Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip Cancellation.

Thu Jul 26, 2007 12:25 pm

Why was the hit tv show on NBC Studio 60 cancelled for? They earned 5 Emmy nominations in their first year, which is good! Did creater Sorkin and NBC shed some bad blood or something? What gives? That was a great show.

First off I wouldn't call it a hit. Like many shows recently, it received great reviews and was of a very high quality. Unfortuantely, it never found an audience and could not be sustained if no one watched it. Maybe a cable channel will revive it (Bravo, A&E, etc.)

It was too high brow for TV, and frankly as much as I liked it, after it came back from its hiatus it got too damn preachy. Same thing happened on Fox when Arrested Development got canceled after 3 shortish seasons, yet That 70s Show got renewed for an 8th season w/o Ashton or Topher playing their characters.

i agree - great show. Not sure why it did not really catch on. I am sure they had to have some really high ratings to support the salaries of such a cast, and they just were not there.

I agree - there seems to be a lot of that on NBC's shows lately (which I hate seeing since I work for GE).

At least it got the opportunity to really rap up all the story lines before it went off. That is pretty rare in the case of a cancellation.

Ratings...pure and simple.

The show never found an audience because it was too "smart" for the dumbed down masses that watch TV these days. Personally I thought the show thought too highly of itself and wasn't on my queue of stuff to watch but I could see the smart writing involved. I'm sure it will get replaced by some dumbass reality show.

I disagree. Expain the 5 Emmy nominations. If there wasn't an audience then there would be no nominations.

Maybe if they bring back Studio 60, they can tone it down a bit. Isn't it supposed to be based off a tv show like SNL behind the scenes?

Yep. And those scenes seemed to repeat themselves again and again. However, some subplots seemed to drag on forever, like Matt's flashbacks. I got really tired of Danny and Jordan's relationship going nowhere for so long. The show was nearly self-limiting.

The West Wing had a limitless supply of "action" possibilities, just like the real White House. And that, combined with outstanding acting and actors, made it shine.

From a newspaper here in the UK today reviewing tonight's first episode:

THE West Wing meets The Larry Sanders Show and starring former Friend Matthew Perry. How could it possibly fail?
Incredibly, in the States, it did, as this intelligent drama started strong but lost viewers by the end of the first - and last - series. Which, in a way, just backs up this show's argument about TV having sunk to the level of a moronic cesspool.

I enjoyed the show but it was tough to watch when it started at 2200 local, and I had to be up for work at 0600L.

Not true....the quality of a show (or perceived quality) doesn't have anything to do with ratings in the real and final sense. There have been plenty of critical darlings that have failed to attract an audience and been cancelled.

Ratings are real numbers generated by television watchers.......critical acclaim is often accorded to shows that don't get ratings.

Another of Sorkins shows had the same problem (Sportsnight).

The greatest sci-fi television show ever was cancelled after three seasons. Star Trek
The greatest fantasy television show ever was cancelled after one. The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr

The truly insipid reality show about two idiotic it girls got several renewals.

Explain that with the quality argument.

Emmy nominations aren't predicated on popular ratings support for the show.

What didn't help it was the hiatus. I didn't realize it was back on until the last two weeks of this season. That sucks though, I really liked the show.

Is it true that the creater, Sorkin, had a fued with NBC before the show got cancelled, which ended in the result we are discussing now? I swore I heard that from somewhere. Can anyone verify this? Could this have very well killed the show?

Like I said critics loved the show and obviously some people were watching it, but no matter what time slot they put it in it did poorly and never was able to hold its own against its competition. The ratings were bad....which is not entirely the show's fault. NBC moved it around alot (time slots/days) and that makes it hard for shows to build their audiences.

Its unfortuante because it was supposedly a very good show but the ratings speak for themselves.....hardly anyone was watching. I think it would have done better as an original series on Bravo or A&E or even TNT or USA.

I think part of the reason the show failed is that no one really cares about the drama behind making a TV show. The White House or an Emergency Room are more intriguing to people and are easier to grasp. It kind of seems like a show about a TV show would only be appreciated by people in the biz ...

Shame it has been cancelled. We get it here, but it is on at 22:30, really late if I have an early start. Good acting though and good to watch. Perhaps a bit too cerebral for the "instant gratification" viewer of today.

The show may have also been canceled for being incredibly condescending and a blatant copy of West Wing set in Hollywood in an attempt to create some credibility for Hollywood as a force for change in America.

..which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it ABSOLUTELY doesn't work when it's supposed to be about a sketch comedy show.

Aaron Sorkin wants to write gritty stories that teach lessons? I'm fine with that, but he'd almost have had more success having it set at a burger joint instead of at the writing table of a SNL-like show.

I caught it the other night half way through the 2nd episode and it seemed ok, but here in the UK they've hidden in away on More4 which is a lesser known relative of the mainstream Channel 4, so they can't have been expecting the best from it.
