Metallica Yesterday In Vienna. Rock On!

Fri Jul 06, 2007 6:26 pm

Yesterday Metallica played in Vienna to one of the largest audiences any concet can take, as part of their Sick of the Studio tour. No wonder they're still around after 25 years. They sounded absolutely awesome, vocals were amazing, lead and solo guitar, drums, and their new bassist. The band was tight, and simply blew the stage away for 2h30min, never saw an enthusiastic audience like that, people were flying around  Smile The audience was like a turbulent sea, where periodical massive waves of laughing "pushers" carry you 20 meters away in one second, I moved some few hundred meters from the beginning to the end due to these sudden violent crowd "waves". Even they were very impressed, and in the end they lingered much longer before leaving. James couldn't hide his surprise and didn't stop praising the audience, it was singing the songs louder than him.

Now I understand what makes them rock on for so long with continuing success. It was obvious that off stage, they're very clear headed professionals who get things done with no nonsense.
It's the biggest concert I've been to, and I've been to alot! It was a sea of mad people. I mean, when Metallica themselves are impressed with the enthusiasm of the audience...

I have two friends who were there. I am sure that the concert was awesome, and I am very jealous!

I was at NovaRock in Nickelsdorf, Burgenland... maybe you were there, too, Kay? After that I can certainly say that Austrian crowds are great!!!

No unfrotunately, as much as I would have liked to, I couldn't get around the fact that 3 days was a bit too much for me.. Now Nuke, on July 13/14 in St. Pölten, THAT would have been the next thing, with Prodigy, Beastie Boys, Wir Sind Helden, Die Fantastischen Vier, Silbermond etc.. but I'm travelling  mad

Next concerts in Vienna this year. The Police, and for the g/f.. Gwen Stefani  boxedin

I've seen many videos from this SOTS tour on Youtube and the band definitely sounds tight. Everyone across the board has improved dramatically, and you can tell they've rediscovered some of that fire from the late 80s and early 90s. I also like that they've tuned the guitars back up. The songs sound like they should again.

3 days was certainly a lot. You wouldn't believe some of the (disgusting, weird, horrible) situations people were living in there! I slept with 4 other people in a tent designed for 2 people (plus all our bags and food and stuff)!!! We had 2 Austrians, 1 Canadian (me), 1 American and 1 Norwegian!  Big grin

As for Nuke in St. Pölten, I won't be in Austria anymore (leaving on the 10th), so not possible for me.

I'm reading reviews on the web right now that confirm that they're many times better than a couple of years ago. Yesterday they sounded like they should and much more, sound quality was amazing and my shaken chest can attest to it. I can only imagine how much it costs to put a gigantic stage like that with such crisp and pounding sound, guitar riffs and drums never tore through the sky (and people's chests) more than last night. There was also thomping fireworks around a few songs. Add to that giant screens, Kirk's solos, James' vocals and you're there.

I saw them in 2003, they were great... Good to see they're still doing their thing and kicking ass at it!
