Why Some US Comedy/sitcom Gets Only 1 Season...(?)

Sun Jul 29, 2007 3:07 am

One of our TV channels had the last episode of "The Comeback" last week.
It was only one season so nothing more to see. But i loved it! It was really fun.

If you compare that with "Notes from the Underbelly", who has been shown for
2 seasons (!), is that so bad that i want to hide behind the sofa... How can TV
networks in the USA make such bad judgement?

If it gets low ratings, whats a network supposed to do? Advertisers will dump the slots so it wont command as much revenue as other shows, so its essentially taking up space that could be used for better revenue producers.

It comes down to ratings. During each new season, networks put out a number of new shows knowing that not all of them will be successful. They do it in the hope that one or two will end up big. This leads to stupid shows being introduced like "Cavemen." In the end, based on the advertisements, it's not hard to predict which ones will probably get cancelled.

The ratings go in big cycles, too.

When a network gets one new show that is a hit, the other shows around are watched more and can become hits in and of themselves. That's why you will see one network have a bunch of 'good' shows all at one time.

It's up to the other channels to keep reinventing and see what sticks, then the momentum can shift their way.
I'll rassle ya for a bowl of bacon!
