How To Prevent Car Sun Damage?

Mon Jul 23, 2007 3:39 pm

Hello! I just got my first car a few days ago (Volvo S60), and I have to park it in our driveway, because our garage is taken up by my mom's car and a jetski. I was wondering if there is anything (besides a car cover) that I can use to prevent sun damage to the paint and plastic parts? My dad has to park his car in the driveway also, and it's about 2 years old and it already has sun damage, so I'm hoping to find some way to prevent it. If anyone knows of anything I can use, let me know!
Thanks!

Use a good wax/protectant on it and use products such as Armour All for the plastic parts and the tires.

Ditto. I own a 94' Volvo 940 and have kept it prestine doing that. It sits in parking lots and driveways all the time.

Yeh but then it will get damaged physically!  Wink

There are various waxes out there to protect it. Go down to your local auto shop and ask which they would recommend for your car.

Yeh see they only think they aren't damaging it because they are so drunk. You take a look around and thecars are only silver because they've been scratched so much.

I have found that Lexoyl interior protectant is much better than others. Does not have a weird odor, and it lasts longer. It is more $$$$

thanks for the replies! I'll go by the auto store this later and pick up some wax and plastic protectant. I thought I'd give that a shot before moving to Scotland.  Big grin

Buy a quality car! My wife has an 11 year old BMW that lives in the African sun and there are no signs of sun damage anywhere.

Paint is paint...eventually the sun WILL bleach it out if you don't protect it...

My 1995 Acura was solid black up until last summer...by the end of the summer, the hood was about half WHITE. Thank you South Carolina...

From http://www.meguiars.com :

Some waxes do contain UV-protection agents, but the amount of protection that a microscopically thin layer of wax can provide is limited

The primary goal of a wax is to protect the top layers of paint that contain UV-protection agents from the paint manufacture. If you wash and wax your car regularly, your paint will be protected and you should suffer no major UV damage over the normal course of the life of the car.

Don't be fooled by some companies that lead you to believe that it is the UV protection in a wax that protects your car's finish from fading and failure, this is dishonest and simply not true. Taking care of the paint you presently have will go further to protect your finish than relying on protection supplied by a liquid you pour out of a bottle, or a wax you scoop out of a can. UV protection in a car wax formula is only an extra-dose of preventative maintenance, not the end-all, cure-all that some companies would lead you to believe.

Wax it every month and wash it weekly. Also you might want to invest in a car cover if you really care about the sun damaging it.
