Ever Get So Pissed At The Media You Turn Red?

Fri Jul 20, 2007 11:03 pm

Recently, the local news took it upon themselves to say the emergency phones serviced by the police department I work for were not working and rarely- if ever worked. They did this as one of those big expose sort of reports where they are trying to save the world. Naturally, they interviewed 1 (one) student who conveniently did not wish to be identified or have her face shown. Anyway, this "student" claimed she had attempted to use one and had received no response. For those of you not familiar with these large things that appear on a lot of college campuses, in airport parking lots, around malls, etc. They are 9 or 10 feet tall, blue, lighted, and have a speaker with a call button on them. All it takes to operate one is smack the red button. You don't even have to talk. it is like a 911 call. hit the button and someone will come.

With my fixed days off I almost always work Sunday nights. The nights we do our weekly checks on the things. I am the only bike qualified person typically on duty Sunday nights so I usually handle the checks. I can honestly say in the last 6 months I don't think I have found more than 1 or 2 out of more than 60 of the things not working at any one time.

Needless to say I was fuming mad when I saw that report.

I was even more mad when I saw my work email inbox and had 5 emails from the higher ups who were out of the loop on the matter asking what the hell was going on.

I am fine with reporters trying to report a legitimate story to make the world a better place. This just borders on immoral. I find it pretty sad our news media has stooped to going out of their way to make people feel unsafe just so they can fill 3 minutes of airtime with an outright lie.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Yep. I just read about a "train that crashed into 3 cars". In reality, 3 cars were involved in minor fender bender which left one of the cars on the tracks. This single car was then struck by the train. Tragic, but I don't know how they can twist this into a train crashing into 3 cars.

Obviously the media is more concerned with wild exaggerations than in honestly reporting the news.

This whole rant is suspect and I have a feeling we aren't getting all the information. I doubt it was just a three-minute interview with one shadowed figure who only talked about one phone not working. And you are saying it's the media that don't tell the whole story.  sarcastic

But instead of 'turning red' and crying about it on a message board, perhaps you should contact the news director and offer to escort a news crew to various emergency phones to show that they do, in fact, work.

direct violation of department policy.

actually.. yeah it was. contact me privately and I will link the online video if you give a shit. If you are just stirring the pot don't worry about it. Our local news really is that bad.

And I timed it, it is only 3 minutes give or take.

Well, if five superiors are so concerned, it shouldn't be too difficult to get permission. In fact, I'm sure at least one of them will contact the station for you. It's not like news crews and police have never interacted before.

Is it against department policy to post links to news videos on message boards, too?

No.. But some of us don't like to publish where we work for the entire planet to see.

I take this to mean you are just stirring the pot.

We all know that the media NEVER exaggerates or over blows a story to get ratings. Also, If you ever worked in law enforcement you would know that they prohibit beat cops from talking to the media. Nothing makes media people more happy then a cop saying something stupid on camera. When you deal with the snakes you send the snake charmer.

I am not saying the Capt would do that but it has happened elsewhere

The media is biased when it comes to reporting car vs. train crashes. The headline or teaser simply reports something like, "Train Hits Pedestrian" or "A train slammed into a car..." or "Engineer didn't stop in time."

They rarely explain the "pedestrian" was a tagger, jogger, or homeless person trespassing on railroad property. Or that the car that was "slammed" into drove around crossing gates. Or explain that trains can't stopped on a dime; like it's the engineer's fault.

There was this one time I was watching a game, and I heard this commentator, Manuel Antonio Obando from Channel 6 in Costa Rica, mispronouncing names and making fun of other people's games intentionally. It really pisses me off because he has shown NO professionality whatsoever, and still doesn't. I was happy he got sacked, but was pissed off about him getting re-hired after going through rehab last year. One more reason for me to avoid watching Costa Rican national television.

So to all people who complain about sports commentators, don't complain, because Manuel Antonio Obando from Channel 6 is the worst of them all. Once you heard him commentating, then you'll start to appreciate the commentators you have to put up with.

All you have to do is turn CNN on and I get red with anger. Every time I go to columbus circle I make it a point ot pour a drink out or spit on their building.

I get pissed over false statements. Sometimes you spot stuff that doesn't sense and you know why.

