball game scores and neighbor's dog barking.
So I would cut the 4 year old and the parent some slack in this case.

This is not accurate. The child called 911 nearly 300 times, but none of them specifically for McDonald's. McDonald's only came up when the people at the other end asked the kid what she wanted and offered to deliver it. It's right in your post:

So - are you dumb or did you just make a mistake?

checkmark  But some people like to turn incidents like this into justification for attacking people they don't know. I'm sure a lot of good, smart parents had good, smart kids who did dumb stuff every now and then. It's not like the mom was encouraging the kid to prank 911.

I agree Superfly. We should cut them slack most defintely. Also teach this kid what 9-11 means.

I remember when I was six, I prank called 911 and quickly hung up the phone. Little did I know, within 15 minutes I hear a knock at my door, and there is a cop. He went ahead and gave me a little talk about the importance of not prank calling 911 and how important it is, etc. The whole situation scared the hell out of me, and never again did I even think about prank calling 911...

When I was about 6 I pranked 911. Well picked up the phone dialed let it ring once and than hung up before going to school. Well when I got home my mom gave me a nice little talking to.

Agreed, hopefully this will be a learning lesson for the kid....For example

Um, pretty much the definition of a 4 year old is 'cute & dumb (naive)'. I'm a 42 yo professional, my partner is a telecomm project manager and I didn't know that deactivated cell phones can still reach 911. As a 4 year old, I would have been delighted if my folks gave me a cool toy like an old cell phone, and if I pushed a button and someone answered, you can bet I would've kept pushing it. If it happens again, then yeah, there's a problem, but this time around its just one of those funny things caused by a combination of events that'll give both the mom and the kid a great story in the years to come.

When I was 6, I called 911 as a prank. Got me in some trouble. Little did I know that they could find your address from the phone number. Scared the hell outta me when the cop showed up and my mom was ticked.

Yup, 911 Hangups will get an officer response. Reasoning being that in a domestic (or any other crime in progress), the caller might have had time to call 911 before the phone was yanked out of the wall.

I did it once around that age I got it big trouble and have never had to call it again, however my parents were anything but stupid.

I'm a Jim Rome Fan and he does segments where he makes fun of 911 calls involving athletes such as OJ or Tanya Harding and I found this call which he made fun of big time on youtube which makes me  rotfl   rotfl  every time.
