Who Will Win The World Series (MLB)? (Part 2)

Tue Jul 24, 2007 1:13 pm

3 months ago, a few of us chose some teams as to who would be baseball's national champion. Those picks?

Boston92: Boston Red Sox
PIA777: Chicago Cubs
Oli80: New York Mets
Pipo777: Arizona Diamondbacks
KaiGwyer: Minnesota Twins
Wrenchbender: Toronto Blue Jays
Thepilot: Detroit Tigers
FlyDeltaJets87: Cincinnati Reds
LHMARK: Los Angeles Angels
TLG: Milwaukee Brewers
Piercey: Houston Astros
ORFflyer: Atlanta Braves
Yellowstone: San Francisco Giants
ATCGOD: Seattle Mariners
YOWza: Wahington Nationals
Galapagapop: San Diego Padres

As only 16 teams were chosen (which is half of all teams), one would beg the question, "Will ANY of these teams win the world series?"

These are the current top 16 teams in the league:

Detroit
Boston
LA Angels
Cleveland
Seattle
NY Mets
LA Dodgers
Milwaukee
San Diego
NY Yankees
Chicago Cubs
Atlanta
Arizona
Minnesota
Philadelphia
Colorado

How did we do?
Well, 11 of the 16 teams chosen are in the 'actual' top 16. Who was not? Toronto (17), Cincinnati (29), Houston (27), San Fransisco (26), and Washington (25).

Those stats also means that 5 teams are in the 'actual' top 16 that are not on the list as one chosen by us. Cleveland is one of those teams ranked 4th in all of MLB. That could be bad news. Only time will tell though and we shall see.

At the beginning of the season, after the Zito acquisition, I honestly believed the Giants had a shot at at least the playoffs. Of course, I was dead wrong.

So now, I think, provided they get a decent pitcher at the deadline, Cleveland will take it all.

My WS Pick Mets vs. Indians, Indians in 6.

I'm sticking with my Braves, just because I'm a Braves fan.

BUT - Somebody's got to start beating the Mets. The Dodgers look real good out west, and so far, the Central seems to be coming down to the Brew Crew and the Cubbies. If the Cubs get to the postseason, I'll wish them all the best unless they are playing the Braves.  Smile

In the AL, the Sox currently have a seven game advantage, but we all know how the late season can be for them. I still think they will win the East. In the Central, the Tigers and Indians are at the top with the Tigers holding on to a two game lead right now. It's really a toss-up there, and I'll pick the Indians to win it. Out west I think the Angels will hold on to win the division.

WS - Braves vs. Sox
Braves in seven.

Yea, but of all teams, you were swept AT HOME by the Cincinnati Reds. So October looks doubtful for you.  wink

Besides, even if the Braves do make the playoffs, we all know they'll choke big time, just as they did in every postseason except two in the 1990's (1994 because of the Strike, and 1995 when they beat the Indians).

Now if only the Yankees could have played all season like they've played since the beginning of June.

I wouldn't mind if they started playing again like they did before June...  Silly

I'd love to see the Mariners reaching the playoffs, but wouldn't put money on it yet. Even though the Angels show some weakness as well right now.

The Tigers are the best team in baseball, and every fan who pays attention to the game knows it. They are the highest rated teams currently in the ESPN and SI polls. And are winning without their critical bullpen set up men, Rodney and Zumaya.

If those guys come back and are healthy (indications are they are on track and feel great), the Tigers will be in great shape for a very deep October run. Their line-up is relentless, and overall the pitching is stable and well-rested; none of the pitchers have logged too many innings.

Finally, after the debacle in last year's WS, I promise you no team is more hungry than Leyland's squad, and he will keep them that way.

Go get'em Tigers!!!!

