Anybody Watch The YouTube Debates Yesterday?

Wed Jul 25, 2007 3:11 am

Last night, the Democrats went on with the first of two Presidential debates featuring questions posed by the citizens of YouTube. No doubt CNN had to sift through their fair share of crap, but I thought the questions were largely well-chosen and the whole thing went rather well.

Candidates Dodd and Kucinich surprised me the most - both of them really came out of the woodwork and brought up some good points. Anecdotally, it'll be interesting to compare Kucinich's poll numbers and mainstream appeal this time around compared with 2004.

Gravel, as usual, played the role of the grumpy old man IMO, but I did like his suggestion about tax structure reform - that sounded to me like a bright idea to change America from a nation of spenders back into the nation of savers that we were 100 years ago.

So, what were your thoughts? Which candidate(s) surprised you?

The two best bits were the guys from TN who asked what the candidates thought of Gore, and when Kucinich said, "Notice CNN didn't put anyone to the left of me?"

Otherwise, it was about the same as the other debates. Some good discussion about how No Child Left Behind is a failure, and an honest answer from Biden that he only voted for it because of his trust in Ted Kennedy. Wish there was more of that kind of candor in the campaigns (not to mention the White House).

...and then there was Joe Biden-- WTF was he on??

Not that he had a snowball's chance to begin with, but I'd say he torpedoed whatever ambition he held by this point.

I like the YouTube debate was an improvement over the traditional debate.

Mike Gravel kissed his ass goodbye when he said, "There's no difference" between the draft and registering for Selective Service. Ummm... There's a BIG difference.

Overall, Clinton won. I'm so damned happy!  cloudnine

That was gold.  laughing

I thought he did rather well in the last debates, but this time it was like he was just trying to shoot himself in the foot - almost as nutty-sounding as Gravel.

BTW, anyone notice Howard Dean's "80's stock broker" glasses? You'd think at that price they'd hand him a mirror.

That whole question didn't get the play it should have. If women should be required to register for Selective Service as well as men.

Does Gravel expect our former enemies to remain our enemies forever? Why the fuck can't Obama ever answer a simple question without going off on a tangent about something completely different?

I do not know where you got that from but she actually did pretty bad in the debate. The clear winner of the debate was Obama especially when he talked of using diplomacy as his ultimate tool for foreign policy, Hilary on the other hand was flip flopping on issues as usual. Edwards in my opinion came a close second with the good points being brought to the podium.

My kick ass quote from the debate would be this on the subject of Clinton asking the pentagon about withdrawing troops:

“The time to ask about withdrawal plans was before we went in”

Clinton had no response against it.

Not sure if I'm sold on it or not, but it is an interesting suggestion.

Candidates Dodd

 checkmark  Came across very well.

and Kucinich

Well, he's far out there anyway (and yes, that joke at the end was great), so he'll never be a serious candidate.
