LOL, you saw that too, pretty hilarious. I really can't believe that anyone would think that the sun rotates around the Earth. I mean, he probably confused France with the Earth.

Maybe more than half of France still thinks the Earth is the center of the universe.

This is a brave thread to post from your side of the pond.

Yes, this lot seem pretty dim. I'm not going to sink to the posting the thousands of similar American clips from Youtube, because most of us have seem them, but while we're at it, some perspective from our friend Bill Maher:

Point is that in those clips, it's always the candidate awfully failing, while here, it was the candidate *plus* almost 60% of the audience Big grin

Using that to make a judgement about the French education system is at best shortsighted. I have at least 20 friends from French schools who applied to top US universities and walked through them like a breeze, and these included MIT, Stanford (my brother), G-Tech, Cal-Tech, UCLA and Harvard. Yes, you read it right, a breeze. French School + US University is a very comfortable and advantageous combination.

That being said, and with all due respect, it is safe to say that the US contains a disturbingly high level of ignorance in a surprisingly high number of people, more than any other nation I've visited or known people from.

Whose got the most or least thickos pissing contest aside, I'd never count anything like this from a TV studio, when most normal people would be under at least some stress, what with lights, pressure of time, the studio audience and the fact that millions are watching, I could never face that, not for a million £!
Not being a professional, polished politician, actor or TV presenter, cannot help much either.

Too right. But probably not for the reasons you think. If it stinks it is because it produces millions of over-educated unemployable jaded wasters.

If anything, the French school system is too elitist and tough.

Which, as the clip shows, can be massively counterproductive...  sarcastic

What rotates about what depends on your frame of reference. Given the vague question, both the sun and the moon are correct answers.

I heard a while back that the audience for 'Millionaire' in the U.K., when called upon, would give the wrong answer on purpose just to $%#@ with the contestant. This could also apply to the French. Just a thought.

Some might say it is unfair to paint every citizen with the same brush. However, check out: http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=kLXRVvA6T9k

This is what was the most shocking thing about this clip. I mean the guy seemed nervous, I mean who hasn't gone blank? But 56% of the audience chose the SUN!!  Wow!

Amazing...

and the answer is "The World"

From our reference!

Re. orbits, the Earth doesn't orbit the Sun, they both orbit the barycentre. It just so happens that the Sun-Earth barycentre is about 450km from the centre of the Sun, ie. in the Sun. The Sun does wobble though.

Edit: 450km comes from a back of the envelope calculations from an equation derived from some deep, distant undergrad course, so it might be bollocks!

I don't quite get the distinciton. Yes, orbit is more accurate because it directly implies rotation about another body, not a reference axis like rotation does. Is 'to orbit' technically a verb though? Either way, the Sun orbits the Earth from the point of view of the Earth.

Well if the center of mass is in the sun still, even if not at the center, isn't the earth still orbiting the sun rather than some point in space between the sun and earth?

Nope, because the sun wobbles - it's orbiting the barycentre too.
