Very true, as they've indicted and convicted folks in Virginia on similar charges with a lot less evidence than this.

The downside of this from an NFL perspective is that even if the Falcons were to release him as a result of this indictment (or if he gets convicted or makes a plea deal), they'd still be on the hook for the guaranteed part of his salary, which will be about a 10th of the salary cap. If the NFL decides to suspend him, the team would still be on the hook for it in regards to the salary cap.

After all, we signed his backup in Miami last season, Joey Harrington, so why not him?

Right now, after Vick, we've got Harrington, D.J. Shockley and Chris Redman

I am supremely disappointed in Mike Vick. The dude has all that talent and let's something as stupid as this bring him down. It's been coming for a while, and he's skated on a couple of issues. Unless some evidence that has been discussed proves to be false then I won't support the Falcons if they play him. A significant chunk of the fanbase won't either. The team'll be left with the dogfighter element and the apologists who insist he's being discriminated against counter to all reason, evidence and logic.

I was a fan of the man after he made the efforts and played with heart....I wrote off the childish crap, and respected and remarked on his growth as a player and person. As a fan of the sport and sportsmanship I'm really pissed.

Quoting Srbmod (Reply 4):

If the NFL decides to suspend him, the team would still be on the hook for it in regards to the salary cap.

I thought they all had a morals clause in their contracts. I think that if he's convicted of a crime then the Falcons are not liable for his salary and consequently the salary cap.

Bet Atlanta is wishing they didn't trade Matt Schaub away.

I don't know...he's got potential, but I wonder whether they'd be able to rebuild the offense around him that quickly. Right now it doesn't play to his strengths. I hope he starts where he is, since that's the only reason he left.

I'd like to see what happens with the development of DJ Shockley...he's a class act and a stand up guy who can lead a team. Its a shame he only got one year to play at UGA as the main man.....but he stuck it out there for the team and that counts. He works hard and plays smart. If Harrington doesn't get it done Shockley'll be in there, and I hope it's not too early.

I'm going to be curious to see if Roger Goddell sticks to his "zero-tolerance" clause with regards to Vick.
It's one thing to suspend Pac-Man Jones, another to do so to Mike Vick.
I hope he does though, if not, he'll look weaker as the commish.

The difference is that Adam Jones has had NUMEROUS run-ins with the law. Vick hasn't (at least not in terms of beig charged with anything, if you count the water bottle/airport thing).

Goodell's crackdown hits repeat offenders mostly, although he could issue some discipline consistent with the NFLPA agreement under that nebulous catch-all "conduct detrimental to the league" clause.

Yeah, but didn't he make a statement that all players that got into trouble with the law would receive disciplinary actions against them?

Can you just see in your mind the gross harassment the fans in the stands will give MV when he takes the field  gnasher
One late news note is that he will be at a hearing on the charges the first day he is supposed to report to pre-season camp.
To me, the NFL should suspend Vick and without penalty to the team - only to Vick - just for the illegal gambling and criminals involved with dogfighting. Those factors should be enough even before trial - the hell to the union.
Better would be for Vick to withdraw from playing this season. Vick is going to be very distracted with his defense to these charges which is not in his, the Falcon's or the NFL's best interests.
Dogfighting is a highly illegal sport and not just to the obscene cruelty to the animals involved who participate in the fights and in the training. Dogfighting often involves criminals, including drug dealers, street gangsters and other groups of organized criminals. Dirty criminal money may be laundered during dogfights. There is massive illegal gambling. If Vick has been involved to the degree alleged, unless he rats on others, he is going to play for the prison team next season.

Good point - but I think folks are damn tired of sports stars & celebrities getting off light in cases like these. I think some of that has rubbed off onto the authorities, and MV just might get a stiff sentence.

I think a federal indictment is a different animal, they get a conviction on something like 95% of their cases. I will need to confirm that, though...

Federal Prosecutors as a rule, will not take a case unless they're at least 95% sure they can get a conviction. Add to that, the Richmond, VA Federal Court circuit - nick-named "The Rocket Docket"-- known for their rapid case disposition. You can bet, this was thoroughly verified before the indictment was raised.
Having said that- and bearing in mind he hasn't been convicted:
How can you NOT KNOW that something of that nature was taking place on your property? To me, that-in-and-of-it's-self, speaks volumes. Things like this, have a way of biting you in the ass, hard!
Either way, his career, as he knows it, is over.

Along with the federal indictment, they are probably going to file local charges in Surrey County. Apparently, the penalties for these "allegations" are more severe at the local level.

YEah.. but Favre was headed down the wrong path here in ATL. He needed the change in scenery to focus on being QB, plus he got placed in the perfect system for his skills.

Favre's one of the greats, but it may have taken the release from ATL to prod him into proving himself.

Thats what I keep telling myself, at least.

I will say that I'd bet Schaub is no Favre.... although, if by some miracle Houston has developed a line, he should do ok.

Innocent until proven guilty.

I have always been a Vick fan, so I really hope he's not guilty of these heinous acts, and people shouldn't convict him based on a charge. (Remember the Duke Lacrosse players?)

But if he is, I won't shed a tear for him when he gets put away for a long time. Whoever is responsible for this is an unparalleled a-hole.

I drove past the Falcons' training facility yesterday morning (I take that particular road to go between two stops on my route so I don't have to deal with the road construction on I-985 as much.) and it really was a media circus out front. There were at least three satellite uplink trucks in addition to the normal local affiliates' news vans. At the time I passed by, there was only one protester standing outside of the fences and they were carrying an anti-Vick sign.

2 interesting points about Michael Vick and his current problems I read about today:

1) He may face a revised indictment, adding more charges, more than the current 2 'conspiricy' charges. This also may be to push him into ratting on his co-defendants, to make plea deal to save his own butt. He will have far better lawyering than his co-defendnats and others who may face long jail time if convicted.

2) Protesters outside the Richmond Federal Courthouse at the time he was arraigned. One reporter from Fox Sports (I hope I am correct) noted that 90% of the 'anti-Vick'/animal protection protesters were white and 90 % of those asking for respect for the Constitution as to a presumption of innocence before trial were Black.

Bad news for Vick, one of his co-defendants is copping a plea on Monday...getting off of a sinking boat?

I've been hearing rumors that Vick may not be "the big fish" in this investigation. Supposedly, a very high-profile NBA player may be involved in this ring as well, but they don't have enough evidence to indict him and I guess the Feds are hoping one of the defendants currently under indictment will throw said player under the bus.

Vick screwed up his NFL career

More than anything, I think he screwed up his $100 million contract with Nike

checkmark  Probably very much akin to Kobe losing his endorsement with Sprite (and whoever else for that matter).

"bad news" is an understatement. If this guy has any personal first hand evidence to offer, Vick is very deep shit.

Fipping a potential defendant is always part of our game plan. When a defendant is facing a (for example, not necessarily the exact amount here) 10 year mandatory minimum sentence, and we offer him a five year sentence if he cooperates, he very often becomes reaaaaal friendly.

And Michael Vick's legal troubles continue....  rotfl

Prisoner sues Vick for $63 billion

Here's what I got the biggest laugh out of:

Quote:
Riches claims that Vick sold the pilfered pooches on eBay and used the proceeds to purchase missles from the Iranian government, that he has "plead (sic) allegiance to Al-quaeda" and has subjected Riches to "microwave testing."

It's supposedly a very big name player, so that would automatically eliminate the entire Hawks roster.....  duck

Where I heard this rumor at, the guy said it was a Top 5 player in the league.