No, they don't. I work for a newspaper, and I see how hard the folks on the Editorial side of the house work to get the story and make sure it's correct. Our people have broken many major stories and have helped make a difference.

Unfortunately the bad apples, and there are a lot these days, make it harder for the honest media to compete.

Mostly at television news. I've been thinking about starting a thread on the stupidity of the person or persons responsible for the video that we see.

1. They always put CG graphics across the bottom of the screen during such footage, but the camera operators continue to compose their shots with the subject near the bottom of the frame. Result; quite often you cannot see the actual subject of the tape.

2. They zoom in way too tight without ever showing an establishing shot, so all you know you are looking at is flashing lights or yellow tape or flames or a bunch of police/firemen standing around.

3. In an ongoing story, over several days they continue to use the footage taken on the first day. For example we have a big fire just west of Reno. It burned all along the southwest side of town where the most expensive homes are. They never once showed a long shot from across town establishing where the actual fire is, but used telephoto shots that foreshortened the distance between the flames and the rooftops in the foreground.

4. When they use maps or graphic charts these are useless. The map will rarely be oriented north-up, but rotated to fit the screen space available. Thank MTV for this one but it may not remain on-screen long enough to read a couple of street names or something so you can figure out what you are looking at. I recall when a 737 landed on top a Metroliner at LAX they showed a really simplified cartoon graphic of the airport and it had an asterisk "*" at runway 24L. The on-scene reporter was describing where the 737 had come to rest - about halfway down that runway and off the left side a hundred yards or so. The anchor was (stupidly) arguing with the on-scene reporter about the location of the crash because his artist in the studio in New Yokr had drawn the asterisk down by the runway numbers. Morons. Of course this was the same anchor who went on the air with an eyewitness report (false) that the 737 had landed with its wheels not extended. He is reading this, voiced over a live shot of the burning 737 with its wheels DOWN.

5. Stock footage should be updated every few years. We might notice that there are not that many Edsels and Desotos parked on our streets these days.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Does your department have a public information officer...someone who deals with the media on a regular basis? If so..
he or she is the person who should give the news director of the station a call. If not, the chief or a ranking officer could do so. And if you don't get satisfaction there..go to the General Manager. Everyone has a boss.
I find it hard to believe that the station aired the allegations of one person..without giving the department a chance to respond. If it did, you have a very legitimate gripe. I'm sure that you have to record your findings.." alarm six inoperative"..that sort of record should go a long way in proving your case.
We in the Tampa Bay area --media and police--have a very good working relationship. There are regular meetings, to clear up problems, and try to anticipate them. There's a private messaging system...Media Alert..through which PIO's can get info to stations instantly...hell, I get the alerts in my home e-mail, and other systems, through which stations which do not subscibe can get the info on a timely basis. But I've taken part in national conventions with PIO's..and heard some real horror stories. A working relationship--over time--cures a lot of problems.

After a 10 second search I found this article/video which I presume is what you're talking about:
http://www.woai.com/news/local/story...d53619-28e2-48da-a597-8148404acaf2

Seems to me like they have valid claims-- a girl that actually tried to use one and it didn't work, a campus 'officer' saying that many do not work, and many records from the school saying the phones don't work... Hardly "BS" from the News if you ask me

What bothers me about the media is that they go on about a bunch of celebrities getting in trouble and neglect their duty to report more important things, like what's going on in Iraq other than a few more of our soldiers died from a road-side bomb, the middle-east, and what's going on in other countries.

If I recall the media is suppost to report the NEWS

Records several years old. Current records will show some broken and fixed within a week- 2 weeks in extreme cases (one phone took a direct lightning hit and it knocked out several nearby). Do they break occasionally? Yeah- They sit outside. Do they get fixed quickly as in within a week or two? Yes. I don't know what would be considered satisfactory.

Probably the same unnamed and undescribed campus officer who tells them they can park wherever they want after 5pm.

Well like HellHung said, instead of voicing yourself here, bring this information to the 5 'higer ups' that sent you emails so they can talk to the media and have the story corrected.

No offense but I think they should be fixed sooner then that. If not, a large sign should be placed on them stating they are out of service. Just imagine some poor girl running to a phone with a creep on her tail only to get a phone that doesn't work.