My prediction as of 7/24:

AL East: Yankees (3rd seed)
AL Central: Tigers (2nd seed)
AL West: Angels (1st seed)
Wild Card: Cleveland (4th seed)

ALDS: Angels over Cleveland, Tigers over Yankees

ALCS: Angels over Tigers

NL East: Mets (2nd seed)
NL Central: Cubs (3rd seed)
NL West: Dodgers (1st seed)
Wild Card: Brewers (4th seed)

NLDS: Brewers over Dodgers, Mets over Cubs

NLCS: Mets over Brewers

World Series: Angels over Mets

What? Even if you are not drinking the Red Sox Cool aid, there is no way that Boston (best team in baseball) does not make it to October.

With the return of Jon Lester, as well as Curt Schilling, and a bullpen that keeps getting better, there is no way that Boston lets New York have this years pennant. New York will be lucky if they even have a chance at the Wild Card.

I have the Mets all the way personally. If Pedro comes out of the box on fire we will be ok. David Wright needs to up it a notch at the plate though and Delgado needs to stop swinging for the long ball and focus on the small ball because it is not so bad to lay a bunt down here and there.

Boston92, above you concede that the Red Sox "still will make it to October."

Agreed, but last year's Tigers team is much improved this year. I just cannot see any team in the AL beating them 4 out of 7, with the possible exception of the Angels, but they need another big bat in the lineup.

It is our turn again this year, and probably will be for the next few years. Gosh, it's great to be back among the elite!

I think the next big bat for the Angels may well be A Rod though some rumors point he intends to stay now as he is looking a massive house in Conn. easy driving distance from the stadium.

Right now, there are 3 (maybe 4) VERY good A.L teams (Detroit being one). You guys are acting like the Tigers will easily make it to the World Series. That is not the case. They might not even make it to the ALCS. Cleveland, Boston, and Los Angeles are just as good or better than Detroit and if the Tigers have to face any one of those in the playoffs, I would not be surprised if the blow it. Nonetheless, this years world series will be NYM vs Los Angeles or Boston. Detroit will blow it early in the playoffs. There October run will not be very long (but that is just my projection).

I don't think post-season success will be a given for the Tigers. As you know, it's like a tournament now, anyhting could happen.

Last year, the Tigers got swept at home by K.C., losing the division title. Everyone on earth was convinced they would quickly fold to the Yanks. They beat them in 4, sweep past the As, and collapsed in the WS. Again, anything could happen.

I simply do not think the Tigers will lose early in the playoffs. For that matter, I think that between the teams you cite, the Angels are more vulnerable for an early exit. Tigers will finish with the No. 1 seed, with the Sox, Tribe, and Angels close behind. Still see my guys winning the pennant, probably against your Sox.

As for the NL, we will see. It would be great for the Brew Crew to make it.

My point was that all the A.L teams will struggle early in the playoffs because there is a number of great teams. I can easily see the Sox, Tigers, Tribe, and LAA in the ALCS, but there can only be two. Two of those teams will not be there.

Thren you have to also give credit to the teams like Seattle who might make the playoffs, and Seattle is capable of beating anyone. It should be an interesting month nonetheless.

Dodgers in seven Vs. Mets in NLCS. Angels in 6 vs.Yankees in ALCS,although Yanks got some work to do.And the Angels need to tweak their lineup to stay competitive in the stretch.

They just beat Cleveland 3 out of 4 (with the one loss being 1-0) and have a 28 more games (more than half) with either TB or Baltimore. When over half of your remaining schedule has two of the worst teams in baseball, and you are 7.5 up in your division, 12.5 up on the wild card leader (Cleveland who Boston beat 3 of 4), I do not see Boston slipping anywhere near out of the playoffs.

A little off topic.

I have tickets to tomorrow night's Orioles-Yankees game at Camden Yards. I'll take the camera and file a proper trip report upon return.  Wink

HaHa..No kidding.

Any Angel fan would probably give you the same response knowing in the playoffs,
the Angels have mishandled the Yankees instead of the Red Sox.Call it respect.

Go Balti birds!!!! I was quite sad in 96 when that little twirp grabbed the ball in the playoffs. I always beleived that kids grab was the beginning of the downfall for Baltimore.
